I watched a Ted Talks on kids and electronics when I was pregnant with my son six years ago. We moved houses when I was 8 months pregnant and I left every TV I owned at our old house and raised him without screens. He's always loved books and his vocabulary is excellent. Always placing huge emphasis on sleep hygiene so at 6 he already knows that his bedroom is his sleep sanctuary to reset and relax and he's always been a brilliant sleeper. I get lots of compliments on how bright and polite he is. Giving children of any age screens and access to the Internet is madness I can't believe how many people lazily give in to their kids often only researching the drawbacks when it's too late. Get them off their devices it truly is one of the best gifts you can give them. Couldn't agree with Matt and Emma more.

Mine watch tv and play games on their ipads, they are polite sleep around 10 hours a night and also love books and are doing great in school. But we do have strict screen times when it comes to the ipads. Don’t go thinking you have cracked parenting and other parents are just lazy, every kid is different

@Reader297 loads of parents most definitely are lazy I'm not just assuming and I didn't say I'd cracked parenting but I'm not doing too badly at all, thanks.

Thanks for sharing this, absolutely love matt and Emma, they are so down to earth. Even though my child is an adult now, I have a granddad and will definitely be watching this program. I am aware smart phones can be dangerous so will be interesting to see what they discover

I totally agree with this being brought to the forefront. Being addicted to phones, creates a multitude of problems- short term and long lasting.

Definitely a very needed discussion however, I do believe there is an important distinction between neurotypical kids/teens compared to neurodivergent ones. Social media, KZbin, the web ect shouldn’t all be swept with the same brush either. Especially for neurodiverse kids, they might have videos or tv shows they like to watch when going to sleep or helping them relax but could still benefit from time limits and maturity restrictions on social media sites.

Why use a mobile as a babysitter? There are other more practical ways besides a screen to help ALL CHILDREN.

This is just following our ban in Australia on mobiles for kids under 16..but people really need to watch the documentary “Surveilled” or the book by Ronan Farrow to see just how much your phone is tracking your every move.

I work in the IT security sector, and have nices and nephews. I would advise parents and guardians not to allow children to have access to smart devices such as phones and tablets untill they're at an emotionally mature age of 16+. Explicit material is avalible at their finger tips, and malicious intent from unsavoury people on social media is horrifically common. Let children be children.

So they can phone police or parent when they are attacked on school or public transport. So I can track where he is on Google maps so I can tell the police.

I don't think it's really phones that's the problem, its having unfiltered access to the internet and social media in particular isn't it really. My first phone was a brick phone that didn't connect to the internet, I only got my first smart phone when I was about 15, and didn't actually get on social media until 18, out of my own choice, i was an oddity amongst my generation! I think most kids actually probably need a phone when they start secondary school in order to keep in touch with parents and friends, but just being able to text and phone people is very different to being on social media

It IS to do with phones though, because they’re SMART phones. Literal computers in your pocket. You can access whatever you want, whenever you want. Phones are NOT like they used to be. That’s what they’re getting at here. Technology is changing at a rapid rate and there’s only so much parents can control.

What did people do before mobiles and the internet that’s the question that is always overlooked..I was born a long time before yesterday where having a phone was a luxury because you needed an operator to connect..I used a plug and cord switchboard at my first job…we all managed just fine….mobiles are addictive and have become a fad and trend that people feel the need they cannot do without.
@Veeve09019 сағат бұрын
And that’s the whole point, phones give people that access.

Blue light from phone degrades neuromelanin in the brain, the byproduct is a dopamine hit. That's why you keep scrolling and look at stuff your not even interested in. That's the addictive element. The light phone 2 is a dumb e ink phone, works fine for calling and texting

I just don’t get it …. why have parents allowed their children to have devices so early!!!! I live in Bavaria for 11 years until 2004. There the children were all playing out in nature, all walking to school, during kindergarten they spent the majority of their time by the river in the woodland, the majority of children’s toys were still wooden (no bells and whistles from flashing lights like on plastic toys). I did not know one child who went into child care outside school hours because the mothers were there for them. I moved over here with my 6 year old and had the shock of my life! Children in before and afternoon clubs, children not playing outside, babies and children glaring at screens for hours. Children here didn’t laugh really … not like the free spirit children in the Alps. This digital system is killing everybody!

We can only do so much and the government have to step in? If you can’t figure out how to control your kid’s internet access, don’t have them. All you have to do is cancel their contract, take their phone off them or put an adult content ban on. Harassment is always illegal. Already have a malicious communication law. Stop trying to get the state to raise your kids and diminish everyone’s freedoms in the process.
@Veeve09019 сағат бұрын
Having things made more difficult for kids to access these things cannot be a bad thing. Before the smoking ban came into place indoors you could have argued that people should give up smoking themselves. But the fact is, smoking has now reduced in the UK since then as a direct result.

Phones are not bad nor harmful. It’s how they are used that can be bad and harmful. When used well, phones are an incredible thing to have and use. The whole anti-phone thing is almost entirely based on bad ideas, bad science and misunderstandings.
