@8BitBex But that would have changed Jack's own timeline, so he might not have become the Face of Boe, or not been there to tell the Doctor anything. Or afterwards the Doctor would have to tell Jack when to be at certain places, what to say, when and how Jack will eventually die. But that wouldn't guarantee that Jack as the Face of Boe could keep the dates. However you spin it, the result will be unpredictable and one mistake and we would have the Master as ruler of the universe. As one possible bad outcome.

22:16 II think right there is actually the saddest moment of the episode. The scene where The Doctor breaks down hurts the heart, but in that shot as he's hugging Martha, looking just across the rim of the camera... He looks dead inside. She can't see, so he let's his guard down for just t hat moment, and he is completely emptied out and alone. It's one of the biggest things that begins to be a bit of a stumbling block for 10. In just these first two seasons he's got so much weight on his shoulders.

Martha in this episode shows us the biggest gift of travelling with the Doctor: back in her old life, would she ever imagined for a second that she was capable of what she did in this episode? The Master’s death is so sad yet such a cruel thing to not Regenerate. You can see how hurt The Doctor is, he isn’t just holding his friend or enemy but his brother. It’s tragic because he’s once again The Last Timelord in existence. David Tennant’s acting in that scene is just phenomenal and it’s hard not to feel sad Also The Toclafane twist is brilliant and disturbing. That’s why The Master needed The Paradox Machine so The Toclafane could kill their ancestors without being erased from existence, his plan was so well thought out.

The three finger signal is an old symbol of British defiance, dating back to the Battle of Agincourt. There the longbowmen of England defeated the French knights with arrows that pierced their armor. You draw a longbow with three fingers because of the higher tension. The guy who picks up Martha at the beach (Tom Ellis) goes on to play the title role in the "Lucifer" TV series. It's a hell of a show and I highly recommend it.

It's not just because he's the last one; the Master is the Doctor's best friend, the only Gallifreyan intelligent enough to be feared by the Daleks, sharing countless adventures both as allies and nemeses. That's why the Doctor mourns-the loss of his first love and great friend.

Lots of people not as much of a fan of this episode but its one of my favs: The master and doctor dynamic. Martha jones’s absolute confirmation she is the most capable and badass companion. The best twist ever - face of boe. The more apocalyptic nature of it which surprises you at the beginning. Marthas choice. The toclofane reveal which also shows how the master messes around with humans which is an interesting theme. The scissor sisters dance which gets cut from other versions (but it’s on youtube i think?). The nods to darker topics such as abuse. The ending which people dislike cause its too deus ex machina - but the satellites make it make sense and throughout season 3 there are multiple inferences to timelords feeling god like - master saying you must have felt like god, the face of boe revealing his secret to the “lonely god” - but in actuality it was humanity who made him this way - through technology and mind - and shows that the master thinks of them as degenerate to him but the doctor doesnt and they lift him up…. Yeah i like this ending a lot.

When the Dr visited the year 5 billion with Rose, The earth was destroyed and Jack's immortality was lost. I don't think it is every explicitly stated on the show itself, but the reason for so much of the gadgets and stuff for The Master dates back to his appearances and characterization in Classic Who. Compared to humans and most other lifeforms that they meet, all Time Lords are super geniuses with a wide breadth of knowledge, but compared to each other they definitely have specializations. The Doctor appears to be basically a physicist among Time Lords and The Master is very much an engineer. Every incarnation of The Master does a lot with gadgets, is always creating various kinds of machines, and is much better are repairing/maintaining and piloting a TARDIS.

Turning the Doctor into a wrinkly funko-pop was goofy and the deus ex machina was a bit too on the nose even for this show which utilises it often, just usually in a more interesting or subtle way. My take on Jack and the Face of Boe "reveal" is that, at this point in Jack's timeline, he doesn't know that he'll become the Face of Boe - he's just joking with them as his way to say "bye" (though he might suspect it to be a possibility). People take it as 100% canon that he'll become the Face of Boe and point to this episode as "proof." But while I like the idea, this episode is not the hard proof that everyone takes it to be. There's still room for ambiguity.

After. "moisturize me" was at the end of the Earth's life, some 5 billion years from now. Toclafane are from the end of the universe, some perhaps trillions of years from now. If you recall, at the hospital in New New York with the cat/nun/nurses, the cat nurses created humans and infected them with all known diseases in order to create cures for them, and the doctor cured all of them allowing for a whole new race of humans.

