Formed in 1970, Emerson, Lake & Palmer helped define and set new standards throughout one of the most ambitious and experimental periods in 20th-Century popular music. Drawn from The Nice, King Crimson, and Atomic Rooster respectively, they were hailed as progressive rock’s first supergroup. Combining driving dynamics, intricate arrangements, and virtuosic skill, between 1970 and 1978, ELP released seven studio recordings and three live albums. Such was their popularity on both sides of the Atlantic that their records repeatedly achieved Platinum status sales.
Titles such as Tarkus, Trilogy, and Brain Salad Surgery created distinctive worlds that incorporated soaring themes, other-worldly timbres, yearning ballads, humorous pastiche and dramatic long-form conceptual works. While they adapted pieces by classical composers as stylistically varied as Bartok, Mussorgsky, Copland, Ginastera and Rodrigo, ELP sounded like nobody else but themselves.
The trio performed live one final time at London’s High Voltage Festival in July 2010 just weeks short of their debut gig 40th anniversary.
Although Keith Emerson and Greg Lake both sadly passed away in 2016, interest in ELP continues to grow, and Carl Palmer’s own band regularly performs a setlist dedicated to the unique music he helped create. ELP's music continues to find new audiences more than 50 years from their beginning, a striking testament to the group's irrepressible blend of energy, eclecticism, and visceral excitement.

I bought this album on vinyl in the late 1970’s. 44 years later my son keeps and listens to this exact same copy. It’s become a family heirloom!

Ha ! I have a 40 year old cassette tape ( which everyone informed me would only last about 10 yrs ) and it still plays perfectly. Also it has withstood extremes of cold and hot weather because for years it was kept in the car.

You are a good father for teaching your son the value in making an effort to listen at length and with an open mind... also your son has good taste... that phrase as 4:54 obsessed me for ages I learned today Keith Emerson asked Ginestera if it was ok for him to cover his work (piano concerto 1) and Emerson took the first cut to Ginastera in Switzerland where the Argentinian was living at the time and although they didn't speak the same language Ginestera through his wife Keith asked what he thought and Ginastera said "Diabolical!!!" Then added "This!... is how my music should be played!"

Great!! I still remember me, playing aloud this one while at college and my mother shouting : "Turn it down! Don't you know any nice songs?" (Zappa stile). I bought the L.P. on vacations at Argentina (1974).

I am always fascinated by the disturbing atmosphere that runs through this masterpiece by Ginastera, brilliantly interpreted by ELP. I must have heard it like 500 times already and I still can't get enough of it. And the cover by HR Giger is another gem that is impossible to ignore.

When introducing somebody to ELP, I always suggest easing people into it, first have them listen to "Lucky Man," followed by "From the Beginning," and then add Toccata is the group demonstrating that they can handle a really hard Classical piece.

Arguably the most innovative adaptation in the rock and roll era. Groundbreaking. What is this? It's not jazz. It's not classical. It's a little bit rock skirting those King Crimson edges but at the same time it's not. The aggression is what gets me. The intent. No fooling around here.

So what? It doesn't mean anything. It doesn't express anything important. It's abstraction for the sake of abstraction, and noodling around for what? Showing off? To prove you can waste that amount of studio time? It speaks of a particular kind of privilege to me, of boomer complacency and indifference to the shape of the world and other people's lives. Punk was necessary, and still is. This isn't.
@bookbard2382

It expresses the ultimate talent of human beings to strive for innovation and things outside our comfort zone of “normalcy” and to expand our very understanding of music itself. It exemplifies what humans can accomplish outside the limited bounds of the status-quo…namely a unique masterpiece in pure sound without the need or limitation of words. It’s the exact opposite of Boomer complacency, its Boomer brilliance.

What was the point of your comment? All you did was draw up a straw man to confirm your own prejudice. So what? It doesnt mean anything. It doesnt express anything important. It's complaining for the sake of complaining, and whining for what? Making other people share your own misery? To prove that you can waste that amount of screen time? It speaks of particular kind of privilege to me, of snobby entitlement and not only ignorance but also intolerance towards other peoples lives and the multitude of different avenues for creative self-expression. Just because you cant perceive any meaning or substance does not mean there isnt any. You just lack the ability to perceive it. Which is okey. There's just no need for your arrogant and dismissive attitude.
