At the age of 17, he decided to leave Argentina and join the Arsenal youth team. Born into a difficult family, the decision to leave home at a young age made Martinez think a lot. He recalls the moment that changed his life:
“I saw my brother and mother crying, saying, 'Please don't go'. But I also saw my dad crying late at night because he couldn't pay the bills. So I have to be brave."

All Martinez moments in this World Cup were just like this The save against Australia The penalty saves against the Dutch The save from Muani The save from Coman, the mind games that made Tchouameni miss And a point no one has mentioned actually, make no mistake, the fact he ALMOST saved both of Mbappe's pens to his right side, getting a hand on both, definitely IMO mentally effected Tchouameni! Not a natural penalty taker, feeling more comfortable striking the ball to Martinez right, I believe he saw this and thought, ' I have to make sure I hit this right in the corner as he got so close to Mbappe's 2 on that side' And as a result he tried TOO hard to put the ball right in the right corner, over compensated, and ended hitting it wide It's absolutely NO coïncidence that it was the SAME side Mbappe had scored twice in with penalties, both times Emi nearly getting there with his hand This spooked the inexperienced Tchouameni! That's why Emi was the greatest keeper, if not player even of this world Cup Yes others had more moments, but every single one of Emi's moments was a great moment, a crucial moment, a match saving, match winning moment culminating in the final with the astonishing save at the end of injury time of extra time and his total dominance of the penalty shootout No one, not even Leo or Mbappé can match the number of crucial moments Emi Martinez produced in this WC And that's what greatness is about It was thrust upon him and he embraced it with 2 huge hands eagerly
