The death of Emily Mason last December at the age of 87 left the art world mourning the loss of one of its great figures of color abstraction. Over a six-decade career, Mason established her place in American art history with her singular style of lyrical and graceful, expressive painting, reflecting her deep love of nature through layered hues and rhythms of vibrant colors. Emily Mason: In Memoriam includes a selection of more than 30 recent paintings on canvas created from 1987 through 2019, including some of her last works. In Memoriam is the ninth major Mason exhibition presented by the gallery, and honors the gallery's special relationship with this extraordinary artist.

...The gallery's staff comments are pertinent and elegant (which is so rarely found)... Overall, the quality of the paintings is high and the color sensibility, unique. The major quality is the aptitude to organize the color story in strong, stable yet fresh, configurations. In my view, Miss Mason's work is far superior to both Wolf Kahn's and Frankenthaler's (whose name came to my mind while looking). An extraordinary artist, indeed... I'm thrilled to have discovered her work...
