This movie is so authentically Detroit, as well. We were the "313" area code most of our lives, and I've partied countless times in that same room at The Shelter. It just means so much to all of us from Detroit. It's crazy that he went in the Hall of Fame the other day as the greatest-selling hip-hop artist of ALL TIME -- and he actually opened for my friends back in the day. They were a group named Prophit, and Em opened for THEM. Now he's a Hall of Famer. You brought back so many memories. Thank you. This sub earlier tonight was definitely so well-deserved.

Rabbit's final rap is so powerful. You aren't able to say those things about yourself, with such confidence, if you haven't been THROUGH it. I know that from experience. It is very much a case of, 'There is nothing you can say to me that I haven't already said to myself a million times and a million times worse.' That is real depression. Knowing yourself and living with yourself. His confidence with that is powerful and there is nothing the other man could say to undo the statement Rabbit made with his verse.

Regarding the Vanilla Ice references, during that time Eminem broke out, every single TV interview he did, the one interviewing him were going "Before you, there was only Vanilla Ice doing white rap." But Eminem himself was quick to point out that Vanilla Ice was NOT the first one, the BEASTIE BOYS were. In fact, if you listen to songs like "Pass the mic" and "Sure shot" you'll hear a lot of where Eminem got his flow from. The use of a lot of background voices, for example, is to ape the Beasties' way of finishing each other's lyrics. But for some strange reason, people tend to forget that the Beastie Boys were white.

It's been a long time since I've seen this movie and I just didn't get it when I was younger. I love how Papa Doc's back story is one we would all love to have for the most part - going to a private school, parent's with a great marriage - but because he's coming to this place and pretending to be something he's not while Rabbit is 100% authentically himself (even if that authenticity means a life of trauma and struggle), he's always going to be at a disadvantage. You can't fake good art and say that it comes from something that doesn't exist. Fake is always found out.

@Mewse12032 жыл бұрын
Papa doc: this whole part is MASTERFUL. He does something here that pro wrestles call the "double turn". He solidifies his face turn and turns Doc heel. In his verses, Rabbit 1)does exactly what stated in video: he helps them relate to his struggle and shows them he survives Detroit right along with them. That is done partially through his bars about himself but also through the whole "everybody from the 313" part, a part that I don't think would have worked had he tried it in the first 2 battles. It's only after defeating the other two that they are willing to be on his side. Hell Lotto even says something similar in his verse: "You think they're going to feel the shit you say?" So what does he do? He pulls them in with some hometown crowd hype and uses that to set the field. He is tells them he isn't some poser white kid from a rich white suburb here slumming it for street cred. He lives in poverty just like everyone else. He helps them relate to him and their similar struggle. He also shows that he has knowledge of hip hop using lines they all know and love.(Halfway crook, 1,2,3 and to the 4). He also plants his thesis: I'm like you...but Papa Doc, he's a liar. 2)he shows Papa Doc for the poser he is. He doesn't struggle like they all do He isn't from the mean streets like they all are. He's not from a broken home. He's gotten real opportunities they all have not. He should be proud of his life. Instead he is down in the 313 acting like he struggles and is a gangster. But he's not. He's a rich private school kid beating up B-Rabbit because he reflects back the truth of who he is: an outsider. So we start out with Doc respected and Rabbit disliked. Rabbit slowly builds his reputation before laying himself bare, and killing Doc's credibility. He then ends it with here I am people I don't give a fuck if you like me or not but now you know who I am, you know who he is and ...Papa Doc has nowhere to go Like I said, masterful. I could talk about this battle for AGES.
@harrywang5675 Жыл бұрын

Hi, Polo, thank you so much for this video. I hadn't seen this movie since it was first released. At that time, I knew very little about rap and even less about how to tell if something was good rap. I still don't listen to a lot of rap (I just know which songs I like) but I've since learned a bit more about what and who makes really good rap, i.e. Eminem is a genius, Ludacris has made some fantastic stuff I really like and is a great actor to boot, Missy Elliott has done some great stuff, and NF raps like he's living my life. But you pointed out so many dynamics and deeper things going on in this rap battle that I had missed, and I really appreciate that. Very informative and entertaining video - nicely done!

Papa Doc made a fatal mistake by making him go first and b-rabbit knew it. Right before he turns to hype the crowd he gives a sly smile. LOVE THAT PART. His stare is so intense I don't know how anyone wouldn't feel at least a little shiver of fear standing across from him, lol. Eminem always appears so serious all the time, but he's got a wicked sense of humor which shows up with what comes out of his mouth. Pure genious.

I get the idea of Papa Doc though. Before that B-Rabbit always chose to be second which gives him the advantage of knowing everything what the opponent said and then making fun of it. But it was as if that was a trap all along and if you build your whole act only of trying to do the same slurs as everyone else against a white guy who wants to rap then thats easy enough to predict. Also I guess Papa Doc didn't expect at all to be called out on the fact that he is just a "fake gansta"

Yeah, Papa Doc didn't know that Rabbit knew his real name and that he attended private school, according to the girl at the party that knew his sister. Plus he didn't expect Rabbit to predict everything he'd bash him on like living in a trailer with his mom, Wink messing around with his girl, giving him the black eye and so forth.

3 rules in Rap: 1) Don't mention Em's daughter 2) Don't let Em go first 3) Don't let Em go second