Lucy being brainwashed then overcoming it. Yep Jack back to Torchwood, never dies, no teleport. Also the Face of Boe yep. XD Ah yes Agatha..... Martha staying behind, but seeing again, we will see....... But her being seen/not in moments pf the series then finally saying it to the doctor whoch of course it has relevance, is very interesting I don't always think about it then when its presented I remember what she means. Any downsides this finale may have are, in my opinion, completely counterbalanced by Freema, David, John Simm, and the rest of the cast acting their asses off, not to mention Murray Gold's amazing music. Martha's departure from the TARDIS remains such a triumphant moment for her, sad of course but still empowering. She's finally realised that while he clearly admires and appreciates her, she's never going to be seen in the same light as Rose was, despite her feeling exactly the same love towards him as he did to Rose. I adore Martha, truly one of the most underrated companions in all of Doctor Who.

Never fail to shout out the music. This is Sméagol Doctor becomes Jesus Doctor. “No second chances” Doctor - except for the Master. The Master gets all the chances.
@s1b3r11Ай бұрын
yes, because the doctor is not an objective, impartial incarnation of justice who always treats everybody the same but a complicated character with flaws. The master is not the only one who gets special treatment. Pretty much everybody the Doctor cares about does too. Doctor encounters death many times and while he usually tries to help he is also very detached and clearly doesn't care that much, on the other hand if he had to chose between Rose and entire planets he would have probably chosen Rose. Same with the Earth. The Doctor is emotionally connected to the earth and therefore tries to protect it but cares significantly less about other places therefore he is ok with fighting the Master on other planets... And The Master also has always been given all the chances because he is more important to the Doctor than the others and the Doctor considers him his friend... It's not just the case of RTD and this episode, in classic he was also given all the chances, and in one novel.... don't want to spoil anything but let's just say the Doctor is willing to go to great lengths to help the Master... I've always found it weird how people want protagonists to be impartial, emotionless gods.. the doctor is not that, he is a complicated person with emotions, connections and many many flaws.

While the Doctor regaining his strength from everyone saying his name is... A bit weird, the Shakespeare episode did establish the power of words so its not entirely out of nowhere.

And I think everyone forgets that there is the telepathic network in place. Master had managed to brainwash everyone with just four knocks, and here we have a whole word imbued with meaning from Martha's tales.

It was the psychic link via the archangel network. The masters tool to mind control people to vote for him, was turned against him.

This episode is 5 minutes shorter outside the UK. A whole musical bit is cut, for example.

It was there when I saw it years back. I just got some used DVDs, but my player isn't currently working, so I hope the whole thing is on them.

It's been years since i watched these episodes but just now i realized that the guy helping Martha is Tom Elis who later played Lucifer Morningstar in Lucifer show. Great actor.

The shooting of the Paradox machine and reversing time works for me but the Doctor coming back because everyone thinks it stretches plausible to the limit. I never see the Doctor as space Jesus or a God
@jennifermorris68482 ай бұрын
But in episode 12 they say we can’t touch the paradox machine until we know what it does because if we touch the wrong thing we could rip a hole in the solar system. Why would shooting it wantonly in episode 13 work?

@fayesouthall6604 They did but still everyone thinks 'Doctor' and suddenly he can use it to heal himself. I have mixed feelings about it. Same with a more recent episode.

The master is truly pure evil that he rather die and let the doctor be alone as the last timelord

Wait, what’s the difference between the two versions?

Not sure if it's the only thing, but I think the longer one has the "I Can't Decide" number

US version has a song cut at the beginning and a scene with Martha's mum holding the gun near the end
@jaydenyugi90342 ай бұрын
The other version cuts out certain scenes such as the I can’t decide song scene and also Francine contemplating on whether to shoot the Master and also Martha calling Tom to make sure he’s still alive and also giving the professor flowers. Small parts of Martha’s gospel to the Doctor also might have been cut in that version too IIRC.

@ that’s crazy! Why on earth would they do that?
@somerandomguy20732 ай бұрын
@@qqqqqqqqqqqq121212US television has adverts, so they cut several scenes for time so they could fit the regular time slot and play commercials. The BBC doesn't have any commercials, so they can extend or reduce time slots without much concern. This episode is longer than usual, so the US cut it down.
