With all of that illegal immigrant labor unemployment is low and more importantly the labor force participation rate for legal workers is at a 40 year high. That’s a pretty clear message we need and rely on illegal immigrant labor. But if you want to end it it’s easy - mandatory minimum of 1 year in jail for any employer who hires an illegal immigrant. Migration would dry up, many would leave, prices would skyrocket, we’d have huge labor shortages, but it would work. It’s very telling that none of the anti immigration politicians ever propose this - they all fundamentally know that we rely on illegal immigrant labor and they know ending that would be disastrous for them and American business.

If we kept the money and investment in our own country and native born citizens the country would get stronger. I agree we could end it tomorrow. They know it’s the way to deal with it, but they don’t want to solve the problem because they know it’d be horrible for profits and prices and therefore political futures. And yeah lots of money goes back in remittances, but they also pay into social security and Medicare but don’t get to receive it. They’re subsidizing our retirements. And wages would go up some amount, but only in the sectors where that’s a big effect. Construction, agriculture, kitchens etc. So if you’re a lawyer, police officer, retiree, a teacher, office worker, car salesman wages don’t go up but prices would go up A LOT on construction and restaurants and food. So if you believe it would be better for the country fine, but let’s acknowledge that it would have significant downsides, political risk, and economic disruption, and that all of the anti immigration politicians don’t want to solve the problem because of that.

Emily you got rolled at 36:40. You asked about wage competition from immigrants, Beto admitted that illegal immigrants undercut the market for native workers. True enough. But you failed to push back when Bato made the false suggestion that if you just make all workers legal wage competition magically evaporates. When you let 3 million people into the US with work permits a year that has an effect on the value of labor and the leverage that workers have in the economy. Continue that year on year and the results will be disastrous for the people at the bottom of the economic ladder and our tax base. It is clear that Beto wants to give millions of Foreign Nationals access to the American labor market, year on year. Ever growing GDP is a Ponzi scheme that benefits the 1%. Growing GDP in the context of income inequality only makes the rich richer faster. Beto immigration policy would be a disaster for American workers and a disaster for our environment. Our goal should be sustainability and broad-based middle class prosperity. I think it's only fair that you try and find someone for your show who will represent the American worker on the question of immigration and the effects on the labor market (that would not be a typical Republican).

As an East Texan, travelling thru El Paso was a little terrifying. Parts of it looked like a disaster. And we were warned, in El Paso, to never travel to Ciudad Juarez because of how unsafe it is. Ciudad was and is dangerous not because of the crossing environment, but because it is a hotspot for drug cartels and drug mules/human smugglers who want to bring people into the US. When El Pasoans (specifically Hispanic/Mexican Americans) tell you to avoid Ciudad or even areas on our border near Ciudad, you follow that advice.

Again as an East Texan, from my POV El Paso had parts that looked ravaged, similar to how Buffalo NY looks today, but El Paso was more run down. I certainly didn't feel safe - but I'm a traveller and not a local. And perhaps cartel crime is down from 15 years ago - but I'm guessing it's still not great from the warning given to us. It seems El Pasoans are touchy that I'm pretty much stating that their city/town looks dumpy. But facts are facts. Been to other border towns/cities. Some are rundown as well. O'Rourke never directly addressed Emily's polite questions, particularly about the costs of immigration, especially for employees (lower wages and benefits, high housing costs), how this impacts already strained social services, etc., and whether the benefits outweigh such costs. In contrast, someone like Peter Zeihan, who is pro-immigration, especially Central American immigration, is honest about the costs but spells out what the benefits mean in the big picture. O'Rourke, when given questions from Emily, either positioned himself against bigotry or appealed to historical inevitability, as if this isn't something we can democratically decide, as when the American Federation of Labor pushed through an end to most immigration in 1924. O'Rourke here comes across as a lightweight and a millionaire liberal. Contrary to some suggestions in the comments, we don't need Boomer-tier rudeness from the interviewers (I hate that stuff); long-form interviews speak for themselves.

I see a lot of people in the comments saying how immigrants depress wages. And that’s why they need a union. Beto could’ve argued the pro immigration position a bit better if he leaned more heavily into this. If both immigrant and native born labor is pooled together through unionization, then wages won’t be depressed (and will actually increase from where they are now - we have low unionization now). Instead corporate interests have successfully been dividing and conquering working Americans for the past decades. None of this is to say that we don’t need immigration reform or legal immigration but just know immigrants are an easy scapegoat that others have used successfully in the past. Don’t fall for the sleight of hand.
