EL-P deserves more respect in the scene. The man is a prolific hip hop producer, beat maker, and writer. He's put in just as much work as Eminem when it comes to rap and hip hop just hasn't seen the glory Em has. But I think you make some valid points... it's sad/weird to watch Eminem go this way...his last few albums, with the exception of maybe Marshall Mathers LP 2, have felt completely stagnant, not something I want to see from the dude who literally wrote the lyrics "til the day that I drop you'll never say I'm not killing em, cause when I am not then Imma stop pennin' them."

Eminem doesnt rap about being black and having a black life cause he aint black. Well , i think Eminem has concious that this album is far from being a masterpiece like a lot of his fans thinks , this album is just a full fanservice for the majority part of his public , it's a weird comparision but i felt the same feeling when i was going to watch "dumb and dumber 2" like ,i think the 1st movie was a great comedy movie and i laughts till today , then they made the same thing on 2 just to please the public but in a lazy and poor way(just like tdoss). Said that , i think the only way Em could evolve his sound was being him truly, maybe make some music about some philosofic shit instead of so much personal things , i like how much he cares for about his kids and all that but honestly i'm tired of the sad songs about Hailey lol she'll be fine dude , and unfortunaly i think the big reason that don't allow him to be more creative is his own public that cheer and celebrate every single shit he makes , he can't get a real opinion.

Is it even successful as a concept album though? There are like six tracks following the part where Slim Shady dies, so the story isn't particularly cohesive. Slim Shady is an alter ego, the lyrics are exaggerated but a lot of the time they come from what Eminem actually thinks and believes. It's not like a character that's nothing like who he is as a person. In TDOSS it's impossible to tell if some of the offensive bars are literally just there for the sake of shock value or if he actually believes that stuff even a little bit. He's in his fifties now so it makes sense that he can't tap into the persona in the way he used to. He was younger, angry, and had issues. People who were asking for a return to Slim Shady were already fans and were asking for music that sounds like it could have been released early in his career. I don't think enough thought was put into the concept of the concept album for it to really justify itself. The one track that stands out to me from his recent albums is Darkness. It's about a serious topic, and there's an entire double meaning to the words. So I think he could have it in him to put out something worthwhile if he was to just push himself more. He just seems to be too self conscious to do that. He could experiment more, get out of his comfort zone... But he doesn't seem able. I thought Houdini was straightforward nostalgia bait but so many people were loving it. The more stuff he puts out that's retreading stuff he's already done the more he's watering down his reputation. More and more.

Brotha Lynch Hung and CBO were two pioneers of horror core. Though they didn't consider it a genre. It wasn't called that. Brotha Lynch called his style ripgut. Horror core tried to adopt him into the style he created. He's still ripgut. It didn't become a genre or a defined term really until more outsiders came into the game.

I think Eminem is not funny at all tbh, and I could never put my finger on it, I always just wrote it off to being cringe. But I'm 33 now, and I realize that this style of humor is cringe because it's rooted in a deep deep entitlement... He thinks he should just be able to say WHATEVER, and that started as his brand and it wound him up in a place where he forgot how to say stuff that matters to anyone. And he's so angry because his music just will never matter again and he can't figure out why.

Funny enough, I think El-P has had the career Eminem always wanted. I was listening to the Marshall Mathers LP recently (boy did that age poorly), and now have a working theory that that whole album is Eminem trying to cancel himself. Really all Em ever wanted was to be accepted by the hip-hop community, but instead he got put on teeny bop magazines and lumped in with Limp Bizkit. He essentially says it himself throughout the record. Problem is, the money was just too good for him to say no, and I think that made him bitter. El-P, on the other hand, has never had the brand recognition that Eminem has, but he's also never had problems with authenticity. He's got nothing to prove... The man is an underground legend, and he's made almost nothing but classic albums.

He definitely benefited from that final shift in media. Great video!

Just a friendly comment, in my opinion, I don’t feel like you really explained the concept of diminishing returns well and/or really related it to how it’a actually applied to Eminem here. “Diminishing returns” overall is a great concept for everyone to know but it definitely could have been expanded on. To used the well idea, finishing returns would mean every time you put the bucket down and pull out water, with each lowering and pulling back up you get a little less water than the last time because the well is emptying….and this is just a guess but I think you mean this applies to Eminem still using the same flows and concepts in his songs and each time he does that his fans/audience respond slightly less enthusiastically because basically the well is drying up. 💁♀️ just a way your video could possibly connect more or illustrate your point that em keeps going back to the same “well”. Overall, thank you for the video

sooo...basically everything i said involving dredging sludge from the bottom
@christinathein9513 ай бұрын
@@FatCharlie215 is there sludge at the bottom of a well? And how is that “diminishing returns”, sludge, if at bottom, would be more like hitting rock bottom and there’s nothing left in the well at all whereas diminishing returns means you’re still getting some water out of the well but just less and less every time. So like Eminem is keeps using the same lyrics/lyricism, same flow and same technique and that’s why he isn’t as popular as he used to be because all those things he was praised for in the past the audience is basically sick of??? I apologize if this video was supposed to be purely entertainment, I was just hoping to get a better understanding of like what his “BS” is here. I do completely understand how you see him as cringe but just not sure on that other parts. 🙂 thank you for your previous response!

