Emma, I got news this morning that my grandmother passed away and this whole day I’ve been up on my room, trying to come to terms with my grief. This video and your channel in general have calmed my anxiety in exam season, muffled my loneliness after moving to a new country, and kept me company in moments of struggle. Now, you are filling the silence of my room with your voice, talking about books and helping me take one step at a time through life. I know many people can relate and I would like to thank you for creating a safe space in a corner of the internet.

Ooh, I don't know anything about Angela Carter's story, but "Erlkönig" (The Erlking) is a very famous Goethe poem that got quite wonderfully set to music by Franz Schubert. (I would recommend any recording by Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau.)

The Monk is one of my favourite books of all time, but a very self-conscious favourite that I don’t tell other people about because of how violent and atrocious the acts perpetrated by the monk and Matilda are. But it’s one of the best examples of the horror subcategory of the Gothic and very much reflective of the anxieties of the highly Protestant British people at the time, who were witnessing from across the pond the French Revolution. So happy to see my favourite booktuber giving it a chance!

I'm taking a class on Angela Carter, and especially this collection, this semester, and it's been the best class I've ever taken! It's amazing when you read it by yourself, but it's completely fascinating to study: there is sooo much intertextuality, and Carter is basically a genius. It's nice to see you love it :)

I read The Bloody Chamber and absolutely FELL IN LOVE with her writing, to the point where I'm doing my Honours Dissertation, (and hopefully, my Master's thesis), on her. If you're looking for a book similar to The Bloody Chamber, there's nothing quite like it, that's the standout in her whole literary canon. However, Shadow Dance, (Honeybuzzard in the US) and The Magic Toyshop are very Gothic books, and Nights at the Circus is an incredible historical fiction with some Gothic elements thrown in. If you can find them, I think you will love all of these stories! Happy Reading.

Just pausing the video to recommend modern writers who are similar in style to Angela Carter: Kirsty Logan, Julia Armfield, Ha Seong-nan, Carmen Maria Machado, Cassandra Parkin (specifically her New World Fairy Tales), Deidre Sullivan, Alice Thompson (particularly The Book Collector). You might also enjoy my books The Beginning of the World in the Middle of the Night and The Sister Who Ate Her Brothers. Heading back to the video now for more cosiness. xx

Still reading Proust. He has met an artist, one might even say a famous artist, and is spending time in his studio. I think that you would like this part because he's spending a lot of words describing the artist's landscapes. The language is very flowery. Lucy would like it too, I'd say, because one suspects that Proust influenced Woolf. Thx Emma
