U can tell when this track came out in 1999 that Eminem was the rapper to watch... he was leaving most in the dust. The context of this song for Dr. Dre was after his split w/ Death Row Records in 1996. He was regarded as the hot hip hop producer coming out of N.W.A. in 1991 and when he launched Death Row Records in 1992 w/ his partner Suge Knight... Dr. Dre's album 'The Chronic' was a huge success selling over 3 million copies... his work w/ Snoop Dogg (The 'Doggystyle' album in 1993) sold even more - 5 million copies. Death Row was huge business by 1995 when 2Pac joined the Death Row roster. But behind the scenes, Death Row was becoming a mix of abuse & violence. Dr. Dre himself was caught up getting busted and going to jail, while Suge Knight was pushing his weight in the label. After N.W.A.'s Eazy-E died, Dre saw his label caught in a feud w/ East Coast label Bad Boy Records and escalating violence between the two factions... so in early 1996, he walked out of Death Row. He signed over all his production work and master tapes to Suge Knight to avoid any retaliation. With the money he had made, he started a new label Aftermath. Death Row collapsed in 1997 after the death of 2Pac and Suge Knight getting arrested... the label had no way to replace Dr. Dre. However, Dr. Dre's first attempt to produce & introduce a new roster of hip hop artists in 1997 fell flat when the record 'Dr. Dre presents the Aftermath' sold 1 million copies and failed to launch any careers. Dre was more comfortable making beats for other artists than getting up front on the mic. In 1998, the critics were savaging Dr. Dre and assumed he was finished... but a tape from Jimmy Iovine introduced him to Eminem, and in 1999, the first major Eminem record 'The Slim Shady LP' went to #1 and sold 4 million copies... Dr. Dre was back in business and released his album 'Chronic 2001' in 1999 that included a reunion w/ Snoop Dogg, and that record sold over 6 million copies... 'Forgot about Dre' was a track telling off his critics who had prematurely declared his career was over after Death Row.

Song rightfully won Best Rap Performance by a group/band. Should've won more most likely looking back at the other nominations for other things in the rap category. Hitman btw was another Aftermath artist around the same time Em was making it big. He never really took off as Dre also signed The Game a little while later and mainly focused on both Em and Game, while Hitman kind of faded in the back
