When I cruise I USUALLY don't worry about seasickness. I'm quite a travel sick person, I get sick in buses, cars, ferries, you name it, but usually, on cruise ships I'm fine.
On this cruise though, I wasn't. I was miserable.
There are a number of things that contributed to me feeling so unwell on this cruise and I learnt a lot from this experience. Do you get seasick? Let me know in the comments.

I also suffer from motion sickness. It ranges from non- issue to heaving events. Inside cabins can be OK. Here are some coping tips: 1. Don't look straight down the side of the ship at churning water. Especially when leaving the dock or near the shore. 2. Think carefully about using tenders or going on a small ship coastal cruise. They don't have stabilizers and move a lot. 3. Avoid caffeinated drinks like coffee & colas. However, flat cola syrup can help. 4. Don't let your stomach get completely empty but don't over stuff it either. As well as plain bread, soda crackers can help. 5. Get out on deck. Look off into horizon. Stay away from smokers. (Don't do this if waves are high.) 6. Take ginger capsules or eat candied ginger slowly. Ginger ale can help if you drink it slowly. You can also buy ginger syrup or make it yourself. Put it in a glass of cool water and drink it slowly. Don't use ice water. 7. Don't drink a lot of alcohol. Depending on how sick you are feeling you might be able to tolerate 1 or 2 drinks. Do not gulp them down, even beer. 8. Avoid bow locations, if possible. 9. If ship is crossing over Gulf Stream take care. Even if weather is calm, it can cause sea sickness. North Atlantic crossings are notorious for causing seasickness. Take pills or get patch (prescription required in US) and wear it. If you suffer from motion sickness, the bigger the ship the better. Also, do not expect to get sick. You can talk yourself into getting seasick. If you get seriously ill, see the medical staff. You might be suffering from an infectious disease. Remember that everyone is different! Some actually enjoy rough weather and have a blast during it.

@@EmmaCruises My poor little Whippet gets car sick..Always with the same friend! I think he drives in a swinging way, BUT... I was recommended Stugeron, just a 3rd of a tablet really works for her. Without Stugeron, we had driven just 3 miles, and I noticed she wasn't looking well, and she'd done a big ''yoK'' on the back seat...I went to clean it up, and oops, she'd done another. Poor girl. Luckily friend uses a tarp on the back seat. Stugeron absolutely prevents her vomiting. Personally, I find it needs to be taken well before I feel sick, but I had to cross the Irish Sea twice in one day, and used Transderm Scōp, and like you, it was amazing not to feel queasy or giddy ! These meds work if used correctly.

I have been cruising for 45 years (since a teenager) and as a younger person I was very sensitive to movement. Be it a ferry or a large ship, I would quickly be afflicted by seasickness. In 2009 I was diagnosed with tinnitus (ringing in the ear) which is largely untreatable - I got on with life. My next cruise that same year I travelled on Pacific Sun (Ex Carnival Jubilee) in very rough weather. To my amazement, shock and first time in my cruising life, I was NOT seasick. In fact my Dad, who never got seasick, was very "green" and in bed for two days. Me?.... I was out and about, in the pool, eating everything in sight, riding the waves and felt totally liberated! I have never experienced seasickness again. I no longer even pack the Dramamine for ocean travel and have crossed the Pacific (USA to Aust.) four times. I wish I could explain this, but its a true story - in a way I am grateful for tinnitus. In actual fact, I have since gained my in-shore skippers cert. and able to sail yachts in all weather. Go figure! Long story short - seasickness may not be a life-long affliction 🙂

There is another reason a balcony cabin would help. Your eyes and your inner ear will agree. My worst bout with seasickness came on a rough day when I was sitting inside in a lounge and my ear was saying everything was moving but my eye said everything was still.

Old time advice. Once you've medicated if still feel sick, go to lowest spot in center bottom of ship. Lay stomach down, hopefully on a bed, put hand on floor & sleep. Inner ear works it out. So your floor bed choice was instinctively correct. Thanks for your honest & practical advice. Cheers!

