FYI, C-Check isn't the largest maintenance check. It's only done on A380 because it's still a newer plane model. Once it becomes quite old, or heavily damaged, a D-Check is done, which is the heaviest and most comprehensive check. I did this first hand on a maintenance job training in a Lufthansa Maintenance base. My department did all the panels of the inside of a Qantas A380, between installation, and removal. Usual C-Check of an A380 can last up to 2 weeks, to even a month or so.

I was reading about Airbus's uncertainty over the future of the A380 - personally think that Boeing will jump at the chance to fill the void, so why Airbus want to create a new market for its competitor god only knows. If I were Airbus I'd take a gamble and update, turn it into the plane it promised to be. As the wings were future designed for a stretched version (and suffer a 5% efficiency loss on the current version) I'd go for an ever so slight stretch (2-4 rows extra) to improve costs per seat. Update the aerodynamics and engines, and as we are 10 yrs on there will be new ways to save weight. Avoid trying to squeeze the mooted extra economy seat in each row downstairs, too tight. But upstairs there is room for 3x3x3 as the aisles are bigger(maybe some carriers do this already). As a designer this is just my opinion

Yes you are right, the D check is the biggest maintenance possible on an airplane, and in this given case, @Emirates said that C is the biggest on any airplane. so they are lying obviously, or they are uneducated, which is pretty scary since they are an airplane company.

This wasn’t the full inspection though, where they pretty much tear down the whole plane looking for fatigue on the body of the plane, and replace old worn out parts with new. I think it’s a check that has to be made every 10-15 years. I can see that happening with the Airbus A380’s but not other airlines as they want to get rid of their A380’s like a bad taste in their mouths. One thing though, why did Emirates decide to retire only the A6-EDB and not the A6-EDA ?? A6-EDB still has a lot of life left.

Interested no D check on this bird? I didn't see any airframe inspection going on or anything? Also British Airways released a 60 minute video on them doing a full D check on a 747-400 a while back. Looked more thorough and we learned a lot about the plane.
