Classically trained as a child, Emma Lohan broadened her musical horizons by hitchhiking across West Africa to study polyrhythms and community music before recording her critically acclaimed debut album 'Black Atlantic'.
Although known for dreamy and melodic folk pop, reminiscent of Karen Dalton, Oumou Sangaré and Joanna Newsom, Emma has since embraced a new sound leaning towards the improvisational and experimental.
Based in Mallorca, Emma began work on a new album during the severe lockdown measures of 2020. The result is an improvised symphony performed in four sections called ‘How I went from hipster folk to hardcore porn in one click a.k.a. The Fish and Bird Symphony’.
We are delighted to showcase her new work through The Booley Sessions and were blown away by this performance by the very talented Emma Lohan.

The Booley Sessions are a series of short concert films curated and produced by The Black Gate in a stunning new space on Eglington Street in Galway city.
We are delighted to showcase the music of twelve exceptional Galway artists and are especially grateful to our neighbours at Booley for allowing us to record in their beautiful loft. At a time when the live music industry faces yet another deeply challenging period of restrictions and uncertainty, we hope that these concerts can provide a little bit of comfort and joy to you all.
Happy Christmas from everyone at The Black Gate 🎄
