Although Keith and Greg are no longer here, Carl is still hitting the skins at the age of 74, the most recent concert I've found on KZbin was from last month.

Ladies, you might also want to listen to Rachel Flowers who is a blind keyboard player that does all of Keith Emerson's parts of ELP. You close your eyes and I swear you are listening to Keith. She is just wonderful! She is 30 years old and began play ELP at 14 I think.

Emerson was a classically trained piano player in childhood. At age 14 he got into Jazz organ. He wrote the music for this song and wrote music for Movies and video games. At some point I will send you ... The Three Fates. ...It has the most beautiful classical piano that I have ever heard. Studio version only.

ELP was one of the few Rock bands that took themselves and what they did VERY seriously. Saw them once, in a Symphony Hall, and though they blew out the power three times during the show, they waited patiently while repairs were carried out, then restarted from exactly where they were interrupted. Very professional and unflappable. And really, truly excellent. Thank you ladies, great job.

When this came out (on Brain Salad Surgery) and I was a teenager I absolutely loved this, loved the whole album. Today I'm not as fond as I use to be but it scores high on nostalgia points. Keith Emerson (and you almost have to mention Rick Wakeman from Yes in the same breath) was a master of the synthesizer, and the synthesizer then wasn't just a little keyboard like today. It was a keyboard - or several - with towers and banks of switches, knobs and patch cords that had to be adjusted to create the sound he's going for. Hear how often that sound changes. It was as athletic as it was musical. All three of them, Greg Lake, Carl Palmer, were first rate musicians. They are playing at a time when rock 'n' roll had become rock and was now trying to be taken much more seriously, as seriously as classical music, or at least as seriously as jazz. There would be a reaction to that of course. The pendulum swings the other way, and it would all be washed away by the British New Wave, punk, and the resurgence of garage bands. Every magical musical moment fades, including the one we're in today. In a decade or more it's just a memory of another time, like an early Katy Perry song. But it was good to be there at the time.

Very much a song of the late 60s and early 70s with the electronic keyboards just entering mainstream music and bring new sounds to listeners and new styles of music starting as a result

I heard the 3 minute radio version 40 years ago, but nobody knew who it was! It wasn't until about 10 years ago I started investigating, then I found out it is Emerson , Lake and Palmer ! It almost irritated me because I missed out on 30 years of some really cool tunes . But today I have about 10 of their albums ! I'm trying to make up for it !

Just remember as you listen to all of the sounds here, there are only 3 members in the band. Greg Lake on guitars, Keith Emerson on keyboards (and often on lead singing with Greg) and Carl Palmer handling all of the percussion so you have a very talented group keep this all together.

Actually Lucky Man was from their first album, and as a side note, Greg Lake wrote that when he was twelve years old. And only added to the album because they needed one more song.

@@debbiegoss4475 ...a very good song, I like it so much I play it on guitar. I was supposed to go to California Jam I, but my dad wouldn't let me go, instead I worked! 🤬 Afterwords they showed it on TV and it was phenomenal! Each group set up on railroad flatbeds, and when the set was over, the next group would just roll in! The best act was the floating keyboard flipping through the air! It was mind boggling watching it on TV! I was FUCKING PISSED!

@@jamesmcclain5005 damn, you had every right to be pissed, we had to watch it on TV also..... But we sure made a helluva' party out of it!!!! And " Phenomenal" is the perfect description. I was able to see them on this tour on July 26 74' , at what was then Rich Stadium in Buffalo. Unfortunately, they didn't do the flying piano, but Karn Evil 9 , in Quad , in a stadium .... That was 50 yrs ago and I still get chills thinking about it.

On this one-I I love it-however -on the live version there is more of everything-Palmer does the best drum solo I ever heard.. I saw -Emerson's piano went up in the air and spun around. They had Quadriphonic sound-I was blown away-OK -Thanks for the reaction Ladies. Oh -I saw them at the Spectrum in Philly. Keith Emerson committed suicide -he had a medical condition- he was depressed when he found out that he would never play again.

Enjoyed the reaction! State of the art studio production for the time. This trailblazing band took it to the next level live. From uDiscoverMusic: The underlying theme is a world where mass entertainment distracts people from the disappearance of nature and human rights. Not at all prophetic, was it?

The Brain Salad Surgery album was a huge hit from start to finish and it actually started with a Church Hymn. .. Jerusalem... The patriotic English Church Hymn that was sung at Princess Di's Wedding and funeral. It was banned by the BBC because they thought it was sacrilegious to make a hit out of a church hymn. Maybe it has something to do with the cover art of a Skull and underneath was a woman. The model was the artist's wife/girlfriend? It is the same artist that design the creature for the ...Alien ...movies with Sigourney Weaver.

This one is top-notch progressive rock, Keith Emerson was an amazing composer and one of the greatest rock keyboardists. At one point you should tackle "Karn Evil 9 Second Impression" or their version of "Toccata" by the Argentine composer Ginastera. Also, check out the virtual 'International Collaboration' cover version of what you are listening to in this video by Rachel Flowers (one incredible musician, she adores ELP's music) and friends...amazing note-for-note fidelity to ELP's originals!

Sadly, Carl is the only member of the band still with us but he could still blow most drummers off the stage. He has lost none of the power and energy of the ELP days. When I was at school in the 70s we had a visit from a famous teacher at the Royal College of Music in London and he was tutoring Carl Palmer, who, despite being a multi millionaire rock star was still developing his phenomenal skills and improving all the time. That's classy.
