That was a line that you caught (even though you were wrong) he says *"if I can't batter women how am I supposed to bake them a cake"* is a double entendre. If I can't batter/"beat" women how am I supposed to make a cake. Because you have to "batter" the cake mix to make a cake

He got so many double meanings in this track! I can't catch all of them myself but if you are curious and want to know how much he put in this song I would recommend you looking at Stevie Knights reaction to this song. Not one other rapper can make a lyrical masterpiece like this and still hit the mainstream, NOT ONE. People think Eminem is just rapping fast and not making sense because they don't understand the homages/references. Eminem said he was the rap god and he didn't get one diss because of that... Who would dare after this demonstration of skill.

This unironically, his only haters are brain dead idiots who can't even conceive the level that he's performing on. He could not put out another record for thirty years and still be the GOAT even though his humble nature wouldn't let him admit it. He claims he's only top 4, but we all know the truth.

I also want to mention that Eminem and other rappers often master a breathing technique often called, "circular breathing," where they produce sound on both the exhale _and_ inhale* (it's still air resonanting in your "voicebox," regardless of direction, right?). One major problem with mastering this skill is handling the C(02) (carbon dioxide, obviously) that would be emitted during your exhale (which you would then inhale again as you then immediately say something else). Nice alliterations, btw :-)

I just love Em since his first album came out. He's so good to make so funny digression to serious subject he's pointing. He does have an exceptional talent to observe reality. And technically - oh dear - he's a rap god. :) Although lately I'm in a different kind of music, I hold Marshall in a special place in my heart.
@notbrianbradley
@notbrianbradley Жыл бұрын
9:48 You were actually correct (and it's actually an even _better_ double+-meaning because batter is what is used to make cake, not better (an adjective/adverb)). He was just referring to "hatred towards women," but the lyrics suggesting he wants to bake them a cake, a nice gesture, is a bit of a multi-meaning, as well; why would you bake a cake for someone you hate (unless you poisoned it or something, of course)? EDIT: I added a few after the first reply to my comment from @leemac1774 is a "bar" that is maybe a little higher than "Eas(y | iest)-Intermediate," but is a different category of rhetorical device that shows another shade (no pun intended - Nice alliterations, btw, so I was going to do that but then figured it was silly...wait that starts with "s") of brilliance from Mr. Mathers'. BTW I was going to type out a few simple examples in your "Godzilla" video that might help put you further on your "journey" (sorry to sound trite) to understanding how to pick up "bars"/double+-entendres in Mr. Mathers' art, but I accidently (my cursor all of a sudden "jumped" up to the close tab when I was clicking on what I was typing; yes I should've typed it in Notepad++ like I normally do first, I know) didn't submit it. I'll get around to it, as I think it will help you quite a bit. There were a few examples of, what I classified as, "Easy" and "Easiest-Intermediate" (because they required domain-specific knowledge and weren't completely straight-forward, but otherwise "easy" to pick up to someone who is capable of doing so or is looking for them.) I will get around to doing that again soon and I hope it helps. EDIT: I came back and I figured I'd add a few from this (and a few other) song(s) to give you an idea of what I mean real quick (I type really fast and enjoy writing long-form...). And, yes, I did write this in Notepad++ first (har har). One preface: "Easy" to me doesn't mean easy in general; it's just a categorization because it can get really complex, of course. Please don't take offense if you don't get an "Easy" "bar". Also, please don't take offense (well, at all, please, because I sincerely am trying only to help) if I'm explaining something you already know (maybe something like "mansplaining" or whatever BS term that doesn't have to include an identity and thus further divides us as humans). § "Easy" ¶ This Song ("Rap God") 3:06 "How could I not blow? All I do is drop F-bombs." - To "blow," if you didn't know, is to "blow up" in popularity/competence/action, but obviously when paired with the word "bomb" changes meaning (but he is referring to "blow" in the competence/action domain, I'm quite sure) 3:10 (right after) "Rappers are having a rough time, period. Here's a Maxi Pad." - Obviously this is referring to the grammatical use of "period" to mean something like, " without any caveats," but also to menstruation. * Many of lines are references to rappers (which are usually then immediately shown). For instance, the lyrics use Busta Rhymes, a famous rapper, known for rapping very fast. I'll reference him a bit later. * The one I referenced earlier that you thought you missed, but actually