The science behind feeling sea sickness is the difference between what your ears are feeling (the fluids adjusting to the listing of the ship), and what your eyes are interpreting, ie no movement even though you’re feeling it. So it’s no surprise the outside should help with the seasickness, as then your eyes are seeing the horizon/landscape moving up and down, concurrent with the changing fluids in your ears. It’s probably this that helps it more than the fresh air, even though the fresh air definitely does feel nice😂

I get DEATHLY seasick. My legs give out (literally) and end I up in puddles of vomit. I have been on 28 cruises. I always get the scopamine patch prescription for my cruises and wear it the entire time. I have NEVER gotten sick (yet). I was in 28 foot swells 15 years ago out of NYC - there was vomit on the walls/floor/handles etc. I was in the gym on the bike. the only drawback to the patch is that you cant drink alcohol and you get terrible dry mouth - also a little blurred vision (not Helen Keller intensity) for the first hour. I was close to getting sick right before covid and ended up putting a 2nd patch ( my DR said that was ok) and I was fine. We are going on a cruise in Jan 2022 - cannot wait. Thanks Emma - glad to see you are back to cruising !!!

I absolutely adore this video, definitely gonna send it to everyone who used to say my anxiety would cause my seasickness. For context, I’m an emetophobe (someone who’s afraid of vomiting) as well as someone who gets violently travel sick in even cars (quite a cruel combination I know). I literally have to wear sea sick bands in the front seat of my car because of how bad my nausea can get if I don’t. I’ve been on a couple cruises during my childhood and felt nauseous on almost every single one, but the nail in the coffin for me was getting food poisoning on a Disney cruise back in 2010. Never been on a boat since and I’m 100% ok with that to this day.

Some cruise crews say their least favorite ocean is crossing the Tasman Sea. Fortunately we have good sea legs as our crossing was along side a cyclone. The wind was blowing so hard it came under the balcony doors, so towels were put there to help. The motion was really good and we enjoyed the dining rooms being not real crowded and we sleep the best we ever have. When people complain about rough seas they probably hate us because we love it when it happens. The BEST location if you are motion sick (like my son) is to go to a nice all inclusive resort or Las Vegas.

Hey I checked into that medicine you get for your motion sickness treatment and just so us Americans know - unless we go to Europe, Asia or India you won't be able to buy this. I'm a Pharmacist & I'd never heard of this before so it peaked my curiosity. Like Antivert Rx or Bonine OTC (Meclazine), and Dramamine OTC (Dyminhydrinate) the Stugeron tablets are a type of antihistamine that is very good at drying the fluid out of a part of your inner ear. It's an incredibly small part of the body but it's certainly one of the most important!! When that fluid sloshes about then your brain literally can't figure out the spatial orientation of your body in a room. This can be so severe as to cause vertigo. Trust me you don't want any kind of motion sickness so if you think you might need the medication then you probably do!! One caveat - you probably shouldn't drink alcohol with any motion sickness medicine that comes from a pharmacy unless it's the homeopathic kind that has ginger as a main ingredient!! I'd wager that those folks you see fall asleep with their heads in their dessert or just literally fall over passed out on deck have combined the meds with alcohol. If you use the TransdermScope (Scopolamine patch) combining with alcohol could even be deadly!!

