A Theatrical Dive into Emma Kok's 'Hallelujah'
As I watched Emma Kok's performance of 'Hallelujah', I was immediately struck by the sheer emotional depth she brought to each note. Her voice, rich and resonant, seemed to tell a story far beyond the lyrics. It reminded me of the Meisner Method of acting, where the emotional truth is paramount. Emma's rendition wasn't just a song; it was a narrative, a journey through highs and lows, each verse a chapter in a beautifully sung story.
Analyzing her performance from a director's perspective, I appreciated the subtleties in her expression and the way she used pauses and inflections. These are the tools of a seasoned performer, akin to an actor conveying a character's inner turmoil. The simplicity of the setting only amplified her voice, allowing the audience to focus solely on the emotional gravity of her performance.
In conclusion, Emma Kok's 'Hallelujah' is more than just a cover; it's a theatrical experience. Her ability to convey emotion through her voice, to tell a story, and to connect with the audience is reminiscent of the great performances I've studied and admired in theatre. This reaction video is a tribute to her talent and a nod to the art of storytelling in all its forms.

She love to sing because she is of the pumps and free, singing makes her forget for a moment who she is .living the moment of her performance as magic . And that is what she shows us,her moment of freedom and joy.😊

She is also a terrific role model - she is beautiful, obviously, but her dress and demeanor oozes elegance. She seems to favor those beautiful black dresses, but regardless of the specific gown every appearance seems to say "yes, I'm beautiful, but I'm not here to be beautiful. I just want to sing and maybe to inspire." Every girl around her should take note. She gets noticed because he has talent and class.

She has an enormous amount of natural talent, but listening to interviews, etc. she also has a great love and passion for singing and seeks out teachers and coaching. (i.e her flawless performance of Voila with Andre rieu and the JSO - she doesn't speak French and worked with a French teacher to learn it phonetically to perfection... with a lovely Dutch accent) I wonder if she even realizes what she's doing to add so much emotion to her singing?

I loved this expansive reaction. I am also sure the feeling Emma puts into her songs are not choreographed but are in her psychological DNA. I imagine Emma is an emotional pressure vessel as a consequence of her debilitating disease as well as the schoolyard bullying she experienced. It seems to me that her singing is a release valve for all that pent-up emotion. I am happy to be on the receiving end of Emma’s emotional pain relief. She is simply extraordinary.

I started intensive utubing during the Covid years, and have seen dozens if not hundreds, of Reactors/Coaches/Etc. You are certainly one of my 2 or 3 favourites. Thankyou for your approach. It is so refreshing to have Reactions : >1 without OMG, WOW, GOOSEBUMPS, etc >2 with appreciative and meaningful comments on the vocal aspects, >3 above all, with your ˋtotal stage performance‘ approach, analyzing physical movements, facial expressions, tiny changes in posture, etc which all together grip us and totally immerse us in the universe she is portraying. Listening to your analyses, one realizes why a live or filmed concert performance of a great singer is usually so much more satisfying and moving than when only heard on the radio. And one also realizes why so much ˋpopular´ music, fine for a few days/weeks, is soulless and doomed to oblivion once the carefully engineered ˋspectacular´ shock is over ( a load of curry sauce or ketchup will make almost anything eatable, but you quickly get sick of it if the basic ingredients are not good !)

Great reaction again to this little angel! Emma made this song her own, presenting a unique, delicate and emotional version. Only a true artist can do so. So sincere and authentic, so believable. I think she has great future ahead. And I am happy to have yet another female young artist to follow, which we are getting blessed with these times.

