@@grazieperdone4959 No, I actually meant Mr. Weston. Of course Mr. Knightley scolds her openly in the next scene. Mr. Weston Emma her in her place between the lines of the perfection metaphor: The two letters of the alphabet that stand for perfection = M + A (spells 'Emma'). Obviously that's absurd, all letters have the same value, but as a matter of self-image, they might consider themselves to carry a higher value (if letters had a mind of their own 😄). So, one way of reading this could be, Mr. Weston implies that Emma considers herself to be perfect, at least above average, and certainly better than the poor woman that "flawless" Emma just insulted in front of everyone else. He kinda points out that a snobbish person (like Emma = always the big fish in the small swamp) will eventually fall from a much higher horse - just like Emma does when she behaves so disrespectful and hurtful before she even realizes it.

Awkwaaaard! Guess mean girls have always existed. This was very subtle, but times were different. Miss Bates was a bit of a chatter box and often came across as an airhead, but a very sweet and kind person and Emma publicly humiliated her and hurt her feelings for pretty much no reason. She didn't deserve that. She's not as dumb as Emma thinks she is as Knightly pointed out. She knew what she meant. Of course from the look on Emma's face, she regretted saying it immediately. She embarrassed herself. It should be a lesson to all of us that we cannot take back hurtful words once they are out. All we can do is say we're sorry and ask for forgiveness. Knightly was good to call Emma out on it and it was alright. She apologized later in the movie and Miss Bates forgave her. All's well that ends well.

Yes, she was a little snobby but she had a good heart and you can see the stunned regret play out on her face the moment she said it. I think she did feel a little snooty and above Miss Bates & got caught up in the moment and feeling like she was funny but never in a way that meant harm toward her and it was clear she didn't mean to hurt her, she just didn't realize what she said was so mean until after she said it. When she cried in a later scene I cried with her :(. The whole scene was just kinda sad and it sucks to not only admit your wrong but to realize it, and Ngl I was kinda mad when her love interest yelled at her because she already saw her wrong and I personally would've rather someone who held my hand and helped me right my wrong instead of yell and treat me like I'm so pretentious. EDIT: I'm back 3 years later;) LOVE all the comments here! It took me a while to realize it, but I think while I inevitably agree about her love interest being right, I just think shame and regret are one of those feelings that make you feel like there is no way out. People always hate Emma for this, and they have a reasonable reason because what she did was cruel, but people act like, as the heroines of our own stories, we’ve never made a mistake that was out of line or said something that makes us carry shame inside of us for a long time. I relate to Emma in many ways. People forget that she is still a kid who is still growing herself. No matter how savvy she thinks she is

I'm glad even if she knew she was wrong that someone still pointed it out to her verbally...because I've seen people who did things they knew were wrong have a slight hint of regret about them later but then go on to do them again...there is a chance she may have said something in the future which really put all her friends off to the point where they might avoid her company. I think the only reason Knightley scolds her is because he loves her so much...and when we see people we love say mean things, it can hurt. Emma had her faults including her meddling nature but saying something hurtful wasn't really the norm for her, so when she said it, I think it shocked everyone including Knightley.

Mrs. Elton, for example, is someone vulgar and impetertinent, and just for that reason no one expects anything from her and they overlook her bad behavior, which has never get as nasty as emma's in this specific scene. That is why everyone feels so uncomfortable with how ordinary and unfairly cruel Emma was here. What Emma says may seem only a little rude, but in the context of the story it comes across as incredibly mean. @Blakiedoo Жыл бұрын
its hard because a lot of this scene has to do with context and subtle old english mannerisms but basically theyre playing a game where they each have to say 3 dull things. miss bates, the older brunette throughout the story is loud and talkative and not at all pretty or charismatic enough to make up for it so everyone strongly dislikes her, but shes so nice that shes generally tolerated. she made a self deprecating joke, saying it doesnt matter what she says, she’ll say 3 dull things no matter what (because shes so boring anyways) which everyone awkwardly laughs at, but emma who has throughout the story gotten more and more annoyed with miss bates, finally snaps (but in the proper english way) and says when has she ever stopped at 3 dull things, implying and agreeing with her that shes boring and dull. old english has a very weird and complicated way of doing back handed compliments, but in the context of this scene and with how agreeable emma was typically throughout the story, it was surprising of her to say something so rude for no reason. havent watched the movie or read the book in a long time so this is a very rough explanation but i hope this helps and its not too late !

Jane Fairfax has been secretly engaged to Frank Churchill for many months. He has not had the moral courage to tell his guardians, and he has put her in a bad position where she cannot make any commitments (to get a governess job, for instance, or to visit her friend in Ireland) but can't reveal why. He is also at this time of the book being completely manic and obnoxious, like he is trying to get a rise out of her by flirting outrageously with Emma and otherwise being indiscreet. Mr. Knightley even tells Emma he thinks Frank and Jane have some kind of romantic connection, so Frank isn't hiding it that well. Also, at this point in the book, everyone is grumpy and sick of each other, so tension has been building for days. Miss Bates and Mr. Weston are the only ones who don't feel the underlying annoyance of all the other characters.

They shouldn’t have changed the line from the book; Emma says “But you will be limited as to number - only three at once!” That sounds like a sort of general joke, unfortunately a tactless one. But to have Emma state “When have YOU ever stopped at three?” is more of a deliberate insult, and Emma did not intend to insult Miss Bates.
@CatholicGirl99Ай бұрын
I disagree, Emma definitely intended to insult her. She thinks herself much better and higher status than Ms Bates, but her tactless remark comes across as cruel and like punching down. The original line from the book is just as rude, just more clouded in politeness and passive aggressiveness.

I clicked on this thinking it was the Gwyneth Paltrow version and was sorely disappointed…

It seems that Emma was just playing off of the joke Ms Bates already made about herself...I understand she overstepped a little but I felt so bad for her in this scene. We've all said things we regret.

Quite the oversimplification of this scene's significance. Here it is so obviously hurtful in the moment - obviously to everyone - and that takes away the importance of Knightley telling her it was cruel. (I suspect they did that on purpose so it wouldn't be such a win for the patriarchy, or something...) That isn't right: Miss Bates is enough below Emma's status that she can be made the object of a little casual putdown *without* everyone making a big deal out of it. It's important that Mr. Knightley nonetheless does make a big deal out of it, AND that Emma, although she at first tries to laugh it off, knows inside that he's right. The story reveals the dangers that Emma is running, in terms of her character: she could give in to her weaker traits, could indulge her desire to comfortable in her abilities and her situation, could fail to "govern her fancy with understanding.'

poor Miss Bates she could not live in the Caribbean, if you are a chatty patty, people are quite frank and will tell you, especially your family. If you have a thick skin you would retort back, I know and so what. I am probably a Miss Bates and have been told for years about my mouth but guess what it is also my superpower, over the years I have learnt to turn it down but Miss Bates is sensitive here and should learn how to take your shame and make it into a funny situation. Turn your sad situation and flip it, but I guess different cultures and you need wit. Emma's problem was that she should have apologised immediately after noticing she hurt Miss Bates and everyone would have moved on.

@@joecliffe5939 Alright, I gave the video a second watch. I inadequately explained my position earlier, so let me be more verbose for the less observant. The excessive makeup makes them look far paler than how an ordinary human would look (even for white folks). Capeesh? I had originally thought it was the period clothing they're wearing as I couldn't quite put my finger on it originally. The excessively pale makeup in addition to the girl having her eyes set far apart makes her look like one of those big-eyes grey aliens.
