I've emailed you guys personally, but wanted to publicly say how much I appreciate the frequent updates on your blog and the great videos. The degree to which you are reporting the progress (and or setbacks) is uncommon and praiseworthy. My flying buddy and I are watching your project with great interest as we have been talking for some time now about building and flying "goat" type gliders but wanted self-launch capabilities. We look forward to your experiments with that phase of testing. Thanks and good luck on a well designed and carefully implemented aircraft.

Interesting experimental,however for me the music spoils the video.I wanted to hear the electric motor and wind noise etc.

My 2 cent's worth: The music issue has been adequately addressed here, so I won't beat that dead horse further - other than to respectfully ask, why is it seemingly deemed downright mandatory for generic canned music beds to be added to 99% of otherwise good KZbin videos in the first place? Most add little & detract much. On the positive side, as an RC pilot who has seen the electric propulsion revolution explode in a relatively few years, I commend this application & wish you continued success in the development of this fascinating project.

@RainbowAviation7 жыл бұрын
Stable, absolutely. Fire, ahhhh, yeah, terrifying. In my 8000+ hours of flying in different aircraft I've had 3 fires in-flight. And you're right it's terrifying . We put a lot of thought into the whole possibility of a fire from either the motor, controller, or batteries. Keep in mind that the predator 37 installation was simply a test for testing the viability of the model aircraft motor and the amount of power necessary to sustain flight. There was never any intention for this to be a single engine aircraft with the small of the motor. If the tests have been better than what we expected we would have configured the aircraft in a twin engine configuration using this motor combination.

Enjoy the videos but turn off the music when talking (maybe just get rid of the music), install a forward looking camera (maybe on the center blue spar) and remember that we (or at lest I) watch these types of videos to get a feel of what it is like to do what you are doing and not to be entertained like I am watching a music video. A camera on the center blue spar that looks forward and down a bit would gives us a view of what you see as well as a view of the instrument panel, stick and pedals. You can edit between the wing mounted camera showing you and the spar mounted camera showing the flight controls and your view. Also, are you planing on adding a windscreen to improve aerodynamics?

Very cool..Problem with gliders is they come down, so if you can keep it up it will be worth it as a good form of thermal finding fun. Make sure those heat sinks do not overheat and catch fire. Its the smaller cheaper wire and lack of copper in chinese stuff, as they put most of their copper into their military equipment, more important to them. Damn heat will always be a problem, more heat means coolers, adds weight, need more thrust for the weight, its a vicious cycle. You are living the dream and leaving your mark on society. Hope to see you at Sun N Fun.
@doffincodger6 жыл бұрын
Looks an excellent power plant! However a slicker airplane, flying faster would resolve your cooling problems? Consider a canard configuration with a hi mounted mainplane and pusher prop on top. The pilot would seat within the fin/fuz/ mainplane mount, with a canard stab.
@baldrickscunningplan61547 жыл бұрын
Bigger Prop and geared Motor is required. Move more air at the same speed as the Aircraft. High revving small prop is very inefficient. Bit like driving along stuck in first gear.
@rlb967 жыл бұрын
Soooo, the cooling fan is mounted to the motor. You have to leave the motor running to cool the ESC. In the mean time the motor is drawing current from the battery. Current flow is causing the ESC to heat up. So you have to run the motor to run the fan to cool the ESC. Am I caught up in some kind of weird loop here, or would it make more sense to use another method of cooling the ESC after shutdown.
@Slumberjacksix7 жыл бұрын
Very interesting aircraft. I enjoyed watching the video. Just a couple of questions. What is the purpose of the 'faring' on the aft portion of the fuselage? Is it only for appearance? Does it not induce additional drag? Does it help cool the motor?
@RainbowAviation7 жыл бұрын
First of all, we are capturing any air that escapes around the pilot and we ducted through the motor and controller for cooling purposes. That being said, the primary purpose is for drag reduction. There is more drag reduction to be had by fairing the aft side of an object and there is to be had from fairing the front side of an object. Especially in this case where the object in front (pilot) is already fairly round. LOL. Even without qualitative measurements flying the prototype without the rear fairing showed a significant increase in drag. In addition, the amount of turbulence over the control surfaces on the tail were substantial without the fairing

Super stable, well built and very stylish glider. Cooling issues would improve much with two motors in tractor configuration on the leading edge of the wins (with the ESC's there too). Also, these tests would work better with some partial windscreen before the pilot as he and the shell behind him act as wind catchers producing excessive drag, a no-no in a glider.
@RainbowAviation7 жыл бұрын
Thank your kind comments. Interesting, because you talk about 2 issues the cooling of the ESC's and the motor versus the drag from the frontal area. Have built 2 other EMG-6 aircraft that used the forward fairing. However in this video, we capture all of the air that is not displaced around the pilot and force it through the rear fairing using it as cooling for the motors, controller, and batteries. This powerplant configuration was simply a test of the predator 37 motor and schulze controller.
@BushPilot4447 жыл бұрын
Yes, battery fire has got to be the #1 fear and reason for many sensor points among the batteries to send live info to the pilot. No amount of fire extinguisher systems would stop one of those fires either.
@jolllyroger17 жыл бұрын
BushPilot444 I would have a pull lever to dump the batteries and a mirror to see them... Lithium battery fires are hot fast and very dangerous I think it would be good to have a chute attached to the batteries with wire cables so they can burn out fully before reaching the ground to prevent starting wildfire as much as possible I think I would mount the Batts out on the strut as well just be a safer place for said fire to happen and easier to see

No, the goal for this test was simply to see if we could fly the airplane with off-the-shelf model airplane components. It was only designed to evaluate the predator 37 while simultaneously providing additional evaluation of the EMG-6 flight test characteristics. To make it a more practical installation it would probably be best suited for a prop reduction unit swinging a much larger propeller. Had the engine test results been better we would have used two of these motors on the wings.

How do you get flaps if you're capitulating their angles in flight? One turns down the other up seems strange.
@a.p.23567 жыл бұрын
I'm not 100% sure what you mean by "capitulating their angles," but this plane does not appear to have separate flaps. The control surfaces on the trailing edges of the wings are ailerons, and "one turns down and the other up" so the pilot can control roll. It may have flaps in the form of flaperons, which are ailerons which can be rotated to increase their angle of attack. This allows the use of flaps without adding an entirely separate control surface.
@yapandasoftware7 жыл бұрын
Aaron P: Do they all do this.. Because I flew Cessna 150 and I don't remember the flaps (ailerons) opposing each other for roll.. All I can remember was using my vertical stabilizer on the empennage which caused the outside edge of the wing to lift higher because it was traveling faster than the inside edge. My memory is foggy on this.. I thought the flaps worked in unison to give you more lift at slower speeds.

My dear friend! Designing to e-glider with an electric drive requires maximum reduction of energy losses from air resistance during flight. But your design to install a cockpit behind your back (not in front of yourself) is not only pointless, but also increases resistance due to the air intake by the cockpit as a trap behind your back (above the shoulders). The electric motor from among not too expensive and so does not have the necessary power, but with huge aerodynamic losses of electric motor power it turns out to be very little. Alas, with aerodynamics you obviously are not friends. The trial and error method is a day after day and also takes a lot of money, is not it? ;)))) Excuse me for truth! :)

I enjoyed the video & think the design is great apart from the cowling in front of the pusher propellor which would surely act as a scoop creating drag & the fact that the pilot is not strapped/secured in the seat properly but I'm Not disrespecting you as I think you've created a Very fine aircraft.I do understand that the pilot has fabulous access but it could be made safer is what I mean.
