One additional level of tragedy to Miyagi's backstory - while he was fighting as a US Soldier in Europe, his pregnant wife had been moved to an internment camp. The lack of medical care is most likely what contributed to the death of his wife and child. 💔
@waterbeauty85
@waterbeauty85 4 ай бұрын
She was in the Manzanar Internment Camp which had general medical care at the camp, but for specialty care like ob/gyn you would need for complications in childbirth you would have to transport the patient over 220 miles to Los Angeles General (because they were prisoners, getting clearance to to that wasn't easy) or get a doctor to travel out to the camp. Since Miyagi said "No doctor come," it sounds like the camp tried to get a doctor to come to the camp rather than transporting her.

More to come, part II! (no spoilers, but you have to keep going, explain so much). So many one liners, ( sweep the leg, squish like grape, wax on, wax off). Ralph (Daniel) was 24 at the time! Elisabeth Shue was a great soccer player, actually taught Ralph how to juggle. In the novel, Daniel was mistaken as a worker (can't remember valet or busboy) in his white/ red jacket, that's how he got in the kitchen. Miyagi (character) was in the (real) 100th battalion/ 442nd in WWII, the medal Daniel was holding is the Congressional Medal of Honor, the highest award for valor and gallantry. Most are posthumously given. Miyagi's wife was sent to Manzanar relocation camp in WWII. (Medical treatment was not adequate).

Johnny saying “your alright Larusso” was already built up when Johnny doubted his teacher. On top of that we know he didn’t want to fight dirty and even when he did, he still lost. That can definitely gain someone’s respect, so I wouldn’t say him respecting Daniel is out of nowhere. Nice reaction tho nevertheless!

But the time I just watched it with you, I watched the final scene in full-screen on my desktop computer. That "healing process" Mr. Miyagi did, I have done it too to a couple of students in the dojo I train in. I don't know if that's the idea behind it when he does it, but on my case, it's simple placebo. The kid complains about some pain, I tell them I'll fix it, do the hand rubbing, then press my hand on their foot or leg or whatever they're complaining about, then I ask them if they feel better. Almost always they'll say yes, and go back to training. If this brought you desire to practice karate, why not? I started training when I was 41yo, 6 years ago. It's never too late, and my only regret is not starting it sooner.

This film just doesn't age. It's timeless. I would say a wonderful motivational film for anyone but... I can't deny it has a very special meaning for young men. Daniel is in need of if not a father, then an understanding mentor for a time in one's life where you are halfway between full autonomy and still being governed in the wider world not too differently than a young child. Miyagi DOES need a son. He needs to help this teenager navigate his troubles and the way to do that is by passing down the legacy of his family's Okinawan Karate, a thing I think he probably thought was impossible. There's much chemistry and depth with these characters. Is there some cheese? A little. It's a light dusting of grated Parmesan at best. 😊 Happy you enjoyed it.

The phrase " OH Grasshopper ", isn't from the karate kis saga. It comes from around ten years BEFORE *The karate kid* was even thought of. Oh Grasshopper was used back in the early seventies from the TV show *Kung Fu*, starring David Karadine who plays the part of a Shaolin Temple priest, who gets wrongly accused of murder in China, and is forced to leave China and emirates to the USA, time frame is the 1800's during the wild wild west of the cowboy days. He travels the USA going from place to place having adventures, while dodging the Chines bounty hunters still searching for him as he's wanted in China for murder, and there's a seriously large reward out for him, wanted dead or alive.

Actually, Pat Morita WAS nominated for best supporting Oscar, but did NOT win it... He DID win the Golden Globe though for the same category... Ironically, the scene that got him the nods was the one where we learned his back story, about his medal of honor, and his wife and son... Ironic because they wanted to cut that scene from the movie, but Pat Morita threw a fit about keeping it in, so they left it in to humor him... His Oscar nomination made him the first Asian American to ever be nominated in that category...

so without spoilers, here's a bit of info on the film: Daniel: So Daniel is primarily known for a few things, firstly his interest in Karate, he is also good with girls, he's charming but that does have a backlash of being a bit overly pushy sometimes (you see it from time to time), however he lacks true confidence in himself...that is partially because he is in a new place and he doesn't know anyone (i know how this feels) but it's also because he tends to be temperamental. Mr Miyagi: Miyagi is from Okinawa, Japan the origin of Karate (supposedly) he is a friendly and understanding old man who has the wisdom of patience and experience. However he does have a sad history that i won't go into (it's in the film). He wants Daniel to understand that karate isn't just about confrontation... John (The Karate Sensei): What is completley wrong and misguided about the way he is teaching his students karate is that karate is supposed to be for self defence...only use it to protect yourself...he is combining it with military methods for assault.

