Buried my black cat Bandit to this song in 2017. Rescued her as an emaciated kitten in the Texas woods in 2008. She was all bones but had a will to live. My other cat rejected / threatened her, so I had to give her to a friend. She lived an “orphaned” life until she died at only 9 yrs old. I told my friend that I would take her “back home”. We covered her with red dirt that day as Emmy Lou was singing in the background. My tears just dripped and dripped, until the red was a dark moist brown. 😿🙏🏻🤍

This was a dark departure for her, and it's stunning. Producer Daniel Lanois is playing that searing guitar! May I also suggest her concept album, 'the ballad of Sally Rose'. Her poorest selling album is my favorite! Semi-dark. But I've also loved her since day one. Less in the 90's, when she was sliding into the country market.

This is one of her most poignant and musically brilliant pieces of work, of course composed, orchestrated and written by Emmylou. As far as her impetus for writing this song, she is speaking to millions of women whose lives trail into oblivion through alcohol, drugs and unrequited pain. She is touring again, I highly recommend you take the time to see this American icon before she stops performing.

She performed this last night here in N Georgia, then told us about the fact that many assume some songs to be based on life experience, which this is not (at least for her). A British fan asked her about this one, and when told that Lillian did not, in fact exist, he replied simply "Pity." I consider this to be the most moving song she has ever done.

This is a great emotional, evocative piece of writing and playing. Emmylou is incomparable...except...maybe to the tragically late Alexandra (Sandy) Denny's 50+ year old radio version of a song she wrote as a 19 y/o, "Who Knows Where the Time Goes". I'm pretty sure everyone reading this had heard the song done bv Judy Collins, with a great voice but little emotion--so listen to this and please file along with Emmylou's Red Dirt Girl, where it deserves to be. ELH's version is topical, Sandy's is general. Check it out: kzbin.info/www/bejne/fKundGdobZmGd5I
