There is a certain truth in this music, which is why it will attract new generations who will ensure it´s survival. Swing, the blues, complete mastery of melodic, harmonic, rhythmic vocabulary and obviously the virtuosity to pull it off. Eric Joe and Vincent are keepers of the flame and the elders.

Just discovered drummer Farnsworth on Emmets Monday nights and his ability to stay relaxed at such a high pace for so long is impressive to a drummer like myself and his solos are simple yet creative ....Ive seen he plays SMALLS jazz club in NYC a lot , really need to see him live now. Does he come to West Coast like Monterey Jazz fest and does he teach drums in New York City area? anyone know? I found out he played on many Eric Alexander albums and maybe went to music college with him...he is a real jewel of the NYC jazz scene.

Reminded me a bit of Woody Shaw's classic 'Rhasaan's Run' from his 1977 classic 'Rosewood'. Here they got faster tempo, but harmonic rhythm slower, meaning this is 24 bar form as opposed to 12, which in fact I prefer because i feel that one can appreciate each chord changes better. Killer group and burnin performance.
@davidsheriff92742 жыл бұрын
It's interesting that Emmit taps his foot on the quarter notes, I saw a video with Hal Galper where he talks about how to sound very loose on fast tempos,he said to tap your foot on 1 and 3, because it turns your quarter notes into 8th notes like you're playing double time on a Ballad, but Emmit seems to be doing pretty well with his way 😁
@777morgan33 жыл бұрын
back again, like this live version more than recorded one it has fire urgency , erick is a heavy weight champ herring is standing up very stoic but wait until he open fire wow that articulation on erick and vincent is a life time of playing emitt playing opposite patterns left right hands touches of mccoy tyner herring is using entire range of horn upper range very clear i recognize some of oliver nelson patterns which i always like to hear hall on bass wow love joe;s suit and of course he's shark dont get cut

Did the sound quality just get an upgrade? It sounds very crisp IMO. (or maybe it's just the supreme sax tone)

It does sounds CRISPR, that ride cymbal is just crystal clear
@cooldebt3 жыл бұрын
@@RyanonBasss or perhaps Krisp? ;)
@patrickguyum3 жыл бұрын
They have an overhead mic now, which catches the high ends of that ride better. They also clip-on mic'ed the saxes this time, which gives a more aggressive and in-your-face sound than the 1-2ft mic they've been running previously that caught more of the room
@patrickguyum3 жыл бұрын
IMO the overheads sound a bit hot making that ride sound really bright (or maybe the cymbal itself is just ridonk bright), and I kind of liked the room sound vibe they had going way more. Far more in line with the usual aesthetic approach for this kind of music. Whether it's a choice or they're adjusting things idk, but it's up to them at the end of the day no matter what.

Beautiful playing all around. You may, however, want to invest less than $5 - $10 and get some cymbal felts and sleeves for those cymbal stands, lest those expensive cymbals will be ruined with keyholes or cracks.

Eric seemed like he was most in the groove on this tune. Compared to his playing on the other tracks which was burnin' but it seemed awkward. Or maybe it seems like there is an inside joke between the drummer and bassist all the time lol.

As Nick Brignola used to say, “Jazz is not for the masses.” Like classical music, it requires an educated audience in the art form to fully appreciate what is happening melodically, harmonically, rhythmically, and historically.