didn't. ¶ Other Songs "Killshot" * "Playing dead: that's the only time you hold (still|steal)" - To hold steal means to hold a gun, but the way he pronounces the regular phrase "hold still" makes it sound like it could be either. Also, what types of people (who don't have unfortunately physical disorders like Parkinsons :-/) have problems sitting still? "Godzilla" * "Better hit the deck like the card dealer." - There's the meaning of a, say, blackjack dealer hitting the card deck, but also meanings about hitting the deck due to intoxication, among other meanings. * "If you ever gave a damn, raise your hand. Because I'm about to set trip: vacation plans" - To "set trip" in gang-banger vernacular is to go to another "set" in your gang and kill a member (usually as punishment). So he's saying he's going to "set-trip" on his "gang," the set of professional hip-hop artists, and punish them (using a violent metaphor). * "These chicks are spazzin' out. I only get more *handsome* and _flyer_ . I got them passing out like what you do when you *hand some* one _fliers_ " * "'Cause my lyrics never sit well, so they wanna give me the chair. Like a paraplegic [...]" § "Easy-Intermediate * 1:54 "My pen will go off when I half-cock it." - To half-cock a gun is to only raise it half way up, but also means "only partly ready; poorly prepared." So the lyrics are basically saying, at least for one "double meaning," that he's always ready, as his pen will "go off" when he merely "half-cock"s it * 3:35 "[...] Everybody loves to root for a nuisance. ' Hit the Earth like an asteroid that did nothing but shoot for Moon (Pew) since I use it as a vehicle to Busta Rhymes. Now I lead a new school full of students." - This should probably be classified at a higher level, but if an asteroid is aimed at the Moon but ends up hitting the Earth, it is a vehicle of nuisance to society (as society exists on the Earth). There's then a reference to Busta Rhymes (like I mentioned earlier) and then a mention of "school full of students," which relates to the astronomical references, but also has the face-value meaning of simply behing a "Rap God" and teaching younger generations of hip hop artists. EDIT: As @leemac1774 pointed out, Busta Rhymes was also a founding member of the hip-hop group "Leaders of the free school." ¶ Other Songs * "Killshot" - "You Satanist." - Do you think the Rap Devil would be a Satanist, worshipping themselves? It sounds more like MGK has a Messianic/God Complex (and yes, Eminem has this very song, but he says "I'm beginning *to feel like* a Rap God," not claiming he is directly, although he mentions he has *the key* to rap immortality (but he doesn't say he is able to use it necessarily, and because "mortality" is obviously part of "immortality" (despite it being an antynomn), he is acknowledging mortality and thus you could say he is aware that he will not be able to use the key. Although, that's probably a stretch and there are other lines (including the title itself) that show something similar, but it's much more nuanced). Regardless, Rap Devil was after this (obviously - MGK is just doing a simple switch on the title, further adding to the "copycat" idea). Worshipping yourself could also be construed, although I would say it's a sibling category and not the same, as narcissism (e.g., to think he's the younger Eminem when he's really the "whack [him]"; I mean "[Em's] biggest flops are his greatest hits."). Eminem basically destroyed the entire diss track from MGK with a single word. - "Say you'll run up on me like a phone bill, sprayin' lead" - There's the meaning of a phone bill (which has (well not anymore but we still call it "lead") lead put on it, or at least ink, but still) and "running it up," but of course "spraying lead" also means shooting an automatic gun. - "The game's mine again and ain't nothin' changed but the locks. So before I slay this b*tch, mwah, give Jade a kiss" - This should probably be a bit higher up, but I'll include it because it's in the same category as @{Lee Mac}'s contribution to my never-to--be-published-by-any-respectable-institution novel here. Jadakiss is a rapper that was once in the hip-hop group called, "The Lox," and also, much like Jay-Z has "jigga" and Eminem has "chicka," used "muah" often. But then The Lox and "Ruff Ryders" (the _de facto_ leader being DMX) "merged" (from the Wikipedia on "Ruff Ryders Entertainment": "Ruff Ryders began as the managers of DMX and The LOX."). But, Eminem spelled it "locks," referring to his hair (he no longer is bleaching it), and references Jadakiss, obviously, with "Nothing's changed but the [locks | Lox] so before I begin this [....] _Muah_ give Jade a kiss." BTW, Jade is Mr. Mathers' daughter Hailie's middle name. * "Godzilla" - "My whole squad's in here, walkin' around the party. A cross between a zombie apocalypse and B-Bobby, "The Brain" Heenan which is probably the same reason I *wrestle* with _mania_ ." - B-Bobby, "The Brain" Heenan was in a few of those theater-wrestling (e.g. WWE) and paticipated in Wrestlemania. Part 1 of 2 due to character limits and inspiration/contribution from @leemac1774's comment.

