Imagine his private agony over being accused in that way. Such fortitude of spirit to be able to move on and create that outstanding Royal Opera House. Inspiring story.

It's always interesting to look into the accusers. Because you'll often find they achieved nothing REALLY noteworthy in their lives, except slamming everyone else. So this guy "wrote a book" and was a critic. Whoop de doo.

the Royals were quick enough to take his money, but later snubbed him, bad form

Typical of a lot of people who are great at accepting money.... you know a charity decided to put my grandmother on a debt collection list after they didn't get the donation they wanted. While she was in a nursing home no less. She agreed to NOTHING, signed NOTHING but they had a debt collection agency after her and my mother had to talk to them because she was running my nans financial affairs.

@@OffGridInvestor how can a charity do that? That doesn't make sense, they don't provide loans?

The problem was that he made the mistake of assuming that other businessmen were as honest and public spirited as he was. The coal gas people were never going to work with him as long as the product he supported was not under their control, and the development was likely to reduce their access to wealth.

I doubt it was the sort of thing that the family wanted to remember or pass down as an anecdote through the generations.

Just discovered from my brother's family tree research. told only a few days ago, notably even though I was raised in Harrogate, In truth, I had no idea that my great-grandmother Drake's from Leeds - grandmother's (yet to find out her name) brother was Samson Fox, thus making me the fourth cousin of Amila Fox. Notwithstanding there are likely to be thousands of us out there related to one another but this does not take away the fact that we share the same great-great-great-great grandparents, Jonas Fox and Sarah Fox (nee Pearson)

That's one of the main reasons why we don't have nicer things or a better way of life as a species. The big boys on top block other people's ideas. It's like electric cars vs. gas cars. If not for Elon Musk trying to elbow his way through, there still wouldn't be any mention of electric being possible.