whether punching down or punching up, he was pushing the envelope in a way which couldn't be denied from a talent pov. he showed he still has the talent but he isn't sure what to do now. people hated revival and i get it, it sounds like shit. the content is a bit preachy. if he wanted to bring slim shady back, he really should have taken the sentiments of revival and his last few years of statements and just delivered it in the most abrasive, offensive way possible. flip the preachiness of revival into the classic poo-slinging, edgy energy shit that redefined the cultural battle lines. the album he just put out actually blurs the lines in some ways even if that wasn't his expressed intention. he has portrayed slim shady as like a weapon of sorts, given he still has shit to say, he should have just channeled that energy in the direction of the people he really wants to go after and really challenge people to think if it's acceptable to be that aggressive towards people who probably deserve it

I actually have always preferred the Eminem/Marshall tracks. Kamikaze was his best album IMO. MTBMB had some very good tracks. Eminem recently has shown he does better when there's someone to push him. I dont know why youre taking slims wordss and anrics at face value. Eminem doesn't even believe most of the stuff that slim said. This concept deals with dichotomy of Ems audience expecating him to return to the old him and the other expecting him to evolve. The story does this through franing Em as the protagonist and slim as the antagonist. Their conflict is really tye centerpiece, those jokes you mentioned are just plot devices.

My problem with current day Eminem is that he isn't that he's not saying anything new, but that hes not saying anything at all. Saying "my transgenders cat siamese“ isn't saying anything about transgenderism. It isn't pro or anti. It's not pointing out any irony in the position of those who are pro or anti. It's likewise with Kyle Rittenhouse. It's as if his writing can be boiled down to 1. Think of some event or topic that is relevant in the cultural zeitgeist ie. Transgender 2. Come up with as many words or combinations or words that rhyme with that word or idea 3. Write sentences with as many of those words and syllables per minute as is humanly possible, accounting for flow. 4. Rap it on a beat, throw in references to being cancelled whilst never facing any real threat of being cancelled for what you say. Simply saying the word "transgender" or "rape" or "fuck Trump" isn't edgy. Oooh fuck trump? He's orange you say? I haven't heard every single person in the world saying that for nearly ten years now, so edgy! Just one example from his early work from the top of my head where he's actually saying something is from "who knew" “So who’s bringin’ the guns in this country? I couldn’t sneak a plastic pellet gun through customs over in London. And last week I seen this Schwarzenegger movie where he's shootin' all sorts of these motherfuckers with an Uzi. I sees three little kids up in the front row screaming "Go!" with their 17-year-old uncle. I'm like, guidance?! Ain't they got the same moms and dads who got mad when I asked if they liked violence?” He doesn't say things like that anymore.

1:35 my mom didnt find it appropriate having the n word being used when we'd play Tupac in the care. She didnt mind the content, the beats, but she was very sensitive about the use of that word, because she was called N lover and beat up several times by both sides who didnt like her being in the ghetto and dating.

Too old? Is there an age limit? Everyone ages, this argument is ridiculous

Obviously he means that Eminem hasn't artistically evolved or matured as his audience gets more and more over it all.
@tangerinelziii16 күн бұрын
@@jovanreid6782 maybe. But I think his skills have improved with age. In my opinion, he consistently works with younger artists which shows me he is still discovering. Also, I'm 48, I don't love age comments 😉 But I can see your perspective.

I don't agree with the "doubling down on shitty material instead of growing as a person". If that was true, than how do you explain: 'Rock Bottom', 'Guilty Conscious', 'Stan', 'The Way I Am', 'Marshall Mathers', 'Cleaning Out My Closet', 'Say Goodbye To Hollywood', ect., basically every album has at least 2 songs on introspection/reflection.
@STARK01813 ай бұрын
Revival wasnt Em trying to be shady at all. Revival was actually Eminem trying to go in a new direction and express his geniune views in the world. I dont see how his relevance is dwindling. The guys old and newer music still breaks records on streaming platforms and sales. He still sells out stadiums when he performs worldwide. He knocked taylor swift off the number one album after her 12 week run. People have been talking about this album alot. That doesn't strike me as dwindling relevance.
