As a pre medical student currently applying to medical school I love the idea of scheduling your month in advanced! It’s so easy to allow things to pile up and feel overwhelmed but this seems like the solution so thank you 💜
@miriam59332 жыл бұрын
As a junior oncologist I would like to tell my med school self (and also you if you find it helpful) not to get too obsessed with organisation and control. It is helpful, but things are going to pile up and be overwhelming at times anyway, and life is going to get in the way of your plans. And it is not going to get better as responsibility increases but you are going to get better at handling it, sometimes by not getting things too seriously or not being super harsh on yourself. You are going to have the most beautiful profession ☺️

I read the body keeps the score around Christmas and my life since then has changed a lot. one thing I would recommend is maybe consider therapy so you have a space to process the emotions and trauma that comes up as a result. It really is a great book and helped me with understanding how my trauma manifests in my anxiety and in physical distress, but I don't think I would have gotten as much from it had I not been in therapy and had a designated space to explore memories resurfacing.

Hi Emma! I'm a new subscriber to your channel! Booktube as I'm discovering is a whole different ecosystem with its own idiosyncratic heartbeat. I'm liking your vlog a lot and you stand out simply for the way you personalize the reading experience as a university student and as a passionate leisure activity complimented with your delightful tea selections, home interior paraphernalia and your eclectic taste for fashion which combines the vintage and the contemporary. There are so many take-aways as a casual observer: principally your reading diary, your flair for video editing, the constant streams of zooms, jump-cuts and close-ups of your hands flipping through pages or sifting bookshelves, and of course, the inevitable product placement. Haha! The experience brings a warm smile to my face, seeing you lost in the ecstasy of wintry solitude only Canada can conjure. I guess that makes me a fan. Hold tight, with your organizational skills you look all set to go!

I have to say, as a fellow short story hater, I really enjoyed the Witcher short stories. They're really something kind of in between short stories and a novel because there is definitely a narrative tying them all together, and I felt like they contributed a lot to the Witcher universe. I would highly recommend giving them a chance.

The Body Keeps The Score is an AMAZING book. It’s written very well for a science based book. It is very helpful for survivors of trauma but also people who have loved ones who are trauma survivors. It helps you understand them if you haven’t experienced it yourself and if you have it helps you understand your body and mind. Honestly… amazing. PLEASE READ IT! I kinda get people saying that it’s bringing things up for them but honestly I didn’t think it was triggering. It’s academic enough IMO to help you understand what’s going on in your brain and body without leaving you in pieces. And the last part of the book is his years of findings in the most effective treatment methods and he explains what isn’t effective and why not. I can’t wait until it’s safe to get EMDR for my mom who has survived more than I can imagine and talk therapy did nothing for her.

I've been reading the witcher series: I would recommend the Last Wish and Sword of Destiny first before Blood of Elves, then there is Season of Storms that was published after the 5 book saga. Heads up, the 5 book saga drags after the first 2-3 (as in a slog/chore to finish them); I'm finishing up Season of Storms now and it is far easier to stay engaged in that one as it is more similar to the short stories than the full novels. Still enjoy the main characters but annoying when so many others (both people and side plots) are brought in that are inconsequential to the main story.

Seamus Heaney did an _excellent_ translation of Beowulf. He kept the original stave rhyme format for his version and it's so good! Kind of bummed you now have Ireland covered :) I was going to heavily suggest "Angela's Ashes" by Frank McCourt which is one of the best novels I ever read, hands down :)
@jamesduggan72002 жыл бұрын
I would certainly agree that AA is a fine read though as a novel it lacks a little bit in conflict and resolution. McCourt's highly evocative style is reminiscent of Tolstoy, well, perhaps a slightly perverse Tolstoy.
@romywolfofficial2 жыл бұрын
@@jamesduggan7200 I agree that is has no true conflict or resolution, but imho that's because it's a memoir/the story of the author's childhood in Limerick. However, as a storyteller I think Frank McCourt was incredible. To find the humor and sense of absurdity in the trauma that he went through as a kid ... I'm not sure I ever read anything that made me laugh one paragraph and then cry in the next. Frank McCourt's voice really carries the book which is why I guess the movie adaptation was such a ... Big Ball of Meh. It's hard to capture in pictures what McCourt so eloquently put into words

In the big hit film, "Godfellas", there's a joke about how all the boys at a wedding are named either Peter or Paul. Perhaps in an earlier time, i.e., Milton's England, all boys were named John (or James). In some cultures, 'the sons of thunder' (Christ's (half-)brothers) are more revered than either the rock on whom the Church was built or its chief architect.

Regarding The Body keeps the score, I just want to let you know you should take your time, put it down when you need and balance it with something pleasant. It was the only book I felt like I need to put down and take a break from because of its difficult topics ( and I'm a psychologist & read and loved A little life) At the same time, this book is 10/10 and eye-opening

Good luck with the work load this month!🍀 I am currently reading Ray Bradbury's Fahrenheit 451 which is so so so good. Also chapter by chapter reading a book by Matt Parker full of mathematical mistakes which is really funny. And studying bits and parts of Frankenstein for English class for my oral next week :)

good luck - Orals are nerve-wracking. I was pretty confident with my three inquisitors, but I think that knowing they would accept my Thesis made me worry that much more it wasn't worth anything. Also, there's that weird tension about what comes next since there's never any room currently in the Department. That's how it was for me. I hope for you there's a cushy job and office already lined up!