Thank you for that reaction, there's so much depth and understanding in there, and clearly Emma's got to you too, it's a pity that the mixing didn't let her vocal strength show fully, and it would have been so much better if they'd given her a head mount mike rather than her having to hold one, the Voila performance with Andre is a case in point, she's able to absolutely move freely, as there's no microphone to worry about, so much better. You clearly love her ability to go beyond just performing, she's able to get into the meaning, the depth of the song, and then live it on the stage, and I said something similar about a song she did over a year ago, her first single, LAAT MIJ EEN VLINDER ZIJN , let me be a butterfly , it was part of the notes I put up to Voila, Emma has had more to deal with in her 15 years than most of us have to deal with in a lifetime, and the effect on her has been massive, it's made her the person she is now, the depth and maturity is incredible. Over Christmas, she's put out effectively four different songs, and all four are either already over a million views on KZbin, or getting close, very different in terms of their genre, but all Emma at her finest. There's a duet with Helene Fischer of Voila, and it's changed a bit, the Vrijthof version that you reacted to, it's hard to realise that it was the first ever live performance of that very different version, she did it so well, Andre and the team made massive changes to the version that Emma had been singing, which was much closer to the Barbara Pravi version, there are versions on KZbin, and it's very evident that the new version with Andre gave her a lot more time and space to let the depth of emotions and feelings show, and they very much did. a number of performances with Andre during the summer has meant that Emma was comfortable with making changes, and with Helene, it was a very competent and powerful performance. kzbin.info/www/bejne/hpOboqCmmLR1r8U There's 2 videos with Andre, the first is 'All I want for Christmas', a short version, kzbin.info/www/bejne/rnSlgImtbLV4qLc there's some longer on KZbin, but most of them are audience recordings on phones, and the audio quality is usually pretty dire, and the video quality of some is also dire. The other Andre song is a sublime version of 'White Christmas', kzbin.info/www/bejne/kIuoqpt9Z8d4m68 Emma comes on and starts a capella, with no guidance note or introduction, you could hear a pin drop, she so captivates the audience, then Andre brings in the orchestra, sopranos and tenors, and Emma is there so clearly through it all. and then he winds it down so that she closes it out. If you want an example of how well she can absolutely belt out some of Hallelujah, she did a recording for a local TV channel, Emma, one microphone and a piano and player, no fancy dresses or anything like that, kzbin.info/www/bejne/eYSXi3atn9WemNk I linked several other performances in my earlier notes, and I don't know if you saw them or not, so I'll leave this here, and see what happens. I will close with a heartfelt plea to all the readers of this page. Please, if you can, join me in making a (regular) donation to Emma's foundation, gastrostars.nl They are a possible source of treatment or even a cure for people like Emma, it would be a tragedy if Emma had to stop singing because her gastroparesis had become worse, and her foundation may be the way that new treatment or a cure can be found, one of the key members of the team is a surgeon who worked at the Maastricht hospital, she also has gastroparesis herself, and she has been forced to give up her work at the hospital because of a deterioration of her health, so her focus now is the foundation, and with her knowledge, her input will be vital. It would be so good to hear that they have made some breakthrough that will enable Emma to be more able to do what she is so good at, it would mean that her other dream could also become reality, with all she's been through in her short life, it would be so good for her to be free of having to spend 22 hours a day connected to the pumps that are so essential for her survival. For Emma to be able to live free of them would truly be the dream come true.

