I think he slid the rook halfway through because if the other guy decides to trade he'd be pinned and lose a free pawn or his rook. He didn't want to trade but if the other guy did he needed his rook safe so he could capture back the pawn.

The Bd7 brilliant move at the end has to be one of the prettiest moves in chess history, even if not the most impressive.
