As a music teacher, It's actually quite charming to watch someone with no conventional understanding of music theory approach composition with their own methodology; and I'm glad that tools like FL piano roll exist to facilitate precisely this. There's too much snobbery in the comments. If you want to facepalm, that's fine - but keep it to yourself.

I realized that as well, since I started from nothing and learned by doing a lot of research and all, I'm delighted to see people like him with PASSION giving others tools to create and build emotion. That's what music is about.

@kungfucolin agreed completely. we put our hands on our instruments, and then we learned to make sound, and then, we learned how to make them sound good. These are things an instructor can never teach -- that is how one develops ones own sound and learns to make their instrument speak from their heart when lecture and practice hall time is done and the concert hall lights and curtains have been raised. Even then with formal training, there comes a point where we are taking the notes from the page, and making them speak from us. Theory can never teach this. One who learns to do it from the start is far more gifted then those with years of school and nothing to show for it. Theory is only a guide. Bookworms are useless with no work experience. Adaptability and development of methodology are personal skills one of THOSE theorists will never learn without putting their hands on their fret , fingerboards, strings, pads, bows, sticks, or keys. To them I say, pretending to play will get you no where. What is being done here is art, and being shared with us as he walks that path of learning, and its beautiful.

it reminds me of those people who say they hate maths but do those social media maths puzzles. it's all in the approach, and I can see how someone could take this tutorial and start making music. The only critique I have is not knowing the key of the vocal sample, but I feel like that's very minor for what most people would take away from this.

The “comfortable note” he is referring to is the dominant note or simply the 5th in a key.
@djhiffwe1413
@djhiffwe1413 3 жыл бұрын
The root and the 5th should almost always sound "good." There's also the "supertonic," which is the 2nd scale degree. That also tends to go with anything, so I'd recommend at least trying it.

I found a sudden interest in music production the other day. I’m someone who know little to nothing about music and chords, melodies, etc. so seeing this, inspires me more. Just seeing in the beginning how he makes the chord progression, already taught me a lot I need to know. I write songs with my cousin sometimes, so this inspires me to keep learning and potentially make beets for her one day.

This is amazing. I'm a producer who started out with conventional/classical training in music theory, and ever since I stepped into the field of production, I realized how interesting and important it could be to free myself from the traditional understanding from time to time and create chord patterns in the way you demonstrated. Cool video, thanks so much!
@darkkitchenrecords2625

Part of the untold magic is when making chords outta a scale, you have to use the same chord quality (Maj/min/dim/augm) as in the scale. In the chosen scale, A is minor, G and F are major. You may do the opposite : lay down a couple of chords and then look for matching scales you can use, either using a plugin or a website

There's a reason why they say theory differs from practical. People can pass theory easily but fail the practical from theory. Sometimes you just need to be shown how it's done and I've learned a lot from this.

Good stuff my man. I play many instruments, I'm untrained and do not know the text book on music theory, I just know what my ears have told me for 36 years. I create music on my truck steering wheel, with my guitar, in random buckets laying in my shop while im working on a woodworking project, on fruity loops, in my head, on my midi keyboard, beat boxing with my son. My Dad use to tell me he only likes music played on real instruments. I just want to make music. If I like the way it sounds its music to me. The structure, key, all the technical stuff is important in a way but there is a difference in "Playing Music" and "Creating Music" I got bored of playing cover songs when I was 14 years old. Your ears should be your ultimate guidance. Music is music use whatever tool you have and do not conform to any logic or system. Good music typically is generated through random chaos and the moment must be captured or it could be lost forever.

The process of creating chords and defining the emotion and atmosphere is one of the hardest things to learn that only come from watching others and experience. You sir are definitely a pioneer in simplifying these concepts and showing how simplicity and little details can go as far as to inspire the entirety of the track. 3 year old video and it's one of the most important and most relevant concepts

hey man just wanted to let you know, im just a small kid from Kansas with a strong love for music production and audio engineering aspect of music. I was scared to start using FL studios because I have a hard time putting what I hear in my head into FL Studios. This video gave me a little motivation to try it out. I got accepted into a audio engineering school but cant afford anything so because of this video I have hope and will always appreciate it.

Ok I have never seen any of your videos and I am not a super theory heavy musician. But I love music and I love the idea of making music but I have no idea how when I have ever tried to sit and do it. This is like opening up a whole new practical world to me! I have a midi controller coming in the mail and I can’t wait to use these basic steps to just make stuff even tho I have no idea what is actually happening, you can just feel it! So good. Subscribed!

As a person who was taught by a music major, highly technical blues guy that said shit like 'gimmie the flatty third' when he wanted a minor, hearing someone breakdown mastering translating emotions into chords in this way is awesome. I'd love to chat with you one on one sometime on getting this same sort of breakdown on some songs I've been trying to understand. Willing to pay for consulting. HMU.

If masterclasses don't teach chord inversions and sustained notes in progression they're not master classes. This is theory 101 stuff.

I just hope people are not paying money. Because that is highways robbery. How you gonna teach music without an instrument. It’s all about using software. M. To that end, I STILL don’t know what this “Music Theory” is (and I have been making music since 1974. I know what music is, but unsure of this theory. Is it just a fancy way of saying using a software, or….? I’m sure the guy is a nice guy and all but he needs to stop all this “secrets of Bass real EDM artists don’t want you to know” and “Never start an EastSide Underground DubHop beat without this plugin” blah blah. It’s ART. Since when is there a right way and a wrong way? It’s what people like. I dunno. I wish there was more progressiveness and less theorizing.

@@YourFreeBeats you've been making music for 50 years and never heard of "Music theory"? Theory has nothing to do with using software, using software is more just an issue of "taste", or easiness. I'm not really talented at real instruments, I'm trying to get better, but it takes real practice and talent, while in software you can just tell the computer to play the notes. but no, Theory is about what notes sound nice, in whatever medium it may be, digital, electric or acosutic. it's about key signatures, and chord progressions, and rhythm oh, and also, you're over 50 and and your username is "Check-a-Bitch Beats"? dope

@@YourFreeBeats There is a difference between the clickbait you're complaining about and music theory. You trying to talk about music theory is actually laughably stupid. You're one of those idiots that think it's a bunch of "rules" and talk down on it because "I don't wanna limit My Creativity™." Even though it's obvious you've NEVER studied it. In reality, music theory functions more like guidelines. It's music **theory,** not "music law" for a reason. Plus, are you seriously talking about breaking music theory conventions when making EDM??? That's just stupid. VAST majority of EDM rarely explores outside of major/minor and I DOUBT your music has either even though you have big talk. So many kids out there talking about how they "don't need music theory," meanwhile all they write is vi - IV - I - V or a rotation of it. If this is you, stfu and learn noob theory.
