I have lived here since I was born back in 1972, it went downhill as lots of factories got closed in the 80s. A lot of rough northerners were allowed in to council properties, instead of dealing with them in their towns, council probably got a back hander. Police numbers cut. Internet shopping killed a lot of the shops. I also blame the government for allowing alcopops to be sold in the shops, which no doubt was the movement years ago that got more youngsters now going on heavy drinking binges, instead of looking at themselves and wanting to improve themselves. If you allow rough people into any town, they more than likely will bring their children up rough and then about 70% will do the same as their parents.

I noticed a surprising number of northern accented people in Lowestoft too. Very sad to see the state of it now.

It's on critical life support now. So sad to witness its decline in recen t years. We can't get any government funding either. We still have a great beach and sea front though 😊

My family had a fishing fleet back in the day , I had a great great great grandfather called Boiler catchpole ... I never lived in lowestoft, I lived in and still do live in gorleston, but would often visit as a child in the 80s and early 90s I remember some nice boozers in the late 90s . I saw the hearts of oak appear in this video. Great pub , a propper pub , not like these crappy wetherspoons we have now . They use to have a Bar billiards machine. I remember the mushroom shaped things you had to hit I think can't quite remember now . Thanks for sharing

Joined the RAF from Lowestoft in 1970, came back infrequently during the eighties so my parents could see the kids, it still seemed a decent place. in 87 moved to Wiltshire then RAF Germany, Retuned to lowestoft in 1993, I could not believe the negative change in the town in six years. Had intended to live in Lowestoft when I left RAF but moved to Norwich instead. Still visit to see my mum but nothing else brings me back to the town I grew up in

My Nan had a cottage in Kesingland. We came to Lowestoft beach every day in the summer during 70s and 80s. The shops were great to. Went back about 20 years ago and was really disappointing and sad. Most town centres are rubbish now to be fair

I remember those damn Midi-Buses I think they called ‘em. They were damn well everywhere in Lowestoft and GY had The Banana Buses. I hated the things!

@@Da1Dez OK, Aldous and his chums, his party, historically and today, happy now? Ever been to Lowestoft lately? Whose bright idea was it to greenlight a massive cheap pub right at the start of the high street, packed full of problem drinkers by lunchtime? He's been there over ten years, the town looks like an absolute dogs breakfast, the schools are failing, and no decent person wants to live and work there, end of. Amusingly, even his affluent powerbase of Halesworth now looks all hollowed out and rundown, sign of the times eh? Keep monitoring your bank account for those Rich Rishi handouts...

Best thing I ever done move away from Lowestoft still miss oulton broad and the beach tho only reason I go back is to visit family and friends the place has gone right down hill these days not a nice place to bring your kids up anymore it’s a shame there’s just nothing there work wise you have to head into the city to have any chance of a hand decent life
