@nitrous47 possibly a little advanced but today's babies are advanced. Can your baby roll back over is the question...that's important. A baby can roll cause their head is weighted but it's really about rolling back due to avoiding sids

60 mins seems like a challenge. Since my 3 month old is very hungry when she wakes up and then if I wait for 30 mins, it’s almost time for her next feed, since she has quicker bowel movements. I am able to do 15 mins max on certain days.

Very good video, thanks for sharing this valuable info. However as a psychologist and teacher that does research in neuroscience I wouldn't recommend using flashy toys to "entertain" your baby. These kind of toys affect kids attention and concentration in the long run, creating addictions. Using any other toy that is not electronic would be better. Even just the mirror option is enough :)

Hi @James T I would recommend you start to pick your little one up when he is lying on his back, by rolling him slowly onto the side (make sure you go to both sides but maybe do it slightly more to the side he doesn't favour as much). This will help to switch on and strengthen those neck muscles. I show how you do this in this video at the 2 minute mark: kzbin.info/www/bejne/gF7HZKuCpNx8Zrc I would also recommend you watch this video because the tips in this video also help to strengthen the neck muscles: kzbin.info/www/bejne/l2Wqc4Jmq9l8atk I hope that helps!

i have introduced tummy time with my baby since she was two weeks old but she never like to do be on tummy even now when she is almost 4 months old. each time she cannot do more than 5 minutes. we have tried different props, different position (eg on leg, on pillow, football hold). Even a chest-to-chest she never like it because she just doesnt want to rest her head but keep tilting up her head with leg kicking and then she will get upset easily. I do not know why she just doesnt want to rest her head be it lying on the floor or on my chest. the only "tummy time" that works almost all the time is when i put her into a carrier and go for a walk. Again, she will be upset once i sit down to simulate the chest-to-chest position

@vk.09622 жыл бұрын
Hi! Hope it's okay I'm jumping in to answer. I know all of the information online and all of the conflicting opinions are really overwhelming, and I wanted to reassure you that it's okay! It's not too late and you don't need to stress much about tummy time :) I work with newborns and I personally don't feel comfortable putting them on their stomachs at least until they can naturally roll onto their sides. It's very uncomfortable for them when their lungs aren't fully developed and their necks aren't strong enough to lift their heads. If you want to research this perspective more, you can look up natural gross motor development. But if you want to do tummy time then the propped positions in this video are perfect! And in terms of a flat head on one side, try switching the way you hold your baby, laying them in your arms on the opposite side, or turning their head to the side when they're asleep on a flat surface. There are also small pillows with indents in the middle that you can use for wherever you lay your baby down. But you should always talk to your doctor about any concerns that you have :)

I agree with Victoria. There's a place in Europe I'm forgetting the name of that doesn't do forced tummy time and have never had an issue. I think tummy time came about because of SIDS. Babies spend more time on their backs now to prevent the risk of SIDS; especially where kids are not typically carried everywhere. In places and circumstances where that’s true, intentional tummy time is needed.

Hello Emma! We have a beautiful 2 months old baby gilr. She was born on date, not premature. Since we arrived with her from the hospital she sleeps better on her tummy. I don’t know why! A friend of the family told us not to let her sleep on her tummy , she even was very arrogant with us. How can we let her sleep on her tummy!! (We are not good parents). But when we put her on her back at night atfter the bath 🛁 after 1 hour she wakes up and all hell breaks loose. And we must put her on her tummy and like that she sleeps like 4/5hours at 2 months. Are we doing something wrong??? In her crib we have a flat mattress and nothing else, like pillows or other fluffy stuff, also we don’t smoke. We have to put her on the back no matter what? We do it 2 times a day for 5-10 minutes each and we try different poses. Tummy time on his mothers legs is something he doesn't necessarily hates, but still you can see he is not happy with it. Hi Emma, thank you for your videos. They have been very helpful to me as a first time mom. I wanted to ask you a sleep question because I have tried every schedule possible and my 17 month old always wakes up an hour earlier (our desired wake time is 7:30am.) Do you believe that some babies/toddlers have an internal clock? I have tried moving the wake up time earlier to 7am and he ended up waking up before 6am. Not sure if I should just try wake up time at 6:30am as I am afraid he will wake up at 5am.
@EmmaHubbard2 жыл бұрын
Hi @Jennifer Chan the answer to this question really depends on your little one. If there is light coming into your little ones room in the morning it does wake up their internal body clock. So I would keep the room your little one is sleeping in dark until the expected wake up time. Also it's important to work out how much sleep your little one needs in 24 hours. So I would keep track of the amount of sleep they have each day for a week or 2 and then find the average. If your little one only needs 14 hours of sleep in 24 hours and they are having a 3 hour nap in the day and you are putting them to bed at 7pm then they are going to wake at 6 am (because they only need another 11hours sleep). Once you work out your little ones total sleep requirements and then minus the naps you will know how much sleep they need at night and then you can adjust their bedtime to so that they can reach the desired wake up time. Hope that helps a little.
@jenniferchan23852 жыл бұрын
@@EmmaHubbard Thank you so much for your response. I have blackout curtains in the room and white noise running. We always leave him in his bed until desired wake time. We track his sleep, he does on average 12.5 hours in a day. When he takes a long nap of 2.5, I have tried leaving 10 hours of night time sleep to our desired wake time and he still wakes up at 6:30am. What gives 😩

Your videos are very informative, but as a parent that has a baby born with clubfoot , I’m having hard time finding information on how to help make sure he meets all milestones as he should when it comes to rolling over , etc.. he is now 2 months old and was born with a right clubfoot and has just completed 6 weeks of casting to his right foot/leg and now has to wear a brace on his right leg 23 hours a day until he is 6 months old and then just at night time and naps after that until he is 5 years old, (luckily he just has his club foot on his right foot and only has to wear a brace on his right leg/foot, called an ADM brace) I just was wondering if you are able to give any insight on babies with this issue when it comes to developmental gross motor skills, especially while in his brace , since it is uncomfortable and a bit larger .. I’m sure this might help other mothers like me who have a baby with clubfoot has it is a bit more common then I knew of before having my son. Thank you (:

Hi Jayadeep, there is actually a significant amount of evidence and many clinical studies that show the importance of tummy time for development and also helping to prevent conditions like plagiocephaly and torticollis.

My baby hates tummy time on a flat surface. Instead we do loads of babywearing and his head control is just great. We dont own any "baby holding device" that enhance plagiocephaly.

I agree Jayadeep. I didn’t do intentional tummy time with my baby (sometimes baby napped on my chest, I don’t think this counts?). Regardless both babies has great muscle tone and rolled into their tummy themselves at 4.5-5.5 months. For baby’s play time I tried to always just put them flat on their back on the floor, they have total freedom in that position to turn their head from side to side to look at toys on the floor/look around the room. They never got a flat head. I have a theory on flat head: I think today flat head is prevalent because some parents place their babies in contraptions that restrict natural movement (e.g. restricted in car seats, car seats that clip into prams (instead of laying flat in a bassinet), strapped in bouncers, place them under play gyms which direct they gaze only upwards) etc. Therefore to avoid flathead… avoid physically restricting your baby’s free movement and encourage Natural Motor Development. (Also I recommend reading up on the RIE parenting approach)

We did tummy time from the beginning, and now at 10 weeks our daughter is now grabbing objects and reaching out. And starting to show the mechanics of crawling
