I'm 14 (Young for a song like this, I know) and my mother used to sing this to me, until I was 7, before I went to bed. She sadly passed away last year and I've finally found this again. There's a part of me that feels like she's still with me and it brings me comfort.

Lovely, I’m 14 and my mom sang this to me every night, I always imagined a young girl standing out in the woods in a patch of flowers with a cabin in the background as I sat in my bed with the song in my ears. I’ll be quite sad when my mom is gone, but this will make she feel like she is with me at all times.

I'm not even Irish, yet this makes me want to cry. I sing the first verse to my little one, since she has Irish blood from her mom's side. It's my way to teach her to remember her Irish roots, and how an ancestor Irish mother might of sang a lullaby to her kids.

My mother turned 90 a few weeks ago and we ended our ‘family reunion’ birthday party for her by singing this song. Two of us accompanied on guitar and ukulele and Mom sang along with the group. In fact she sang this song to ALL of us at bedtime and my sisters and I continue the tradition - four generations cherish the memories!!

I am 21yrs of age, and when I have kids of my own, I’ll tell them of my grandma and how she would always sing this to me while rocking me fast asleep. She is still alive(thank goodness) but my grandpa died 11 years ago come November 23(day after my bday). I'm going to ask her to sing it with me tomorrow if she's up for it. I envy people in their late 20s early 30s who still have their grandparents. I never knew my dad's parents and I lost my grandparents who were literally my second parents 11 & 7 years ago. I remember both my Irish American dad and German American mom singing lullabies to my sisters and myself. I sang this to my girls and they to their kids. About 12 years ago, my grandmother came to live with us after a stroke. My first granddaughter was about 3 then and she spent many nights with us. I would sing this to her at bedtime. Shortly, my grandmother asked me to sing it to her too. She liked having someone in the room with her as she fell asleep. No matter how old are young they are, when someone needs or wants you to sing them lullabies, I hope you recognize the honor and privilege and sing your heart out! ❤️❤️

@Talcum First off, anyone with Parents or Grandparents that were born in Ireland has the right to speak about Ireland. It’a misinformation to say that it’s an American song when someone with Irish lineage wrote about Ireland from second-hand experience. People from Ireland today have this song sung to them regularly, I’ve seen a bunch in this very comment section. Not fair to say it’s “not an Irish song”, cause it’s just about as Irish as you want to make it.

Let’s be honest hear if you’re even 1/16 Irish you’ve already mastered this song to a tee, just like if you’re 1/16 Italian you’ve masters that’s amore. It’s all because these songs were written by our own people.

i learnt the chorus of this song in 2nd grade when i was homeschool. has always been my favorite lullaby yet my parents could never remember it, thought it was a weird fever dream or something. googled the lyrics finally 6-7 years later and i’m so happy i could find the full version. made me tear up.

dude WTF!!! My grandma used to sing this to me but with my name woven in. The whole family thought she made up the song all these years. Oh grandma I was not expecting such a strong moment of remembrance looking up Irish lullabies

30 years ago, my dear old nana would sing this to me as a little lad and i'd sing I've got a lovely bunch of coconuts for her after. Touched a lovely memory there, thanks.

There's something so beautiful, saddening, nostalgic, and inspiring about this song. It reminds me of Hunchback of Notre Dame

My grandma used to sing this to me as a child. She passed away July 2, 2022. I miss her terribly, but listening to this song and singing it to my son makes it feel like shes still with me.

Thank you Cheers for introducing me to this song, because my father name is Kelleher, and it is very much Irish. I hated the Bing Crosby version, but once i found this one, i was at home. The first version of Danny Boy i found was Roy Orbison's and it was the only one by a big star i could find that did the whole song. It was the first version i heard after a fella sang it at my uncle Dan's funeral(when i first discovered it), the only time i ever saw my Grandpa Gene cry.