The advantage of cinazzarine over Dramamine is that it is much less sedating. If I take diphenhydramine for motion sickness, I'll end up sleeping for 36 hours and that's no way to enjoy your cruise. Also, take you seasickness tablets prophylactically - if you wait too long, they will not have the desired effect.
@christianoliver3572
@christianoliver3572 2 жыл бұрын
@@gdr38515 Yes you are correct about taking them before you have any symptoms. It will work much better. As far as taking diphenhydramine (Benadryl is the brand name here in the USA) I wouldn't recommend it for 2 reasons: It won't work anywhere near as good as other over the counter or prescription medicines at the dose necessary to have any effect on motion sickness (75 mg or 3 OTC tablets in the USA) and it causes marked sedation at that dose. The other ones available without a prescription are far less sedating but this can vary by individual and situation. For instance if you're 45 years old from say my home state of Texas and fly to a Mediterranean cruise then 2 hours before the sail away take some of these antihistamine medicines, you're not going to be awake for the first whole day of that cruise because of jet lag, loss of sleep,, and the drug itself. Especially if it's Benadryl. I think it's best to actually talk to your Doctor and Pharmacist about it especially if it's your first cruise!!
@christianoliver3572
@christianoliver3572 2 жыл бұрын
Really there are risks and benefits to any kind of medicine that you take for any reason. If you have concerns for whatever reason you should talk to some kind of healthcare professional. I mean a Doctor, Nurse, Pharmacist etc. Not the dude that smells like patchouli at Whole Foods!! Look if you have car sickness you are VERY likely to have seasickness. And it can sour you on cruising which is really sad when there are so many options for that not to happen. For me it's weird because I can go from Port Aransas, TX out to the oil derricks in the Gulf of Mexico 20-50 miles out to sea on very nice but relatively small pleasure craft type of boats and even sleep aboard for a week and never have motion sickness. I ALWAYS get seasick the second day of a crossing!! Not the first or third but the second!! It doesn't matter whether it's on Cunard or a repositioning cruise!! I even had to get THE SHOT once on the Queen Mary. And yes THE SHOT will mean you wake up tomorrow but whatever it is will fix you up for at least 10 days. My point is this - DON'T let seasickness put you off from cruising!!

I never get sea sick, rather instead land sickness after being on a ship at sea. The land sickness can last up to two weeks after a cruise. I have too much fluid in my ears all the time due to liquid ear wax (hereditary). I have no idea if this helps or hinder in not having sea sickness per say.

I remember the "tannoy." In fact, I noticed this past week that the speakers in our radio station office are Tannoy brand, imported from the UK. :) As for wardrobe vs. closet, let's face it: "The Lion, the Witch and the Closet" just doesn't sound anywhere near as good! I've never been truly seasick on a cruise, but I've felt the ship moving around quite a bit -- once when we were heading into swells from a departing hurricane (basically they rocked us to sleep), and once when we were in the southern part of the same storm that put Anthem of the Seas on her side for several hours. The pilot-boat looked like a tiny dinghy bouncing on the waves when they came out of Port Canaveral to meet us. :o

I do expedition cruising (ships no more than 125 passengers) and storms can be really hard on these small ships. As others say below, motion sickness is an eye/ear disconnect. In rough storms I lie down and close my eyes and then listen to music or sleep. With your eyes closed, your body just has to deal with the inner ear motion - definitely helps.

We were going back to NYC from North Eastern Canada and experienced the roughest seas we ever had and nothing as bad since then. About 3/4 of second seating for dinner never made it. It was so bad, if the ship sank it have not have bothered me, that is how sick I got. Since then, many many cruise later, never had an issue. I take something before the cruise which seems to help with the sea sickness. I think it is called Bonine which really helps.

I am a superstar at motion sickness. I was the first person to throw up on a ferry from Athens to Patmos. Thank you for sharing your medicine brand. We don't have that exact brand in the US, but I can hopefully buy something here with the same active ingredient. I'm taking my 1st cruise in June along the coast of Norway. This was a very helpful video.

I was on a Transatlantic crossing on the Queen Mary 2 years ago when the bottles of liquor in the Commodore Bar fell on the floor because it was so rough. You could see the spray from the waves go over the bridge. My husband loved it.

I will never forget a night ferry crossing from Belfast to Liverpool many years back. It was in a storm. Even the crew was sick. Toilets had lines of people being either sick into the toilet or the washbasin. The decks had lines of people being sick over the rail. Was travelling with my sister, who 'never got sick'. Came across her almost green in the face in the rest room. We didn't have a cabin booked, but a lot of people just lay down on the floor of the lounge. That helped a lot. If you aren't vertical and your eyes are closed it helps. And in the morning, it was a miracle recovery all round.

