'To the health of the written word'. Although not his exact words, only Hitch could have framed it as perfectly as he did; to honour a man of immense character, dignity and bravery. We give thanks for both their lives. Hitch is dead! Long live Christopher Hitchens. Our efforts to resist the captivity of our minds must pass through theirs.

I live right outside Atlanta and I had no idea about Rushdie's involvement with Emory until today. He's such a brilliant man.

@@47imagine The lady has to lower the microphone, because of her height. The joke is that "being short" with her speech, she already is in height.

I loved watching this and seeing the parallel to an interivew he gave shortly before his death, in which he said he did not fear dying so much as he feared not being able to write anymore, that his cancer would prevent him from writing. A writer was who he WAS, not what he did. Long live the written word indeed.

I reflect on this beautiful celebration of Salman, and Hitchen’s commemorating speech often. His ominous prediction and promise that his audience will toast to the “health of the written word,” again. It’s astounding how he makes such an alarming statement with so much poise and confidence, as if he knows that liberal democracy will forever be under threat, and yet he’s sure the human spirit will nevertheless rise to the occasion again and again. Thank you, Hitch.
