Even if most people criticise Gwyneth Paltrow, for me she is perfect as Emma! Her looks and acting very much match Emma from the book for me. And Jeremy Northam is the best actor for the role of Mr. Knightley. He is masculine, handsome and played a true gentleman. He is brilliant !

I have enjoyed this adaptation so far but why change the dialogue in this scene? "Marry me?" I can't imagine any heroes in Jane Austen books would make a proposal like that. "Tell me then have I no chance of ever succeeding ? (...) My dearest Emma, for the dearest you will always be, whatever the event of this hour's conversation, my dearest, most beloved Emma, tell me at once. Say No if it is to be said (...) I cannot make speeches, Emma. If I loved you less I might be able to talk about it more"

I have such mixed feelings about this because in one hand, I love the speech in the book and I would have loved to hear Jeremy give it. It still breaks my heart a little I didn’t get that. oh yes, those that DID manage to find a nice husband were indeed cherished- and they also had to live up to all sorts of expectations; others were forced into prostitution from poverty; farm wives worked day and night and looked it pretty soon; no woman could legally manage her own money; in England, men could file for divorce, but not women- the list goes on and there is absolutely no reason to glorify life for women in those times. Austen wrote fairy tales even by the standards of her own day, which is why she was so successful. I myself love her stuff and keep rereading, BTW .

There are 2 versions from the same year. There's Gwyneth Paltrow (Miramax version), the other has Kate Beckinsale (ITV version) as Emma. The latter (ITV version) is the most closest to the novel, in my opinion, and much better. I read the book a week ago (it took me 5 days, even though I had the 14-hour audiobook to help me get through it). I haven't yet seen the 2009 miniseries yet. I've already seen the 2020 version. It's the second place in my list of best to worst adaptations, with the Miramax version in last place. Of course, the Miramax version of Mr. Knightley (Jeremy Northam) is higher on my list of best to worst Mr. Knightleys. But Gwyneth's Emma is last place, for best to worst Emmas. Beckinsale is first place.
