The thing is that that part was incoherent, they never spoke again, there was never closure to that relationship. I never understood why they didn’t get back together, or why Emily & Riley didn’t let him in on the plan against Amanda. The first time I watched the show I hated Emily even after her character development, but after rewatching I really feel for her in season 2 onward.

I don't think the romantic type of love is special. And I am started to think that the romantic type of love isn't real. I mean about more than half of romantic couples either break up with each other or divorce each other, while most platonic best friends remain friends until death. I think that having a platonic best friend is a lot better than having a romantic partner or spouse is. Having someone who's like a sibling to you is a lot better than having a romantic partner is. Also, you would more likely be much closer to a person who's like a brother or sister to you than you would be with a partner or spouse. People tend to fight with their partner or spouse a lot more than they do with a platonic best friend, and you never fight with your best friend the way you fight with your partner or spouse. Partners and spouses are just temporary. If you break up or divorce them, it's hard to go back to them. With your platonic best friend, you're going to make things work, because they are your best friend, they are your go to partner. It's always easier to make amends with them than it is with a romantic partner or spouse. Most people seem to be a lot more comfortable around their platonic best friends than they are around their romantic partners or spouses. A platonic best friend is one of the best things you could ever have. A platonic best friend can be someone you trust the most, and they can be your confidant and coach. People tend to trust their platonic best friends more than their romantic partners, and that's a fact.

Why did they break up

While at the mall, Emily sees Amanda speaking to Lucien about her plan to prevent the team from getting to Nationals and realizes that she is a double agent. Emily notifies Riley of the news, resulting in Riley creating a plan to make everybody hate her so that Amanda will trust her, making it easier to take her down. Emily tries to gain Amanda's trust, and is eventually forced by Amanda to break-up with Hunter in order to prove her loyalty to her, to which Emily unhappily complies.
