The look of resignation lorelai has every time her and emily actually bond and then emily snaps at her to get back at the status quo of having a traditional (in her mind) mother/daughter relationship is heartbreaking.

Lorelai is literally goals. She has a successful business, great friends, a nice house in a nice town and she's a single mom on top of it. What she was able to accomplish is amazing. And she found a guy like Luke? Dream life. I hate how people around her acted like she was such a fuck up or a dirty secret all the time. It's ridiculous.Emily would rather Lorelai make all the same choices as her and be miserable than make her own and be happy because then it would force her to question her own life

Emily is a toxic blend of “respect is given because I’m your mother, not because I’ve earned it” and “I know better than you”. Emily doesn’t want to learn or look inward, she so firmly believes that she’s in the right that she truly feels she’s done the right thing when she tells Luke to go back to her and thinks everything should just be ok once they get back together, as if she was the sole reason Luke and Lorelai got back together when she was the one who sabotaged their relationship in the first place…I mean, my god. I can’t believe if my own mother could see how happy I was in a relationship with a man like Luke, how happy my own daughter was about the relationship too, and Emily does not care one iota about her genuine happiness and invited the father of my child to come and try to “win me back”, to give Christopher false hope. It was awful.

I was looking for this comment. it’s absolutely INFURIATING seeing Emily break them up and still expect Lorelai to want to come to friday night dinner. then when she realizes Lorelai isn’t coming back she goes and basically demands for Luke to get back together with her. 18:04 Not saying or doing anything is very on brand for Richard Gilmore. Yes, Emily can be manipulative and terrible, but when Richard’s mom visits she is openly mean to Emily and Richard laughs off her every criticism like it’s nothing. As his wife, I would feel totally brushed to the side and not supported at all. He should have shut down his mother ESPECIALLY when he knew she never approved of Emily (i.e. the letter Emily discovers once Richard’s mother dies).

When you said "how do you sit up there and know that your wife is like that towards your daughter and don't do anything or say anything?" I just stared at the screen. That hit hard. My stepmom was emotionally abusive towards me and my dad always defended her behavior and made excuses for her. Meanwhile, I don't talk to either one of them anymore... so I guess I'm a bit of a Lorelai (sans child.)

Omg so few people talk about that scene where Lorelai goes to Emily to explain why she didn't share her news. Thank you. I love/hate that scene. It makes me shed a tear almost every time. If I'm in the middle of a rewatch and not really prepared for feelings, sometimes I'll skip it because it's too heavy. The fucked up dynamics at play are too real. (Lauren Graham is a powerhouse, and it's A CRIME she didn't get more leading roles after GG.) Side note: I thought the jokes Lorelai made about the painting of Rory were kind of hilarious. Rude, but hilarious. Your point about Emily showing up when Lorelai is acting like her. I got chills. I think it also applies to the scene after the debutante ball where Lorelai says: "People of means see what they want and take it" without consideration for others...and then she proceeds to take Luke's pie after he says to wait. It's funny but also illustrative of her hypocrisy. And I like your interpretation that Jackson was being used to speak to the theme of manipulation. That's an interesting take. I think Luke is used to highlight this at times. His remarks about colonization and consumerism are funny but true. Lorelai and Rory think they're against the shallow consumerist entitlement of Emily and Richard, but they do it in their own way too. (This is one of the only reasons I liked Logan in later seasons-- he really shows how Rory isn't above it all. And calls her out for it.)

I feel like you've really hit the nail on the head here. There are sooo many people who grew up in toxic families but haven't had the time, distance, or education/therapy to realize these people who they thought were loving were actually quite abusive. I mean I get it; we all want to believe we were loved and taken care of by the people whose job it was love and take care of us, and it's very painful to realize that isn't true for you, but at a certain point you have to wake up and except reality or else you're almost certainly doomed to repeat patterns and become an abuser yourself.

i started watching gilmore girls for the first time a couple months ago, and when i was first introduced to emily my jaw was on. the. floor. emily is an exact replica of my grandmother (just a little less rich) but the resemblance is uncanny. my mom also had me when she was in her teens and my gramma treats my mom just how emily treats lorelai, but my mom and i live with her which makes for a hostile environment 24/7. i also have a horrible relationship with my mom which is why i think i try to live vicariously through rory... but nonetheless gilmore girls is one of those shows that will always have a place in your heart (at least for me), especially if you relate to it a lot

I just finished season 2, as this is my first time watching the show entirely, and you’re analysis is spot on. I can always spot manipulation and I feel like the show is making it VERY obvious with Emily. What I didn’t realize entirely is how Emily affects Lorelei. Emily treats everyone like an extension of her own world, she just experiences life like everything is hers to own, to control, to shape, whereas she should be treating others like worlds apart, to discover, to understand, to cherish. And I still don't know how much of it is her fault, and how much is residual trauma that she also suffered (i.e. with Richard's mother). I guess, the real beauty of this show is that every character is portrayed with some inner conflict, and it also demonstrates how hard it is sometimes to grow out of a cage made up of our own emotional scars (which is frustrating to watch too sometimes).
@BeStillandKnow00008 ай бұрын
omg, i'm commenting so many times because i keep on having new ideas as i move through you videos... and yes, narcissistic family has a problem with individual thinking, you can't think for yourself, it's a betrayal to the agreed upon thought. what shocks me is how people react towards emily, even the actress herself despise what the character symbolizes, so she concludes that people like her character because of her natural charm as a person instead of the character itself... and yes, i can't blame her, she plays the character so stylishly. but i also think that a lot of people don't look that deep inside these character dynamics... they just see it for the pretty pictures and sense of nostalgia.

Growing up I always felt something was off with my relationship with my mom. I wasn't able to pinpoint what it was but even as a kid I felt somewhat of an emotional disconnect. When I first watched Gilmore Girls I was able to identify many, if not all, of the symptoms. My mom is a combination of Emily and Mrs. Kim; in her means to protect me she went completely overboard due to her fears of my getting hurt or sick, especially being the first child. Nowadays she's more Emily than ever, spouting constant verbal microagressions, lashing at me in frustration, giving me the silent treatment when I did something wrong or stupid. You name it. The worst part is she's AWARE she's the most narcissistic and egotistical woman when she gets in an irritable mood but of course, she'll never change. Difficult at her age (she's 69) but still, it's frustrating to see she feels nothing wrong with her toxic ways. I know I'm not perfect, I'm super flawed myself. But when her negative side is out in full force she has the ability to make you feel the worst person on the planet, and I've almost always been the one on the receiving end of her wrath. I always say it's her superpower. 😒 Anyway, I didn't mean to vent but I guess I needed to do it. Thank you so much for all your Gilmore Girls videos but especially for your Emily ones. I know I'm not the only one with a narcissistic mother but to hear someone using her platform to say it out loud it makes me feel less alone, validated and, most of all, understood.

Thank you SO MUCH for making this video because I felt the same exact way with Emily because OMG.. The amount of times Lorelai was put down by Emily and what I hate about Emily is that when she did stuff behind Lorelai’s back and made relationships that Lorelai had shatter she made it like it was her fault and didn’t put it on herself. Obviously when Lorelai snapped at her Emily got mad and made herself the victim in the situation even though Lorelai was the victim. And when Lorelai doesn’t tell her something to Emily or does something behind her back she looses it and always says “why didn’t you tell me? I could have helped?” Like you know Lorelai is a grown ass adult, she has her own house, her own inn, her OWN LIFE, and you dare ask her such stupid questions. Like she has her own life. Like I’m sorry that I don’t tell you things, but I know how you are going to treat me. And with the relationship with Emily and Lorelai was that Lorelai had to act or be the jester in every situation she was in to make Emily shine. It was the main reason why Lorelai moved away from her. And do you remember the episode where Emily and Richard were finding a house in Stars Hallow and how panicky she got and tried her best to convince Emily to not move in. But this is how I saw Emily and Lorelei’s relationship all in all.

my father is quite like emily. i’m currently watching the second season of gg and i catch myself seeing and hearing things from emily that i’ve been hearing and seeing from my dad my entire life. legit war flashbacks lol if my dad was a rich white woman i think he would be emily. anyway, it’s very hard to overcome a manipulative parent and the dichotomy of loving them (after all, they’re your parents) and all the scars they gave you. all this generational trauma and everything. my father haven’t spoken to me for three weeks bc he’s a conservative and i’m not. he’s giving me the silent treatment and 5 years ago, i would be feeling so guilty rn. so sad, feeling like a very small person and might even back down and come crawling back to him, just trying to make everything better at all coasts, make him love me at all coasts. i’m not gonna say it doesn’t hurt, but if you, like me or lorelay, are struggling with a narcissistic/manipulative parent, you have to put your feet down (if you can). don’t feel guilty for all the traumas your parents choose not to deal with. stay healthy and know that everything is going to be okay 💛

👏👏👏 I made it that far in the video lol 😆 I always assumed the setting up of the DAR meetings was meant to be a joke because it’s never mentioned again 😆 I still think Emily has flaws but at least she tries (unlike Chris’s parents who do not care about Rory). But Gilmore Girls is all about inheriting family trauma. We never meet Emily’s parents but I assume Emily grew up under a controlling mother. Hence the cycle continues. I imagine that if Rory wasn’t the perfect teenager than Lorelei would have had just as many fights with her. In fact, I think Rory’s obsession with being a good girl comes from her mom so again the cycle continues of being shaped one way or another by your parents.

Yes, it used to bother me that I could not be able to depend on my mother and had to look elsewhere (now idc, but man does it take time to get to this point & I still have decided she’s not one to go to)

I can across your channel due to your Rory video (I love GG). I’ve stayed for the Emily videos. Great stuff. Would you ever consider doing a character profile of how horrible Xander is in Buffy the Vampire Slayer in the same way?

Yes, please! Viewers and the writing are always making excuses for him, he rarely, if ever, feels the consequences of his actions, and he's so self-centered I feel like there's no way that many girls would be friends with him irl.

Hello I love your Gilmore Girls content. I was wondering if you would/could do a video on Emily's relationship with Richard's Mom. That will be an interesting video.
@Eph_Wilson Жыл бұрын
We could hate on Emily all day, the problem with Gilmore Girls is that it was built around the conflict of relationships between Lorelai, Rory, and Emily (hence the title - she's one of the Gilmore Girls), so they couldn't let Emily change too much without risking the premise of the show itself.

Soooo I have Mom like Emily. She’s wealthy, thin, my first bully. Etc. She told my daughter at three that she was “getting fat.” Then my daughter screamed at her. My Mom had the audacity to turn to me and ask why she was screaming 😑. (My daughter has never been fat. She’s ideally pretty actually. Everybody loves her.) She loves my Mom and I don’t separate them, but I am very wary of my Mother. She buys stuff for my daughter all the time, which is wonderful. However I’ve had to stand up to her many times. She can be very mean and uses money to sway people around her a lot. She hates my small house but in times like these, I’m proud to have a house. She also used to fuck with my job interviews when I lived with her because all the jobs were beneath our family. I just needed to work my way up in life and she wouldn’t let me start. I was and am very stunted at times… and my sister committed suicide instead of turning to my mother for help. Which says a lot. Fuck. It hurts. I’m a grown up but my inner child will always be in a little bit in pain.

Huh, still feel as though lorelai’s praise of Dean still influenced Rory’s decision to stick it out with him. She talked this man up 24/7 and Rory cared about her mom’s opinions and doing the right thing. Lorelei didn’t see how dean was (getting angry and whatnot) or feel what Rory felt when she saw or spoke to Jess, but she expressed her opinions at all times on how dean was good & trying
@j.m2512 жыл бұрын
Like, I don’t feel as though Lorelei is wrong in the Lorelei and Emily relationship at all. I’m team Forget Emily, like no matter what she said or did I couldn’t stand that woman fr. But, I don’t see how saying Lorelei played a role in Rory’s relationship means the opposite or takes away from Lorelai’s relationship due to Emily here.
@kierralovestv2 жыл бұрын
I do feel like Rory valued her opinion bc they’re so close but people often blame Lorelai for EVERYTHING that went wrong with Rory that’s moreso what I was referring to in the way that people try to hold Lorelai accountable much more than they hold Emily accountable for her part in how Lorelai processes emotion and it feels unbalanced.
@kierralovestv2 жыл бұрын
I agree with her influencing it (I absolutely don’t believe it was on purpose, I think she sometimes probably forgets just how much her opinion matters to Rory) because even in season 3 she tries to make it very clear to Rory to not make life changing decisions based off her. She harps on that in alot of the episodes

Did I like every decision Lorelai made. No I did not, but I loved her arc throughout the series. Lorelai did become more confident in her abilities and allowed herself to stand up to her parents. I also felt that Emily in later seasons did try to be better for her daughter because she did not want to lose that relationship and when Rori quit Yale, I liked how Emily and Richard tried giving her nice opportunities even if they should have encouraged her to go back to school. I feel as Emily got better, they did make Richard a stand in for her and he got more manipulative and vindictive. I also felt he can be horrible to Emily at times which explains her situation. He had no problem when his mom abused her. He belittled her work even though he relied on it for his status and snuck things on Rori without talking to anyone. For example, I think Emily just wanted the tour of Yale. She did not approve Richard getting her a last second interview that Rori had no time to prepare for.

Love the analysis but just thought I’d throw in how much of Emily needs to be explained in the context of class. Emily isn not pathological as we can see by her character development after Richard dies, but she can’t give Lorelei what she needs bc Emily herself was never taught any emotional intelligence/regulation. I’m their circles family is just financial and contractual obligations (and the social obligations that go with that).

I will give credit to writers who show not everyone is black and white sometimes their mistakes is their doing while other times it's not entirely their fault but the other person is and makes it seem like it is bcuz of manipulation. Emily is a complicated character who had her own issues which I get why she's like this but that does not mean I excuse her actions on how she acts around her daughter and granddaughter.

Just for the record, this person watching on a tablet,has never watched SpongeBob. I have however just finished rebinging season 2 and I just noticed for the first time evee that Rory kissed two other guys while dating Dean. She's always been a cheater. And there's joke's that I only just get. Harold Shipman, Leopold and Lobe.

Emily IS manipulative. She's done some very questionable things. That doesn't mean she's entirely evil or doesn't have a good side, or that you can't love her as a character. What makes her so interesting is how complex she is.

What did you mean when you asked what a Coming Out / introduction to society type ball was? Almost everyone has heard of them - I literally just watched an Australian 80's miniseries yesterday Set In The 1930's or something and a character announced she was having one...