@stevecgarry

@@TheBezaleel Certainly looks that way, I grabbed really good seats for the Dublin concert before we even knew Emma was going to be touring this year, so when it was announced a few days later that she's part of this year tour, I was more than happy, and since then, a second day for Dublin has been added to the tour, so clearly, there's lots of people thinking like me. Even better, I'd planned to book Maastricht for the summer of 2021 but of course, Covid well and truly blew that away, between most seats already booked because the 2020 series was cancelled, and the ongoing travel restrictions, it didn't happen, which was a shame, as it was both of our 70th birthdays, and our Golden Wedding anniversary, so when the Christmas shows were announced for 2024 just before this Christmas, I didn't waste any time, and we're going to Maastricht in December, good seats and the local hotel, I was well impressed with the videos on line of this recent Christmas concert, and, there's a already a third date been added to the schedule, so that's clearly going well too. The icing on the cake would be to get to meet Emma and her family, but somehow, I doubt that's going to be possible. I'm old enough to be Emma's grandfather, but there's something undefined about her, and it's way more than her singing, she can get into depths of both of us that no one else had reached in years, the first time we heard Voila was the local cinema in August, and on a wide screen, with cinema surround sound set to a fraction below pain levels, we didn't just hear that song, we FELT it, and I don't mind admitting, it went VERY deep into both of us, and when I did a bit more looking in to her when we came home, impressed doesn't begin to describe it, she is an incredible individual, I can't begin to imagine the trauma for her of dragging 2 feeding pumps around from almost before she was walking, that has to have been a torture that went so deep. it's no wonder that she is so expressive when she's free of them for the times when she's performing on stage, her family have done an incredible job of helping her come to terms with this awful illness, and now, for the next year, she's got the protection of Andre's wings over her, and will also have the love and support of Andre's extended family in the JSO, I can't think of a better place for her star to rise even higher and shine brightly, it's very clear that Andre is hugely impressed with her, the video of the presentation to her before Christmas went so deep, I hope that in time, we'll see a better video of that presentation, the deep love and emotion that was so evident in even the little bit we heard and saw tells me that she's in safe hands this year, which will be so good for her, the short video she put on facebook, she's already so excited to be doing this, and from the way she performed during the MECC concerts, we're in for some spectacular treats over this coming year, Andre is already finding ways to showcase her talents, and to gently push her to doing more than she'd imagined to be possible, and with the talents she has, she's rising to the challenge and delivering so beautifully, and MECC was only the beginning of that integration, I suspect and hope that we'll be seeing a lot of Emma beyond the end of the first year with Andre, I think she will be an exceptional addition to his team, if Christmas is anything to go by. I hope you get to enjoy your concert, I know we for sure will enjoy ours.

Thank you for your reaction. It does make me understand i bit more why i'm so touched by this girl every time I listen and watch her. I think it's the total sincerity and vulnerability of a young girl that Emma shows. Makes you want to put your arms around her and protect her from all the evil in this world. But she's a warrior and probably stronger than most of us. Maybe you want to check out her performance on a memorial celebration for fallen American soldiers during WO II. When she sings "Father", you can see her face how committed she is with the song. Even the sound guy can't keep hus eyes dry. kzbin.info/www/bejne/r2aYZXqpprJ7oJosi=vFcMDSwr6sy-dYo7

The great thing about Hallelujah is that it can be interpreted in a number of different ways depending on what the arranger and singer want to emphasize, which is why I get a kick out of different trolls who insist that this song is about the old testament, or rough sex, or broken relationships, or interior decoration, or gun control...yup it is. Cohen said he wrote more than 80 verses for the song, so I would imagine there are another dozen interpretations that are out there.

@ericzeichert511. Emma has a beautiful voice and it's a beautiful tune, but the words confuse to different Biblical accounts. Samson and Delilah and David and Bathsheba. This makes nonsense of the texts.

I love Emma Kok and have commented many times on various of her performances. On this occasion I simply want to take up your comments on the actual words. You may not be aware that it is based on two unrelated portions from the Bible. Samson and Delilah and king David and Bathsheba. They are mixed together to make the theme meaningless, but I love the music. As a powerful demonstration of Emma's passion see Strijder (Warrior), with English lyrics.

Okey, so her voice is undeniable 100% awesome. But at 15:45 she pulled a tiny Celine Dion in. Sooooo beautiful. Though Emma is an entity on itself, and for me hard to compare with others, I must say that she does transfers feelings like Lara Fabian does. But, and also not to compare with the person Celine Dion, het voice is of the same quality. Celine Dion used that moment as in 15:45 of this song in one of her songs (Fly) at the end. And it sounds sooo mesmerising. Unbelievable... Thanks for your professional input. Nice to hear and watch. 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻🌷
