On first hearing this "little girl" just now, I felt my jaw drop. I was working on my computer and she was being interviewed on the radio--I wasn't consciously listening--then she started strumming her ukulele and singing...something about wishing she could feel her mother holding her...knocked me for a loop. I remember the first time Elvis Costello performed on Saturday Night Live 40 years ago, and I thought he was putting us on--this is the opposite response. I wish she could remain eleven forever... By the way, I am a big Elvis Costello fan now but I didn't "get" him at first.

This makes me think of when Tina Turner covered "Missing You" by John Waite. In the original, Waite sings "I ain't missing you at all" with a feeling of self-delusion. It's heartbreaking because the listener knows he is lying to himself. Tina sings it straight, and when she says, "No matter what my friends say", it's the others who are lying. Tina knows the truth. She ain't missing ANYBODY! Dolly's version of "Jolene" is so tender and plaintive, and the line, "My happiness depends on you" is a plea to the other woman- don't break my heart. This girl is angry that someone else is coming in and wrecking her stuff. It's a completely different take on it, but it works just as beautifully. Really, really great version that honors the original without copying it.

I'm leaving this comment bc I just looked up who this girl was bc while at walmart in Lenoir city tn about 2 hours ago I saw a huge tour bus parked towards the back with a big "emi sunshine" label on both sides so while driving by it we actually saw people getting off and they started walking towards the china king that is next door and I saw this little girl but didn't think she was the "emi sunshine" lol well I guess she was!!
