After listening to the other recording of Bartley on this chart so many times it’s great to see him take a new solo on it. It gives the listener so much insight into what Bartley’s improvisation process actually is, what stuff stays consistent throughout his performances, what chord tones or extensions he leans to melodically, etc. Can’t get enough of these guys.
@andrewboyd12343 жыл бұрын
Also it goes without saying that Patrick B is blowing the lid off of the joint every time he lays it down. Every time I see his name I get excited because I know he’s going to lay something beautifully melodic, incredibly phrased, and most importantly straight from the heart. This dude is amazing!
@altariabeats3 жыл бұрын
Interesting to hear this perspective. To offer a different view, my interpretation is that Patrick delivered this solo as a "call-back" to his viral solo in the living room session. Many of the familiar phrases are the same harmonically as you stated, but the beautify in it to me is that he intentionally placed those phrases with incredible grace and artistic skill, while varying the rhythmic devices and different shape approaches in a way to make it completely unique while telling a similar story to his prior solo. So much so that I bet he could play his original solo note for note at this moment. Simultaneously he has such massive vocabulary that he could play 10 chorus' without repeating a phrase. Of course this is just my opinion and I could be completely wrong. Either way, we can both agree that Patrick Bartley demonstrates complete virtuosity over musical self-expression, the saxophone, and artistic delivery! Cheers!

@@altariabeats You shoudl check out Pat's J-Music Ensemble material/TwitchTV streams - I was struck by his amazing musicianship the first time I saw his stream (followed him for a couple of years now). The facility and musicality improvising over VGM (of all things) with each note having a life of its own and infused with groove. He's also brilliant on soprano (I often find too screechy) - highly listenable. I found Pat via The Consouls who also turn VGM into great jazz and for the last few years I have just enjoyed the vast VGM repertoire but Pat brought me to Emmet which then brought me back to straight-ahead jazz which I had not listened to for some time. Just loving this jazz universe!

Check out his own channel! I found him through my love of video game covers! I found Cohen separately. Then imagine the pure joy I felt when these two virtuosos just fell together. Cohen even has a video game cover on his channel! Ultimately this helped show me that jazz is a confluence of what we love, what we hear, who we know, and whom we love!

Look Patrick Bartley's solo was out of this world on the last recording at Emmets place and not to say this solo was any worse, however Emmet was on something this performance. The stride playing combined with some of the most lyrical lines delivered all while by himself sounded beyond unbelievable. Emmet sounded like he was being possessed by a collective of his influences and idols and I couldn't imagine a better solo, Well done guys!

The original's lyrics have the vibe of "after you've gone, you'll regret it," while the musical vibe even then was almost more "after you've gone, I'll be partying." Here's a link to the original recording from 1918 sung by Marion Harris if you guys are interested kzbin.info/www/bejne/jIiWZKJ-lKqejZYsi=h8XnNH6QgIkkDGWU. Fun fact: some people claim that was the very first jazz recording, although there's plenty of other contenders for that title.