I know what that feels like, I’m from Belfast & use to do the ferry to Scotland which only took 2 hours but it felt like forever but from Belfast to Liverpool would be hell for me, that’s the Irish Sea for you i guess!

All very solid tips. As a first time cruiser i'm going for a balcony. I don't want to risk my vacation and if i'm stuck in a cabin with seasickness at least i'll have some fresh air. I'm still bringing the pills and my good friend had wonderful luck with the seabands so i'll be bringing those too.

Great advice. All true. I watched a television program on a formal study of the effects of ginger on motion sickness, and it definitely reduces the symptoms. Altoids brand ginger mints are a nice option but I bring candied ginger on a cruise to enjoy and prevent motion effects. Also, for those with access to CostCo (mostly in USA), the pharmacy sells Travel Sickness Pills as a generic item. 100 pills are only $4. Same ingredients as the name brands but a real bargain. Ask the pharmacist for a bottle as it's not placed on the shelves. Read the directions. I take a pill prior to boarding in the port while waiting to board. Then I take a pill per the directions until I forget about them. Usually this means that I've developed my sea legs and have become accustomed to the ships movements. Start taking the pills again during the cruise if you know the weather will change or you feel uneasy. I also experience "reverse motion sickness" for a few days after a cruise so I take a pill at least prior to disembarking. It's a funny feeling to experience the ship movement a few days after a cruise is over. I look at it as a reminder of the pleasant experience I had during the cruise 😁

On our only cruise (so far) we had what most of the crew described as "The roughest seas we've ever sailed in" - It was February, travelling to New Caledonia and Vanuatu from Melbourne, Australia, so starting in Bass Strait and the Tasman Sea (both known for rough seas) and heading north following the tail end of a cyclone. The first full day at sea was bad for my wife, but the Kwells were like magic, once they kicked in. Didn't stop us enjoying every minute of the trip, even when we she was feeling it.

Sorry that you get sea sick. I have only gotten sick maybe three times in my life. I was in a cruise to Africa once in the 70s and we got caught by a hurricane. The ship was really rolling but I didn't get sick. I rather enjoyed it actually. But, I have gotten sick enough to know how miserable it can be and it defiantly would ruin a trip if it didn't end.

I also tend to get motion sickness, and I was really dreading my first cruise for that reason - although I was so excited to be going on my first cruise. I heard somewhere that GREEN OLIVES are good to nibble on too. You can always get 2-3 of them from one of the bartenders, and you shouldn't really need more than that. The bartenders are a GREAT source of help when you need them! With the olives, just tiny nibbles, in between tiny sips of something carbonated - Ginger Ale is the best, but I also like Sprite and regular Coca-Cola. The key is not to drink too much liquid at one time. I also do better if I am up walking around, so one of the best things I did was find the promenade deck and do a couple of laps, not too fast, not too slow, taking deep breaths of the sea air. I had some of the prescription Scopolamine patches, but I never did use them. I'm not a big alcohol drinker, so that helped. I knew that I should stay well hydrated, but also knew not to drink too much of anything at once -- just tiny sips throughout the day, and crunch on ice when thirsty. Your strategy of turning your bedding in the other direction is brilliant!

My poor mother used to suffer seasickness. She'd actually have to focus on the horizon to stay level. She'd wrap up in a big cruise blanket and sit on a deck chair for hours. The crew kept ferrying her soup to help. Sweet people! BTW - the short hair cut as very cute!

Thanks Emma. GREAT VIDEO. My technique is to catch it early and hit it hard. Dramamine or gravol and sleep (No reading or TV) at the first hint. I also only do big ships which rock very little and room selection is key. I always carry enough sea sickness meds to last the whole cruise if needed. I can only imagine what they cost on the ship. You may get a few free ones from the front desk.

The complete randomness of when rough seas or car/train travel will make me ill or not is extremely frustrating. Sometimes I can be completely fine and other times I'm ill for several hours even after sitting on steady ground and heaving all there is to heave... Thankfully I'm usually the driver and usually only take a couple ferry trips a year!

