In this video we're checking out Emerson, Lake and Palmer. We've heard so much about this band, but we've never heard any of their work, so it's time to get to that. This is both part 1 and 2 of this piece. Enjoy!

To die for, this concert memory. I was living in Hawaii at the time and Carl Palmer's stainless steel drum kit was collapsing stages ( ! ) so the promoters in Hawaii said forget it. So I did what any serious 18 year old fan of music would do: I flew 6000 miles each way to the East Coast so I could catch this incredible album performed live. Well worth it.

At the time they were probably the best musicians on the planet. I have the honour of seeing them several times over the years. A sad loss to the world of music when both Keith Emerson and Greg Lake passed. Carl Palmer is however still touring with his own band.

Part 2 was the one played on the radio the most often. Greg Lake was the man! He could really string words together!

My favorite song, from my favorite group. I saw them perform this masterpiece TWICE IN 2 NIGHTS, in 1974. One of the concerts became their masterpiece multi-albums at Anaheim. Wow.

This whole lp is worth a listen. My favourite track though is "Fanfare For The Common Man" from the "Works Vol I" LP from a few years later. The cover for this lp (Brain Salad Surgery) was created by R. H. Geiger (made mode famous by his design/set work on "Alien" the movie.

Be sure to check out the rest of Karn Evil 9. (2nd and 3rd impression.) It now continues with a piano solo. The three impressions urgently belong together for the story that is being told. What you've heard so far was the 1st impression, parts 1 and 2 (you had to turn the record over, that's why parts 1 and 2). Enjoy the rest of the trip.

A good place to start your ELP diver. I personally would recommend Trilogy, which I believe is full realization of their concept of fusing classical, rock, jazz into their music. Also, Pirates from the Works album is a great example of their talents. Good listening. Yes, Lake was bass and guitar (and vocals). It was almost seamless when Emerson picks up the baseline on keyboards.

Got to agree - I’ve had the original version embedded since the 70’s - too much bass and drums in the foreground; the Hammond sounds lost! It’s definitely different

Saw them live at the Montreal Forum in 1974. Also at the Olympic Stadium a few years later. Then in 1987 at Canada's Wonderland. Carl Palmer still tours with his Legacy band and I saw them at the Budweiser Center in 2018. Their music is exceptional. BSS is not my favourite of theirs. Try Trilogy or their debut album. Less manic. Less speed, more emotion. Good review. Glad to see prog make a comeback.

Great reaction to ELP, and you're the only person who's ever caught the fact that Greg Lake switches from bass to guitar and Keith takes over on bass keyboard at that one point in the song!!! I saw ELP on this Brain Salad Surgery tour in 1974. Also, on their reunion tour I just happened to be at the right place at the right time, and after the show got to hang with Keith Emerson and Carl Palmer on the tour bus for awhile. Again, great reaction and appreciation for this!!!

@@filbertoaguirre7858I have always been a huge ELP and Yes fan, especially of Keith and Rick Wakeman (but all the musicians are masters). I tended to listen to Keith's playing more as ELP was more keyboard-centric. I told Keith that to which he replied "I should certainly hope so"!! (with a smile on his face).

I was listening to ELP, because I liked King Krimson. They were the mixture of fusion and romantic pops, I suppose. I replaced them for more literary prog band, Genesis.
@edljnehan2811
@edljnehan2811 11 ай бұрын
You're not the brightest WIC in the forest are you😅 a mixture of fusion and romantic pop? Who is that King Crimson or e l p? Are you insane or just borderline retarded? Either way pop shouldn't even come into the discussion😢 first off on a musicianship scale ELP are the Undisputed Kings😊 King Crimson or avant-garde Progressive Genesis like the other two were a great progressive rock band until pop-oriented Tutti Frutti Phil Collins took over. No contest Emerson Lake and Palmer where the greatest. The nice with Keith Emerson were the first progressive rock band. Followed by King Crimson starring Greg Lake were the second which if you include Atomic rooster with Carl Palmer should make them not only the first supergroup b u t the gods of progressive rock😮 then you throw in the dynamic musicianship of three technical virtuosos and it's easy to realize why those guys blow their contemporaries away. Especially Genesis who were absolutely great in the early 1970s allowed Phil Collins to take them on a journey that George Michael and his black twin Michael Jackson would have traveled😢😮😅😅😅

Interesting remix. The translation from 5.1 to stereo is a bit regrettable, in that it's making some things louder than they were originally, and other things are vanishing somewhat so it's distorting your experience when compared to the stereo mix. Also, if you're wondering about any weird panning, I believe this was originally mixed for quad, which was a hot new thing in 1973. That's one reason 8-track tapes became trendy back then -- they could reproduce a quad mix. ELP really embraced the format, even mixing their live shows for quad, so the music would sometimes be circling around the hall (which you can hear on the "Welcome Back My Friends to the Show that Never Ends" live album.) The section in KE9 that starts with "Welcome back my friends to the show that never ends." is the start of side 2 of the vinyl album. The tambourine-synth passage that precedes the vocal fades out to end side 1 and fades in to start side 2. As I recall the first CD release of this album actually kept the fade out and fade in!

Interesting. How would one make that work on home audio back in 1973?
@yes_head
@yes_head Жыл бұрын
@@hanierfamily You would need to have a quad-compatible stereo system and speakers, much the same as today with surround. Quad is basically the same idea as 5.1, just without the center and subwoofer.
