She is not mean spirited, she’s just the kind of character that most people would want to avoid, because she is anything but relaxing. The joke of it all is that she thinks that she is actually impressing people by putting on airs. She can’t see that she is having just the opposite effect on them!

We used to find it funny when there’s a scene in Emmet and Elizabeth’s house, Emmet would be playing a lovely tune on the piano, and then the phone would ring, he’ll carry on playing and say something like “if that’s her again, tell her we’re busy”. But all she says is “ok Hyacinth, 7:30 for candlelight supper” Then as soon as Emmet hears her saying that, he stops playing and just drops both hands on the keys “DUNNNNNNNNNNN” 😂😂😂😂

Just like he did when he was trying to accompany Hyacinth on the piano in the church hall once, for a rehearsal that he couldn’t get out of. Not only was her singing really awful as usual, but also her habit of constantly banging the top of the piano was absolutely unbearable. She would do this in order to shut Emmet up before blaming him for getting the music wrong each time. This then led to Emmet banging on random keys on the piano saying ‘Enough, enough’ in rhythm with the strange notes, followed by ‘I cannot take it.’ When Hyacinth asks Elizabeth who is standing by him what he cannot take, Elizabeth suddenly thinks of an answer and replies that he doesn’t like the chair. Elizabeth then calms Emmet down and suggests to him to get another chair. Emmet then says with gritted teeth as calmly as possible, that he will get another chair. It is so brilliant.

One day years ago was sat watching rehearsals at the former Tower Theatre at Cononbury in Islington London, in the searing was the late George Webb who lived nearby, he played Daddy in the series, I asked him why did the series end, he told me that Patricia didn’t want to do anymore. George sadly died in 1998.
