Hi, In 2018, Oprah Winfrey overheard the performance (DMC Festival 2015), "I Have Nothing" of Sohyang on KZbin and was so surprised and moved that she told David Foster her story. David Foster made tremendous efforts to meet her after hearing this song of Sohyang and she performed with him in Japan that year in November at his earnest invitation. David Foster, who performed with Sohyang, said the performance with her was the best and was really happy to meet the Incredible and Fantastic Top singer in the world and perform together. This song is emotional for me and I have not studied the Korean culture... I loved being able to watch you truly appreciate it. At the heart of it, in my limited understanding is that it is the longing for North and South Korea to be reunited as one. Many families were torn apart when that border was drawn. I'd also heard that the songwriter had 3 siblings in North Korea. The parents of the songwriter had told him/her? ....when you see your siblings again, please let them know that we didn't abandon them. 😢 Stunning arrangement, stunning vocals and a back story that touches your heart. Doesn't get any better.

I love your prior knowledge on the name and meaning(s) of the song. It really affects you more when you can understand the weight and baggage that the lyrics and emotions project. SoHyang’s singing and ability to give passion into her voice, face and body really hits people even if they do not know the meaning. I’ve seen people get to tears just on her singing ability alone (vocal coaches and singers mostly). So seeing you come to tears really showed your understanding and I’m thankful for the reaction :))

Unbelievably Sohyang was voted off the show fairly early. The eventual winner was Song Sohee. Sohee puts fun fear into the other performers at these traditional events since she is a Gugak specialist. Sohyang and the others love and respect Sohee. This simple korean folk song (though she changed it into such a complex piece) is about sorrow but also about hope and acceptance. When you accept the life as is, then you are at peace with yourself but still that feeling of longing and hope remains... and life goes on. Sohyang singing touched all these emotions as you can see/hear it.

As I've seen in a lot of fancams she rarely sings with in-ears but it's still live. There's also a fancam on this performance so you can see. She basically never lypsincs except for that one Olympic performance, but that was soo obvious lol, apart from that she always sings live.

When he announces a concert, it is sold out in less than 15 minutes ( 75,000 ). He SOARS into celestial realms and will grab your heart to the core. King Dimash and Queen Sohyang... as they say on YT ! These singers deserve it. Yes, this performance was part of a contest, so live. Of course, as you understand, this version was not traditional. In another contest, the very young Song Sohee won over Sohyang because her Arirang was really traditional... and Sohyang's no. But the Sohyang's version is also the one that most Koreans prefer... because it is quite exceptional. I'm glad you like Korean traditional music. Also, may I recommend, if you do'nt know her yet, Song Sohee in "Wet Tears in the Tumen River". Whenever I listen to this song, it's a shock. The Tumen River separates South and North Korea. And this song mixes the painful border of the two Koreas with the separation of two lovers. It's unique ! @@JennThePandaa I learned about the Korean culture from my Sensei in TaeKwonDo. When I heard So Hyang, I immediately remembered him singing, when he didn't think anyone was listening. I used to sit right outside the office before TaeKwonDo practice was starting, just to hear him be fully Korean. I live in America, and he showed his "American" side a bit more, when he knew people were paying attention to him. I just realized this happened 25-30 years ago, but music plays a gigantic part into the culture of a nation. I am also a history geek Jenn :)

about the ear piece. Yes shes singing live. I'm korean and I can see that she actually misses a section of lyrics which she hums off naturally like nothing ever happened lol but yea, theres plenty of other evidences in the video that shows shes singing live but this is the most prominent one ;D. Shes just too talented that she doesnt need an ear piece to sing in tune.

Take the "I" out of the pronunciation. Say it like So HYUNG. Not HI, but just YUNG with an H in front of it. HYUNG.... Hope this helps.
