Regarding beliefs (in a broader sense, not necessarily strictly religious ones) that are necessary to keep the society together, Nietzsche made an argument similar to Durkheim's about myths.

On if a totem can be an idea or not; I think it doesn't need to be, but nonetheless, people like to concretize the immaterial, so something can be a totem as an idea, but people will try and make a symbol.

To be fair there are relatively a lot of foreign students in the netherlands, I use some videos in my classes and I kinda hear that PP has the same accent that me and my friends have when talking english.

I agree that in some ontological sense, there is no difference in the "religious" nature between the wolf tribe and modern liberal democracy, but objectively, it's easy to see the vast difference in effect. Would you rather live under an Islamic theocracy or in Canada? Religio is a binding. That is, it's a magical binding of society. This isn't a new concept. The LXX is a magic book of creation. It all comes from the logos. It shapes the readers mind and creates a binding.

i believe it, but its really hard to convince people. like, if you claimed that the rationalist behaviour of enlightenment elites was actually some form of religious activity, they'd tell you to gtfo

By saying that you are positioning yourself aligned with people who would also say that, thus this statement reaffirms your place in society through ritual. I find this idea quite wholesome, that Within every rejection is an affirmation and that community is something that intrinsic to the human experience. I had not read any Durkheim before this pod and found his ideas refreshing. I wonder if Byung-Chul Han was at all influenced by Durkheim because he talks alot about the breakdown of rituals. (Even though that would be something that is impossible to Durkhiem)

@@adamlagerqvist8111 in all seriousness, I have not read any Durkheim either, but this way of looking at society, ideology, culture and signs as religious rituals does seem very useful and interesting. I should read him. and i also hope Pills and the rest of the gang do at least one more episode on this
