Regarding golf, because of the locations of the courses, it's not as simple as replace the golf course with affordable apartment complexes, because there are several issues in the way. 1) a lot of golf courses are on flood plains, and any apartments built there would face frequent flooding. 2) golf courses in expensive areas will only become expensive houses. And 3) the courses in reasonable neighborhoods would likely have any high density development rejected by the surrounding neighborhoods, so it would at best be a middle-income neighborhood. It could still be possible to keep the golf courses, but rework how they're managed to significantly reduce water usage, but even then, most are watered with reclaimed water rather than drinking water, so the stats on "golf courses use massive amounts of water" aren't really telling the whole story, because they generally aren't competing with our water supplies. I'm all for fighting against waste, but I don't think this is the fight that would result in the highest value change. Now I guess it's my turn to get flamed.
