Even if most people criticise Gwyneth Paltrow, for me she is perfect as Emma! Her looks and acting very much match Emma from the book for me. And Jeremy Northam is the best actor for the role of Mr. Knightley. He is masculine, handsome and played a true gentleman.He is brilliant !

I couldn't agree more. Gwyneth Paltrow was perfect as Emma, and the rest of the cast were equally good, surely a "dream cast." Plus, all of the other aspects: costumes, settings, music, etc., were all one could ever want.

I love this version of Emma. I like Paltrow in this and our Toni Colette was wonderful. Jeremy Northam is my favourite Mr.Knightly. Beautifully made, gorgeous soundtrack. It must have been interesting for Sophie Thompson and Phyllis Law playing mother and daughter ( Miss Bates and her mother )since they are such in real life!…and of course the other talented daughter the brilliant Emma Thompson. Emma Thompson was in a movie with mother too in Much Ado About Nothing. I do like the latest version of Emma with Anya Taylor Joy. A very talented cast as they are all really playing and singing themselves. The music at the end credits was composed by the actor who played Mr. Kightly in this version.

Always thought Harriet's character goes deeper than was developed in this. I was in Winchester, England and accidently stumbled into Jane Austin's grave at the cathedral - years before I ever knew how much her unrequited love stories would entertain me. I have enjoyed this adaptation so far but why change the dialogue in this scene? "Marry me?" I can't imagine any heroes in Jane Austen books would make a proposal like that. "Tell me then have I no chance of ever succeeding ? (...) My dearest Emma, for the dearest you will always be, whatever the event of this hour's conversation, my dearest, most beloved Emma, tell me at once. Say No if it is to be said (...) I cannot make speeches, Emma. If I loved you less I might be able to talk about it more"
@thegnome73

The last, at least, is a direct quote from the book: "I cannot make speeches, Emma...If I loved you less, I might be able to talk about it more. But you know what I am. I have such mixed feelings about this because in one hand, I love the speech in the book and I would have loved to hear Jeremy give it. It still breaks my heart a little I didn’t get that. And yet...I am almost equally in love with the speech he gave here. Yes, it’s a little modernized but it’s beautiful in its own way. I appreciated the 2020 delivery of the speech up until the nosebleed/comedy approach.

oh yes, those that DID manage to find a nice husband were indeed cherished- and they also had to live up to all sorts of expectations; others were forced into prostitution from poverty; farm wives worked day and night and looked it pretty soon; no woman could legally manage her own money; in England, men could file for divorce, but not women- the list goes on and there is absolutely no reason to glorify life for women in those times. Austen wrote fairy tales even by the standards of her own day, which is why she was so successful. I myself love her stuff and keep rereading, BTW .

@@kyereCat Really? I must say, I prefer 1000 times to watch Gwyneth as Emma rather than Keira Knightley as Lizzy. I've watched Emma at least 20 times, but P&P with Knightley, I watched it once, and I never want to watch it again. The film was aweful and Knightley was allergy inducing for me

Best version of "Emma" and Northam is the best Mr. Knightley by far, but none of them understands the period's social norms. He walks quickly forward while she is hurrying after him?! How rude, this never happens in the novel and could never happen! They walk together, though in silence. The dialogue? Why change from the original perfect conversation? A kiss?! Totally inappropriate, could never happen!

Как мне нравится актриса, играющая роль Эммы, она вовсе не похожа на англичанку: такая живая, эмоциональная, все понятно, хотя я не знаю инглиш.Прекрасное произведение, прекрасная игра актеров спасибо

Rita Wing have you seen the 2009 bbc miniseries? i think it’s the best adaptation of emma, at least in terms of character. emma and mr. knightley feel like dear friends without being 90s rom com characters.

There are 2 versions from the same year. There's Gwyneth Paltrow (Miramax version), the other has Kate Beckinsale (ITV version) as Emma. The latter (ITV version) is the most closest to the novel, in my opinion, and much better. I read the book a week ago (it took me 5 days, even though I had the 14-hour audiobook to help me get through it). I haven't yet seen the 2009 miniseries yet. I've already seen the 2020 version. It's the second place in my list of best to worst adaptations, with the Miramax version in last place. Of course, the Miramax version of Mr. Knightley (Jeremy Northam) is higher on my list of best to worst Mr. Knightleys. But Gwyneth's Emma is last place, for best to worst Emmas. Beckinsale is first place.

Gwynneth Paltrow all wrong for this role. Overacts and her accent is false. Like Jeremy Northam though.
