Yavuz Sultan Selim became the Sultan of the Ottoman Empire in 1512 with the support of the janissaries. His elder brother Şehzade Korkut recognized the sultanate of his brother Sultan Selim and was appointed to the Saruhan Sanjakbeylik. Sultan Selim asked some government officials to find out his true opinion on whether or not Şehzade Korkut recognized himself as a sultan. He wrote letters in a way that he wished his men to become sultans. By giving positive answers to the letters, Şehzade Korkut showed his real intention. Sultan Selim had to have his elder brother, Prince Korkut, killed, albeit unwillingly, for the survival of the state. He went under and said in tears:
"O my brother! What if you had done so, nor if I had to do so!"
