Ren has another gift that often goes unnoticed. It's who he chooses to collaborate with and the chemistry he creates with them all. His cinematographer Sam, his bandmates, his duos, his team (all friends first). He recognizes their talent, then sprinkles fairy dust on them. Wild!

I waited quite a while after Hi Ren to do the Tales ,and after watching the videos for songs like Chalk Outlines, How To Be Me, The Big Push , I was so taken aback by the level of aggression on REN’s voice. And then I was reduced to a heap of tears by the end of Violet’s Tale. Yes, This is a masterpiece and a masterclass in storytelling . He uses absolutely everything he has to tell these Tales- and that includes the camera work done by Samuel Perry Falvey. Beyond his use of the literary tools of metaphor, simile, alliteration, personification there are his use of tone, tempo and cadence, his guitar as a percussive instrument, the overtures of each Tale are specific to the character and in ways foreshadow what is coming ( Jenny’s is of a girl, tired and cold, walking home/ Screech’s is phrenetic and Violet’s is haunting and foreboding). In Jenny’s Tale the siren sounds approaching are a signal of crime of the street and along comes Screech ..with the blade with the teeth…and frozen, Jenny turns to butter and dies in the street. In Screech’s Tale the sirens sound are like a banshee in the night , The shrill cry of justice cutting like the sharpest knife- and so while Jenny died at the hands of Screech’s blade Screech also dies by the knife “Justice “ ( Richard) . And for a brief moment we see Screech as a scared kid of 14 , spinning around what he just did. Violet’s Tale is just a knife in the heart of the audience/ listener. And when Ren is in the stairwell looking up while singing “ she never had a chance “ you can feel that chance floating up and out into the darkness of the night sky ( back to Screech who melted into the black night). Oh man, there’s SO much here. I’m talking Thesis writing stuff!

I love so much everything you just wrote, and you provided so many insights I'd never noticed and haven't seen discussed anywhere. I really resonate with the things you said about Screech's tale and the brief portrayal where you can feel him as a frightened kid, because one of the moments of this trilogy that tears at my heart and that very few people really discuss is the line when REN sings "Wheeeeere did he go?" I'm mom to a 16 year old son, and when I hear the way REN sings the word "Where", all I can hear is the wail of an infant. It's a very specific kind of wail or cry, and it's very primal, and to me it conveys a such a powerful feeling of infancy and helplessness and distress, which is sort of amplified or confined by the following lines where he's pleading for help from his friend and sounds so lost and so young. Listening to it again after hearing Violet's Tale, it's hard not to feel for him as a child who has never had a mother (or father) to respond to his cries or comfort or help him when he needed it. It makes it clear to me at least that Screech can't be reduced merely to "the villain" of this tale. He's also a victim.

I agree - there is so much here, even the smallest moments. My favourite is towards the end of Violet’s Tale when Ren appears to stumble when describing Violet’s plea to save her baby (babies 😉)and then regains his balance on the phrase “the doctor soon regained composure” - switching character perspective in a stride. I mean, who else plans things in this granular detail? Talk about next level!

The magic of Ren is that he creates an entire universe out of whatever is available. Hand that man a single discarded shoe and it would be turned into a musical vehicle for his creativity.

"Do you think I want to do this, Violet" As a survivor of domestic violence, it gives me chills and nausea every time I hear it. Yes, that's exactly how an abuser thinks. I've watched reactors do Jenny and Screech 100's of times and keep hoping that an abuser will recognize their own behavior and see how sickening it is to most of the world. Just maybe a life could be saved. Great reaction, guys.

@@lesliejenifer920 Yes, that was years ago. I'm now 61 and run a 911 center. It is amazing the stories I hear over the phone. I swear there must be a how to abuse people for dummies instruction book out there because it's all the same tactics but different levels of intensity. I'm thankful Ren did the Tales to shine light on domestic abuse and generational violence.

There was at least one untold story within each Tale: Jenny's Tale - Jenny was a 14-year-old prostitute Screech's Tale - Patrick was not home for the very same reason why Screech's girlfriend was "busy" Viiolet's Tale - Stevie is NOT the father!