@@leemac1774 Nice addition to the list that fits (I couldn't include everything because of character limits and, of course, I'm not a Masters of Science in barology (but I'm also not merely a "oh I get it now" either ;-)). I will add it (with credit) and also the Jadakiss "Muah" from Killshot, because I think those are a good category of rhetorical devices (not quite double-meanings maybe but still) requiring domain specific knowledge that Eminem cleverly uses as if they weren't references.
@notbrianbradley
@notbrianbradley Жыл бұрын
@@blexible4894 Yes it is. I hope that was complimentary and not saying I was way too verbose (which I tend to be*, although I did say I like long-form writing and type really fast ("fast" is qualitative, so I'll just say I was typing 200 wpm in middle school)). I also only included a small proper subset of what I could've (both bars and meaning), even for "Easy" or "Intermediate" or beyond. If you could let me know which one, I'd appreciate it, as I don't want to be annoying people.

Just for context, if you didn’t know, the beginning part where he is quoting “I was gonna go easy on you not to hurt your feelings… but if he’s as bananas as you say, we’re in trouble, big trouble.” Is actually based on something that happened on November 22nd, 1987. The background, clothing, and sunglasses Eminem is wearing is what the assailant was wearing during the broadcast interruption. Someone wearing a Max Headroom mask (a fictional British tv character), hacked two Chicago, Illinois TV stations during a live broadcast… I believe it was a Chicago Bears football game. The very beginning lyrics are what was said during one of the hacks that took place. The anonymous person that hacked the station, has never been caught.

It annoyed me for the longest time that so many people thought he was spouting gibberish with the suuma duuma part. You should bring your husband into your reactions, he sounds like an eminem fan and no offence but its clear quite a lot of stuff goes over your head. You gotta do more old school em. “White america”, “drug ballad”, “criminal”, “amityville “, “under the influence “, “forgot about Dre “ etc etc. I’m telling you that you have only just begun diving into the rabbit hole

Eminem to me is perfectly understandable, even when he's going super fast. He goes even faster on Godzilla and I caught every single bar, and typically, other fast rappers just sound garbled to me, the ones I've heard. That's just one reason why Eminem is the unquestioned GOAT in my opinion. His flow, lyricism, uses of double and triple meanings, clarity, etc, out of this world. He's in a different league to everyone else imo.

Yep most of them are just mumble rappers, Em can't stand them either. I don't catch every bar, but I catch alot of them

Would love to see your reaction to: Going Through Changes. Song hits super hard over the loss of Proof, but mirrors much of what i went through through the loss of my best friend as well.

If you want to be able to rap like that you need to print out lyric sheets and then go through the song bit by bit until you learn it all the way through . It works trust me. Then you gotta do it with other speed rappers as well, techn9ne is another good one to get into to learn those complex rhyme schemes. In fact you should just start reacting to tech n9ne in general on this channel lol dudes first 4 albums are goated

Please consider having the lyrics up as well as the video when doing Em reactions. It will help catching more bars, I'm listening to him for 20 years and still catch new stuff using the lyrics. Nice reactions 👍🇮🇪
