I love this Emily. I used to be a terrible shopper. I woukd buy clothes on sale and have bo idea what I woukd wear the piece with. I now actually save money because I shop way less. I do shop for clothes at estate sales and have found some beautiful timeless pieces. I got a faux leather black jacket for one dollar and it was on sale at The Real Real for sixty percent off but still 163.50. I have found so many good blazers, jackets, coats, white shirts, pants, jeans etc. It took me years to learn what looks best on me. I love that your husband always has loved your edgy look. ♥ ❤❤❤

Hair is so important! As someone of a certain age with greying (stopped coloring during the pandemic) wavy hair and definitely NOT the bone structure for a shaved head, I struggle with making my hair edgy. It’s a version of shag now, which is ok. I had an asymmetrical cut before the pandemic, which I really liked, but somehow with my hair not being dark anymore it doesn’t seem quite right. It’s an ongoing exploration!

When I was in college I dressed totally preppie, it was the right look for me. But it was the early 80s and I rocked a super short punk hair cut. It was also the right look for me. Because hair is easy and relatively cheap to change, but a wardrobe is not. I still think the same way, but these days my hair is more classic and I tend to get more edge from my footwear and from the juxtaposition of my apparel pieces. Fashion and style, like life, is a journey and we should all continue to grow and evolve.

It's so true that we tend to dress according to how we perceive others want us to dress. I know I'm guilty of this! Many years ago, I thought that dressing soft and feminine was how I HAD to dress. It seemed that that's what my mother wanted, so was that what everyone else expected too? It truly is a journey finding out who we are, understanding it and owning it. Now, at 69 (see, it's never too late!) I'm (re)discovering who I am in retirement. You guessed it! I headed straight to my closet several months ago to help me really "see" who I am NOW and how I want to use my clothing to speak out each day about who I am. Like you, I'm finding that it's so much easier to connect with myself by editing my clothing pieces to those that are "speaking" to my soul. What that translates to, look wise, is the sleek, clean, chic, sophisticated ascetic of Eileen Fisher. I throw in a dose of edgy and, VOILA, I (seemingly) appear! Less really is more. Continue embracing your journey.........

Hair is everything! I shaved my head and felt so free. I started to focus on accessories. I felt more feminine with shirt hair. I am almost 60 and still keep my sides shaved with some locs on top.

Actually just buzzed my hair the same way about two weeks ago (though I had a barber do it, as when I buzzed my own hair during lockdown, it was often uneven). SOOOO great for the hot summer! I mean, I usually have short hair -- often in a pixie style -- but this buzzed style has been my go-to the last few summers and it's perfection!

I have had that haircut since 1970 & I am not happy that so many now have it. (I originally, 1967, had the Mary Quant haircut but un 1970 cut all all the bangs. Later taught myself to buzz. I was the only flt att't at Pan Am with that cut.)

Definitely! I'm 51 and I have this hair-cut and it's currently a bright red! Usually I swing between bright reds and purples -- so fun! People sometimes tell me I 'shouldn't be dyeing my hair and to embrace the grays' (my natural hair is mostly brown with salt and pepper grays), but that's not why I do it -- I've been coloring my hair bright colors since I was in my 30s when my hair was still all-brown. I'm not covering grays, I'm just being myself! 😃
