I always found it strange why ELP headlined the California Jam instead of Deep Purple .. and then I watched ELPs performance and yup ..on the day they blew Purple away .

Thanks Barry, I have mine on pre-order, its the same classic edition rather than the much more expensive signed by Carl Palmer and Emerson and Lake family members edition at £300 or the eye wateringly expensive individual editions at £500 each that come with posters and cds with interviews on and various other bits. I'm a fan but not that big a fan, and I even wavered at £40, however now I've seen what I'm getting I'm glad I ordered it. I was hoping it may have landed sometime near my bithday a couple of weeks ago, but never mind itll be much enjoyed when it finally arrives. I do believe that the High Voltage gig in Victoria Park was the very last time E L and P performed live on stage together - unfortunately (or maybe fortunately?) I wasnt able to go to it so I never got to see one of my favourite prog bands live, and the band whose Pictures at an Exhibition was not only the first prog album I ever had but the first , what you could call 'proper' rock band album I ever had - I did have various KTel compilations and those old Top of the Pops compilations - that possibly had the likes of David Byron and Elton John on them, though I wouldn't have had a clue who they were at the time - although perhaps I should maybe also count the two Osmonds albums I had - yes I admit I had 2 Osmonds albums, the best 2 mind, Crazy Horses and The Plan and those possibly helped sow the seed for my liking of heavy rock, metal and prog. And yes I do still occasionally dig them out and give them a listen every now and again :)

Zeppelin loved the Osmonds, they were an excellent rock band but the record company wanted them to be a pin-up pop band.

According to wiki, Purple had the choice of headlining but chose not to. Instead, they chose second from the top, then kept the audience waiting for an hour so they could do their show at dusk. I remember reading at the time that ELP were annoyed that Purple pushed ELP’s start time back so far.

Oh great. I pre ordered mine when first advertised, so it should be here soon. Yes I ordered the basic one as well. The two above were just to much money even though ELP were my favourite band. Strange to think John Peel hated ELP but loved the Nice, but then again Peel was a bit strange himself.

Just received mine and it is a fantasitic book well worth the money, even my wife liked the book and she only hears noise when it comes to ELP, she looked at the roll of names out of interest because she could not believe that many ELP fans existed! she spotted my name on the roll at the back and said, "is that you"? pretty obvious it was me with a fairly uncommon surname. Anyway good luck to all who purchased the book, now time for a burst of "The Return of the Manticore". Be well 👍

I quickly scurried to do some research on who this mystery Pink Floyd Guitarist David O’List is….. I thought Syd Barrett and David Gilmore were the only two guitarists for Pink Floyd before Roger left? Where does O’List fit in the list? (See what I just did then?)

If I'm not mistaken O'List stood in for Barrett at one of the gigs.

It must be great to be on the list of people who get the book long before the people who PAYED for it !!! Ordered mine back in June and the latest news I got from the publisher was they would be "shipping my copy sometime in EARLY NOVEMBER" ! It's now November 20th and no book yet ! Starting to think the publisher is not being totally honest with their customers !!! SHIP THE DAMN BOOK ALREADY !!!!

@@classicalbum My point was that individuals like you, a "reviewer" get the book before people who payed for it months ago are still waiting. Not upset with you but I am starting to get that way with the publisher of the book. They have had my money since June and I'd like to have my book yesterday.

John Peel called ELP a waste of talent and electricity. Disagreed with him then and still do now, they were a great band and opened the door for a lot of other prog acts to make their mark.
@jimmycampbell783 жыл бұрын
John Peel hated Emerson, Lake and Palmer with a passion. It all seems rather odd. There is that famous quote attributed to him which goes something along the lines of ELP being ‘a complete waste of time, talent and electricity.” 🤣

And in a BBC documentary, Palmer suggested that after the band's success, Peel must have been eating his words, at which point it cut to a shot of Peel eating the letters E, L and P from a tin of Alphabetti Spaghetti.

I was put off the Tull book by the fact that MB was not involved in it and that, rather predictably, the mid 90s to 2011 is skipped over in a couple of pages, with I think only one mention of Andrew Giddings and, astoundingly no mention at all of Jon Noyce.
