Flanger has always been my least favorite effect on harp -- so much that I haven't featured one on the channel in over two years. I got my hands on every flanger I could to find what I could possibly like about flangers and how to use out-of-the-box flanging techniques in a practical context. I was really surprised, and found some of my new favorite pedals in the process.
The real flangers were the friends we made along the way
More flangers that I had to edit out of the video due to video pacing and length:

Love this episode! I think flanger is always either caught in the middle of other effects, or too far outside many people's comfort zone; I've always struggled with it a little bit, but I think it's one of the effect categories where something can be good or bad or just not your speed and it's therefore worth it to actually sift through and find the one for you and stand by it. My personal fave harp sounds from this were the BF-2, Komorebi, and the BL-82 (which is like the best pedal in four categories in wasn't even made to be) but my favorite thing about flangers is the notch filter flanging creates and how much it can influence other effects which is why my favorite "flanging" effect is probably a really short digital delay that can really lean into its hollow sound because it doesn't have the lfo moving it around. What I'm saying is I listened to too much Foals in high school. Best moment for me (aside from the BF-3 forum slander) in this was hearing Joe's drums through flange; I find that with the wide frequency range, the atonal characteristics, and the rhythmic nature of drums really shows of modulation pedals in a way that something like a guitar or harp can't.

The komorebi is by far the best flanger ever. Had sold my last flanger [ morley sapphire] in 1999 and never thought I d ever get one again. Here comes the komorebi. Amazing sounds, great versatility especially speed wise and the fact that it can be connected to other dreadbox effects in a modular synth way makes every other flanger obsolete. I use its lfo to control the filter in the disorder or use the envelope of the disorder to control the flangers rate with my dynamics. Top notch

I am rooting for more Dreadbox but CV modulation from some external sources. Adjusting the rate from a Chromatic module, or modular synth used for a lead line to give some wobble to the rate of the near Barberpole Flange effect the Komorebi can do, perhaps. Chiptune drums run through the Komorebi and use the LFO out to modulate the Treminator, or any other effect that can be modulated for a harp effects chain.

Loooove my pyramids. I usually use just a little bit of slow modulation with it but I love how crazy it can get. Def works much better with an expression pedal

I always pronounced it with a long A as a teenager. Always wanted a flanger and played with it on my little Zoom multifx pedal. Of all the pedals i own, i still don't have one! Putting a flanger on with a bitcrusher on the Oblivion sold me. One of my next gear searches now...

I’m not finished watching the video yet, but I’m wondering if you guys are going to mention through-zero flanging. It’s super cool and super useful especially for synthesizers and drum machines. I love to double a drum track and put through-zero flagging on one of them. The Electro-Harmonix stereo electric mistress does it. You can basically tune the Flanger to a specific pitch and it gives it a very metallic sound.

I have had quite a few flangers, starting with Boss BF-2, but also more exotic ones. I remember flanging from Small Faces Ichiko Park, and a few Hendrix songs, and that is the flanging that I still like. Today I have a MXR analog one. Ibanez also makes good ones, and the associated company that I forgot the name of.

I watch your channel so often I literally dream about effects pedals. I had a dream the other night that I found my old Ibanez TS7 in a drawer somewhere.

Flangers are the olives of the pedal effect world. Amazing. I have had fun running a flanger and tape delay in a stereo feedback loop

I have an Ibanez AD-230, which is a flanger and delay. It can be both beautiful and nuts. Also possibly the most expensive flanger.

I love my BF-2 MIJ... always seems like you can find something new and unique each time. Sometimes is good to keep the RES on 0

13:40 - If you make more videos like this and updated pedals come out, you should make a small update video that goes over all those new pedals that've come out. Could be one way of countering that xD

The one big omission for me and one I'd love to hear on Harp is the Electric Mistress. It's more Chorus-like than most Flangers, or at least can be used in place of one. I'm also in the position where I wasn't super into the airplane noises, but I fell in love with the Mistress. I had a Stereo Mistress - digital pedal with Chorus and Flanger, then the big Big Box Deluxe, and now I use a little Mooer Eleclady. Another type of Flanger that's kind of interesting is a Hi-Band flanger - I owned the Boss HF-2 for a while, it was a really nice tastey purplish pink and I kind of miss it for that reason. One of the pedals you demo'd probably has it as an option though - I'm not sure I'd keep one around as a dedicated pedal.

Agreed! The Electric Mistress can be a little noisy, but between the two modes you can find some pretty amazing sounds. There's a guy in eastern Europe who makes an exact copy of the original that he calls the Roxanne and I got one... it's pretty awesome, and cheaper than an original :)

Electric mistress has always been my go-to. It’s used by so many guitarists and on so many rock songs that I’ve never considered flanger to be an under-utilized effect. David Gilmour, for instance, has flanger (e-mistress) on a ton of his solos. The Mooer e-lady/elec-lady is a really good inexpensive clone for anyone looking. Other than that, I use my Strymon v2 deco - probably my favorite, (almost) always-on pedal now, which has a great flanger built in (only engaged when pedal is depressed, though, which has pros and cons)

Flangers is probably my favourite fx. Great to see this video. The Kawai RV4 has a good one, Alesis Quadraverb has a good one, but i really want a pedal flanger. The more metallic the better.

I like flangers but I think that's the Metal-Zone of effects pedals since the sounds it produces can get really messy and obnoxious when you don't know what you're doing. As you said, when paired with other effects it can be beautiful. Flangers with univibes are like *chef kiss*.

I like stereo flangers, especially when mixed relatively low with the original signal. Bonus points for putting reverb or echo on the flanger signal only.
