I first spoke to Emory in between rounds at the 2007 National Open. He was hypervigilant and wildly obsessed with his perception of Russian corruption. He seemed pretty extreme in that regard.

I have to get that. Emery was one of the most interesting personalities from my era of US chess. Other interesting personalities I would like to know more about include people like Roman and a master from New Orleans named Jude Acers. Probably the nicest man I met in US Chess was Arthur Bisguier. Posted for the algorithm

So glad you did this review! I heard about the book when it was released but neglected to buy it then. This reminded me, so I made it a last minute addition to my xmas list. Got it, and it's making for great xmas day reading.

Very interesting man. I would love to sit, have coffee/beer and converse with him. The stories he knows, the things I could learn.

I think Andrew Tate, his son, didn't even make 2000. I somehow thought he would be higher.

Really shows he can talk the talk but can’t walk the walk

@@RedOctober_ To be fair, he was a world champion kickboxer and I think also very successful at other fighting disciplines. He seems to have only ever been an amateur chess player and I'm pretty sure he has a realistic sense of his playing strength at just being a decent amateur, he never "talked the talk" as though he's some great player. Plenty of real things to criticise him for if you want to virtue signal.

Emory Tate spoke Russian. No one knows what was going on! Conspiracy theories!

Tate was an enlisted guy in the Air Force, so he probably learned Russian at the Defense Language Institute in Monterey, CA. If he was fluent, he either had an extreme aptitude for languages, or he spent lots of time in or around Russian speakers. I went to the DLI for Arabic and I knew no one who was fluent in their language. Including college graduates with degrees in other languages.

Yep, but the title doesn't describe his strength or style of play. He's a special player on and off the board.

He got the IM title, at age 50, which is pretty unusual. I think there was a NYT chess column about it, at the time.
