I agree with this completely. He has been consistently awesome skill-wise. He has just changed his style over the years as the music changes and his experiences changed. I think part of why many (not all of course) people prefer his older stuff is nostalgia. A lot of the people saying that Em used to be better are millennials, people who were teens or younger when Em first came on the scene. And the music we listen to and love as teenagers resonates differently and feels more special. I am about Em's age so I was already a grown man when Em became popular. I was in the Army and sitting in the barracks when I first heard Em rap. Em is one of my favorite rappers and hands down my favorite lyricist. But all my favorite rap SONGS of all time are songs I fell in love with as a teenager, like "Nothin' But A G Thang" and "California Love". Lyrically, Em raps circles around those songs just about every time he raps. But I also know that there is virtually no way that Em, or any rapper, will ever record a song that hits me in the sweet spot the way those songs from my teen years do. So I can just imagine the impact that Eminem had on listeners who actually grew up listening to him during those formative years. Even if Em's rapping has IMPROVED, it is still going to be next to impossible for Em to convince many of his younger fans of that. And again, I'm not saying all millenial Em fans feel that way or that all my fellow old heads feel the same as me. But generally speaking I think there is something to my theory.
@cjclark61534 жыл бұрын
Bob M respect. I definitely think nostalgia plays a part. Also I think ppl just resonate with high em. I was 8 when I heard em for the first time. (“If I’m the music that y’all grew up on I’m responsible for you retarded fools”)I’ve been a fan for a long time but I swear mmlp2, revival, kamikaze, and mtbmb are so fire. Kamikaze brought out the Stan in me big time and I know I probably annoyed the piss out of any friends that talk music to me. But I was still a fan from way back and I’ve gone back through the catalog many times but the way he plays with words and flows now days is second to none. This freestyle I remember playing on repeat when I was in hs. Even though the subjects are crazy, he makes it work and is truly funny.

Nahh EM is much more better now than before.. his Shady XV Cxvpher freestyle is more lyrical than this and alot of times people just say that this is better is just because of nostalgia if EM drops this kinda freestyle now people gonna be like nahh this aint lyrical enough. Nah, I'm with Scru on this. People enter the scene, perfect their craft, enter their prime and then fall off. Just the natural course of things. This Em was untouchable. Em 3 years ago is not the same. His lyrical stuff (i.e. Rap God) just doesn't hit the same (nothing to do with Nostalgia, I'm young and did not listen to any of Em's stuff in order)

This 1st time I heard scru articulate why he likes old em better. His flow rides the beat and get into pockets vs better lyricism. I'll agree with that it was most noticiable on mmlp vs mmlp2. MMLP2 beats were subpar but lyrics were insane but way he flows on mmlp 1 and eminem show and even slim shady lp. Old em sound so much better even if lyrics arent close to what he does now.

12:48 You bring-up falling in pockets. Right after, you might watch how he rockses. He drives his body to hit marks and cut and weave like fish hook or Tokyo Drift with a locked mic. Like the juke of a running-back to avoid a sack...but more of a forward attack.-Ernie Moore Jr. I think a good singer might control-direct air with body sized muscular shifts, changing their bodies to work the words And Eminem kinda looks like an orchestra director-conductor; with a shifting structure to catch or bounce or hit the edge of the word, to drive his breathing and finding his timing to direct what and when it is heard within his rhyming or the rhyme scheme.-Ernie Moore Jr.
