Truthfully Tom was the only reason I even started even watching independent musicians, I’ve been HOG family for a while now. I re-found my love of music because of him and that led me to Ronnie and this amazing Spirits Family. I love you guy’s keep kickin a**.....Spirit fam for life.

I started writing a sci-fi series of books. When I got into the third book I dug around until I found an editor to look at my work. He was super exclusive and every artist that he worked with made it to the NYT bestseller list. He had industry connections. To get his attention was a big deal. He took me on. As we were getting toward the end of cleaning up the final draft he approached the topic of getting the book out. He started to dive into how to approach the industry and how to guard myself. He told me that he would bring the book to a few publishing houses that would give it an honest chance. I told him to hold up. My husband and I were starting our own publishing house and putting out the book independently. I firmly told him that NOBODY was going to control my work but ME. There was NO way that MY work was going under another person's control. Ever. There was a pregnant silence after I made that announcement. I felt like he was holding his breath. Then he burst out how happy he was to hear that. He told me that, as an independent I could sell a fraction of the books I could sell through the publisher and make more money. He talked about how they control everything after that contract is signed. How the artist gets screwed. How the work moves from a message to a commodity. I had his wholehearted support. These industries are ultra profitable for a reason. They keep the profit for themselves. Artists are getting smarter and, thanks to the internet, taking control of their own marketing and distributing. We don't need them. And that fact is scaring the crap out of them. The writing is on the wall. EVERYTHING is about to turn the corner and we're about to get some fresh, great art. Books, music, paintings, movies... Because the independent doesn't have to play it safe. We don't have a formula. Things have become so formulaic that art is now predictable and boring, but we're about to bust out of that box.

Thankfully it's not required now like it used to be. You can use free sources like youtube to get massive followings and go from there. Modern technology broke the chains of artists and we all have benefited greatly the the last decade because of it.

Thoughts on Epitaph? Some of my favorite bands are on that label. Widely known for bringing great artists. I’m not sure how they are with whom they sign but I’ve never really heard anything bad from them?

My personal feeling is, things are a lot different now than they were back when a lot of those bands were pioneering the way. That's not to say that labels didn't write Shady deals back then as well, but I am sure that that has escalated due to technology and simply the fact that so many people can do it all on their own. Labels used to control the music industry, but those days are quickly fading, so they resort to some pretty nasty tactics. Not sure if that answered your question. -Sean

I would personally consider Epitaph to be a good label and one that I personally would be very happy to work with. When The Ghost Inside had their bus accident Epitaph decided to give them 100% of the profits from their albums which is MASSIVE. They showed beyond doubt that they respect and care for their artists and to me that shows me a lot when they put their artists security above their own financial gains. Question.Rappers who get signed versus rock and metal is it all the same or are there differences just curious. I do know they all don't make any money its the label company who gets most of the money but still curious if it differs between the two genres of music.