This is one of the best reactions to the Tales I've experienced. Thank you! Love you guys! I want to bring your attention to two things most reactors miss, according to my interpretations. In "Jenny's Tale" you saw her as a 14 year old girl (not knowing her age until the end of "Violet's Tale") walking home from a night on the town in a dangerous area. My interpretation, given her history and lyrics, "walked 1,000 times before (in high heeled shoes) and "wanting to escape" is that she's a child prostitute. Also, almost everyone doesn't fully watch the final few seconds of "Screech's Tale". You commented on loving Ren and Sam's fade outs, but if you pay really close attention, you'll notice that once Ren, as the narrator, walks away, we're literally witnessing Screech's life fade to black as he dies and the "lights go dim". I agree. A masterclass. Ren deserves every award on the planet, in my opinion. 🙋‍♀️💖

After like my 4th time watching the tales I did notice the slow fade while lying down. Then Ren saying the lights go dim. Most people are in shock the first time and it is easy to miss all the little things. Ren makes the stories so you keep picking up more gems as you repeatedly watch them.

Fun fact, ren said on a stream before the album came out that there was kind of a 4th tale coming but was unrelated. That 4th tale must have been Money Game 3. I think it’s so interesting how the feel of the story telling changes when the genre changes from barcode to rap. Rap is an excellent medium for storytelling, but I prefer this.

Sam=Sam Perry Falvey. Long term collaborator and master of the one shot! His first video with Ren was Children of The Moon and they've been together ever since. Sam is on the slab in Children, and drives the car in Power. Get to know more about both of them in the BTS film by Wolf Johnson! I also want to suggest the 'Million Subscriber' video in which Ren talks about 'Defining Success'! I also want to shout out that Ren raises the pain of abuse without specifically saying anything that YT could ban!

One of my favorite lines is when Screech is knocking on Patrick's door. His immaturity shows so much in his whiney "Come on man I can't knock no more." He's complaining about how long he's been there & his sore knuckles. It's all about him and his needs and pain. That's a 14yo's mindset.

It amuses me that we adults are all in awe of Sam's and Ren's "creative" use of guitar and camera in the part when Screech is shot. How quickly we forget. Not sure about anyone else, but my childhood was spent using whatever was at hand to become whatever my imagination conjured up. Really, Ren and Sam were just being big kids here and using what they had on hand to tell the best story they could. It is an indictment on all us adults that we should see it as anything out of the ordinary.....yet we do; and it is.

I think reactions to something like the guitar use in “Screech” isn’t really surprising considering that in this day and age everything HAS to be (and usually is) over produced. So it is refreshing to see this kind of raw creativity; two guys with a camera, a guitar, a mic and a couple locations making the most of absolutely everything around them.

New sub, have been binging your reactions to Ren and Chinchilla all morning and have to say these have been THE best breakdowns I have seen of the music the lyrics and the visuals. It may not be the best channel to listen to the flow of the music (and you probably get flack for that) but for the most part we are attracted by songs we already know and can always go and pull up the songs themselves if we want an un interrupted listen. You are adding so much through your commentary so great job guys. Obviously you have a major focus on K/J pop which is not my particular bag but I will always be keeping an eye on your output in case you stray back to more J metal with the likes of ‘Lovebites’ who move one more step than Bandmaid or pick up on that other solid lane of reaction gold that is Symphonic metal with bands like Epica, Nightwish or Within Temptation. Thanks for a really enjoyable morning!

"and dark." Dark is the central character in the trilogy. All three are set in the dark streets. Jenny's Tail is a lot darker than most people are willing to accept. Forgetting how dark, the central character, tells you something.

Well in the UK regular Street-Police Officers (the so-called "Bobby") don´t carry guns, so Screech didn´t expect to engage with a gun carring Police Officer. But in that case there was a murder "just one street apart" (Jenny) = different Police Squad on the scene. And I will also mention that for instance I was with 14 already full grown in size and I´m a bit over 6 feet tall. So Screech doesn´t had to have neccesarily the size appearance of "a kid"... and that happened at night so the view for the officer was not a "clear view" either in order to recognize that it was a kid storming with a knife in his hands towards him.

Yeah but the colours are definitely rustic/medieval (in the bard style) in the burgundy/brown colour in Jenny’s tale. Screech’s tale white (star) on dark blue which stands out (edit here) in the very much darker ending. I also wondered if the star on his back linked to Richard - a cop and also the dark star when Ren, as narrator, stares up to the night. Violet’s tale is the hospital gown so more obvious. Btw he said he keeps all the jackets from his vids cos he can’t bear to let them go thus stating how important they are to his characters.
