So...here I am a 67 year old woman who only wishes I had had your self confidence at any time in my life. Bad comments aside for now, you are doing something so right for someone so young. You have expanded my reading life like no other. Your reading War and Peace and crying while doing so gave me the (courage?) to read it. It was my first book of 2022 and I am grateful. There are images from it in my head forever now...beautiful images. Taking your bad comments and turning them into recs was a brilliant idea. Reminded me of "I'm rubber, your glue. The words bounce off me and stick to you." I have a feeling that whatever you do, you will succeed. Thanks for the great content.

A piece of advice: don't take haters too seriously, you can read the critical comments from time to time but it's not essential that you read all the hate from some people. And about pale skin, it's all a matter of taste... I personally like your skin color because I'm from a Latin American country where most people are very tanned...🤍

Emma, I'm a primary school (elementary) teacher here in Australia and I really feel like showing portions of this video to my students as an example of how nasty, bullying comments can be deflected with such grace, erudition, and intelligence (and just the perfect amount of sass!) The comments about "what are you gonna do with your degree" are so relatable to me. I'm a history major (currently doing my master) and all I ever get is either that question or "sooo you wanna be a teacher then, right?". No Susan, I don't wanna teach kids. Don't get me wrong, I have the highest respect for teachers, but I could never. I think what I love about my degree (and what you probably also love about yours) is that it gives us the ability to acquire knowledge we're interested in, but doesn't pigeonhole to just doing one specific job. Sure, it's not as safe as studying law or medicine and just knowing you'll be a doctor or attorney, but it gives us more freedom to pursue many different things that we're passionate about. I could never imagine just doing one thing as a job for my entire life. That's just me.

The book consumption as a food pyramid made me think! Havent thought this through well but: - widest part of the pyramid (carbs) should be the books/genres i really love reading and are easy to read as the bulk of what makes me full - next level (veggies) are the 'healthy' books that are challenging and expands my view - meat/proteins - genres i dont typically go for but sometimes have a craving of - tippy top, consume in moderarion (junk food) - trash!! Terrible books that are fun but could not subsist on

Regarding what you're saying at 22:49, I feel like sometimes people on the internet will see someone like you, an intelligent, beautiful girl, and they'll create a mental image in their head of what they think that you are.. and I feel like it very often starts to see-saw into the Manic Pixie Dream Girl type who only reads old literature and never delves into the "trash" that younger people read nowadays... and it's like, as soon as you shatter their mental image of you (by reading books that maybe they deem less *important* than books like Paradise Lost, War and Peace, "literature", etc.) they get like offended or something that you you're own person with your own tastes and preferences, and that you can be multi-faceted and enjoy War and Peace while also enjoying YA and Romance?? It's bizarre. I have no idea if the point I'm trying to make makes any sense at all lmao but I hope you get it. The point being, those people are DUMB and pls read whatever the hell you want.

I love the way you handled/responded to the haters. On a side note; my mom passed away from C in December 2020…I had to clean out her house in summer of 2021. I listened to the audiobooks of the Shatter Me Series…they carried me through a very difficult time and I will always carry the feelings & emotions those books evoked inside me. They helped carry the burden of my loss. I’m tearing up just remembering the love I have for those books.

You look so confident and happy talking about what you love, dear Emma. That shows you chose the best path. When I first saw you I thought of what Anastasia Steele's life would have been if she had preferred the right way. You're stunning as the actress, but your intellect and self-realization make you a complete gem. This combination cannot leave haters alone. Those people just have no passion in life and little attention to themselves. We love you, sunshine 💛

Love you Emma! I love middle grade and children's books and read them still and I'm in my 50's! Who cares what you love, it's wonderful. Read every age group; children's books, middle grade, ya, adult . . . Romance is warm and fuzzy if it's good quality. I can't wait for your video on your English degree. Looking forward!

I really love the way you described the books we read being together with us, like living inside our hearts and minds and just being there that we can hear, smell, and taste them whenever we come across them deep inside our memory lane. It really resonates with me and made me think about the way I view myself as a reader. Plus I wanted to thank you for the content you make, haters can go to hell. I have been following you for 2 years now and believe me when I say whenever I see a notification from you, my heart lights up, and the minutes I spend watching your videos are the golden time of my day. So thank you very much. Love all the way from Morocco 🇲🇦.

I LOVED this video!! How about making one of these once a year? Sarcasm is always entertaining!😊 Also, there is some connection between Rice's vampires and "sunbathing" but I won't say anything more 😉

As someone who used to be a freelance global headhunter for a multi-billion dollar life science company. I saw 1000’s of CV’s/resumes and it really did not matter that much about what degree someone had, it was more about the fact that they HAD a degree. People who have the work ethic, the research skills, the focus to actually complete a degree is one of the main reasons employers want someone with a degree. If you can back that up with experience in whatever job you are going for, then (unless a certain degree is asked for) it doesn’t matter. It just proves that the person can put their head down and get the work done. Always do what you are passionate about because otherwise you are just dragging yourself through a life you have no interest in. Great video! ♥️

I'm in HR and agree 100%. In most cases, completing the degree matters, not the area of study.

Hi Emma I just wanted to say that I absolutely love your videos. They are always so full of insight, wisdom and witty commentary. I’ve actually been dying to know what your annotation process is like and was reminded again after seeing your heavily tabbed phantom of the opera book (which is amazing btw, I always love seeing all the different colored tabs hinting at all the gorgeous genius to be discovered within the book’s pages). I would just love to know how you annotate books and organize the thoughts and ideas you have while reading. Thanks!

I think it's very telling that almost all the comments originate from men. Just saying... and I also majored in a "useless" degree (East Asian Studies) because I have a passion for it and now I'm happily employed and make more money than I've ever expected. I also know a lot of people who majored in "important" degrees who are completely wrecked now and hate their life. So never listen to anyone telling you to major in a subject you have no interest in just because it will make you rich. Fact is that there are no guarantees in life and you can end up broke no matter what you majored in. So at least have fun and enjoy yourself.

Women think and say nasty thoughts about other women but don't share them directly--they talk behind their back about them to their friends. A lot of men are indeed assholes, but so are a lot of women--they just hide it a bit better.

I love this video so, so much. Us English majors and artists are tired of justifying our choices and existence to people in our lives, I can only imagine how annoying it's to receive these anonymous comments online. We've heard all the jokes about our future financial state and the uselessness of our degree. We know what we're getting into from the start. The fact that some people don't see the value in what we do, doesn't mean that it's not valuable. Belittling our degree just because it isn't going to cure a disease is an ignorant take, at best. Literature might not save lives on the surface, but it has saved mine many times and provided an escape from the darkest chasms of my mind. Sending love to you, Emmie, and I'm really looking forward to your video! xx