I was getting "sick sick" from just listening to you talking about it. LOL Not sure if you actually got sick or just felt like it. I, on the other hand, went on a cruise in the North Sea where we ran into a cyclone and the ship was rocking and rolling. I was sick (actual heaving) for 3 solid days. I even lost weight because of it. I was a mess. We were supposed to go on another cruise (back to back) but we had to cancel the second one because I just couldn't put myself thru any of that, again. For the first time ever (and never again!) we were directly at the back of the ship and in an inside cabin. My hubby was fine throughout the ordeal, but I wasn't. Thanks for sharing your tips for helping with the seasickness. :-)

I bought some Qwells for my cruise just in case. I rarely get travel sick but you never know. Anyway I didn’t use them so they came back and got dumped in the medicine cabinet. Forgotten for two years until I felt suddenly queasy after my 2nd Pfizer jab. I grabbed one, probably out of date, but it fixed the problem and I was thankful I had them. My heart goes out to anyone who gets travel sick. It sounds awful.

We always carry sea bands and pills just in case. Sea bands are good if you put them on as soon as you think things might be getting bad. Smaller ships are worse than big ships although we had a bad day on a big MSC ship coming back from Hamburg in September - the sea was not rough but it was very windy which had the same effect. Having said that we have booked a small ship for a Christmas cruise next year - hoping for the best. One one occasion on the Magellan we had to go and lie down after the first course as we were feeling a bit green. After half an hour we sat up and noticed that it was not so bad as the ship had changed direction. We went back and finished our dinner and we were fine after that.

Having worked on a cruise ship, my hot tip is to avoid COFFEE if the weather is going to be rough. Always worked for me, even when we had to walk on the floor/wall/floor/other wall etc during the great storm of 1993. I forgot many years later on a short cruise and was very sick indeed.

Our first cruise was in the Bahamas between 2 hurricanes. On our way back to port, I had to literally time walking to the bathroom with waves and being able to grab something to keep my balance. I wasn't getting really sea sick from it, but getting off the boat everything kept moving and that made me so sick. You could also pick out the people at the airport who had just gotten off cruise ships because we all had that want to puke/everything is moving look.

I'm probably lucky in that I never seem to get seasick. I once went across the Bay of Biscay in about a Force 7 in a glorified ferry (Pride Of Bilbao) - there was a lot of seasickness going around, people had dragged mattresses into the central area and turned it into a sort of shanty town. I was in the lounge at the front enjoying the odd wave breaking over the bow and onto the windows.

The worse case of seasickness I had was being at the very front the ship with a port hole for a window filling up with water as the ship is crashing through the waves. Up to that time I was usually ok with even having a back ship facing balcony room on my first cruise and feeling perfectly fine. My lesson was, whatever cure you use for your seasickness, take it at the very first sign of feeling a bit off. Don't try to ride it out! I have personally taken ginger supplements to ensure the ginger is good quality and is absorbed quickly (with stronger alternatives as a backup).

Not quite cruising related; but once on an overnight ferry from Harwich to the Netherlands the weather was awful. One of my work colleagues bought a KitKat chocolate bar, unwrapped it - threw away the chocolate but kept the foil it had been wrapped in. He pulled a thread out of his jumper, screwed the foil into a ball around this, then walked the ship using his recently constructed contraption as a pendulum to find the point where there was the least movement. Once he found that point he sat down and remained there for the rest of the crossing. It was so rough they had to close duty free as all of the bottles were falling off the shelves - fun times!

My first cruise I got horribly seasick. One of our table mates recommended Sea Bands, which is a non-medicated way to combat seasickness. They worked beautifully for me. Seasickness pills make me very drowsy and I don't want to take them. I now take my Sea Bands and put them on as soon as I start to feel nauseated, and they work for me.

A wardrobe that includes drawers, as most of the cruise ship “closets” I’ve seen do, is called a “chifforobe” in my neck of the woods. Although, a chifforobe is properly a free-standing piece of furniture perhaps the cruise ship wardrobes more closely resemble chifforobes than closets?