As someone else pointed out, the medal Daniel is holding is the Medal of Honor as awarded by Congress. It's especially sad that his family died while he fighting in Italy. True story: Nisei didn't fight in the Pacific for obvious reasons, so they mostly fought in Europe, in this case Italy. Now recall that Japan was officially a member of the Axis, hence allied with Germany. German POWs in Italy were marched by some Nisei soldiers, while the Germans stared in confusion. The American guard saw them and laughed "What, you believe everything Goebbels tells you?" All the following movies are worth watching. I even like The Next Karate Kid with Hilary Swank. Spoiler: she doesn't die in this one. The shao lin monks were especially fun.

To me, the second movie is the best. The best thing about the cobra Kia series is seeing all these people coming back.

EMME, can I suggest you watch the 1983 fantasy movie Krull. It did not do well at the box office due to other big movies in the same year, especially Return of the Jedi, however it’s a classic movie liked by all. Stars the lovely English actress Lysette Anthony who I think was only 19 at the time and the lead actor was Ken Marshall who is eye candy for the ladies😁. Also has Liam Neeson(from Star Wars and Taken) in it in his first film role. The soundtrack is also fantastic.

So excited for Emma to see the movies and cobra Kai series. The movies are fantastic, and the show is legendary. There is a fourth movie of course to consider watching just in case it comes up in the later series, but we know the first three movies are required watching.

William Zabka, the actor playing Johnny, was also in another movie, Just One of the Guys, a year later, in which he played another bully.

One thing I love about these movies, is they stress the importance of one concept in life, and that becomes the highlight of the fight. The first one, learn balance, and wins by kicking from standing in one leg. The fourth one is a little obvious, (without Daniel) fighting is never good, but if you have to fight, Win! I won't spoil the less obvious lessons of two and three, but reminds me my sensei many years ago said to me, "What is most important about karate is being able to take the lessons you learn here and apply them in your life."

There are a lot of people that mistakenly believe that Johnny is an innocent victim in this movie, and that Daniel is the actual “villain”, which makes no sense if you really watch the film.

Mr. Miyagi has a Medal Of Honor (the U.S. military's highest award for valor) which I'm willing to let slide because it's important for Daniel to see the word "valor" on the medal. However, at the time this movie was released, Pfc. Sadao Munemori who used his own body as a shield to save his follow soldiers from an exploding German grenade was famously the only member of the Japanese-American 442nd Regimental Combat Team (Miyagi's unit) to receive the MOH. I say famously because, in light of the many exceptional acts of courage by the 442, it struck everybody as very odd that only one member had been given the MOH. This eventually led to over 50 Distinguished Service Crosses (the U.S. military's second highest award for valor) given to 442 members being reevaluated which resulted in 20 of the DSCs being upgraded to the MOH in, but this wasn't until 2000 - sixteen years after "The Karate Kid." Speaking of a DSC being upgraded to the MOH, consider watching "The Last Full Measure" (2019) starring Sebastian Stan. It's based on the true story of the 32 year fight to get the DSC awarded to Air Force Pararescueman William H. Pitsenbarger in the Vietnam War upgraded to the MOH. It touches on the themes of heroism, sacrifice, PTSD, a particular aspect of combat survivor guilt that is very common but seldom gets discussed, the challenge of cutting through politics and bureaucracy.

17:14 Actually, the ocean in California (and the rest of the West Coast) is almost always very cold. That's because the current along the west coast moves from north to south, so all the frigid water from Alaska travels down. For warm ocean water, you have to go to the East Coast because there the current moves from south to north.

Israel Juarbe, the actor who played 'Freddy', managed to sneak a shirt into the film that wasn't originally intended to be shown. At around 2:37, you can spot Freddy wearing a shirt depicting two pigs engaged in intercourse, with the caption 'making bacon'.

The end of the movie was actually used as the first scene of Karate Kid II, because the director thought it wasn’t a finisher scene.
