Such black metal perfection! I agree wholeheartedly with you Rauta. This is not just Emperor's best but also a musical work of art. This album, apart from its dark, beautiful magnificence, also holds many fond memories for me around a certain time when I had just listened to it for my first time and had this repeatedly in my cd player. Awesome review my friend.

A true classic. To be honest I had the Emperor / Wrath of the Tyrant Compilation first and this album about a year late. So for me this is more the one connecting with Emperor. I remember putting it on a tape for my walkman on the school way beeing a complete outsider. Music keeps strong especially this one. Hearing this songs in nowadays it sets free the same feelings like those old days. Almost none of the new bands can reach this because of this darker times.

Got a tattoo partially symbolizing this masterpiece. Absolutely takes me away somewhere else whenever I listen to this. Favorite songs are Towards the Pantheon and Beyond the Great Vast Forest.

Inno A Satana was actually the first black metal song I ever heard and ever since that day been a warrior for the devil.

I think this is my number one album. It used to be rage against machines debut but this emperor album is a whole new level of intense perfection.

Minor jump back to this video: The recent LP reissues on Candlelight are absolutely fantastic! Last year's pressings of Nightside and Anthems have now hit stupid prices so the new reissues are a great thing.

Black metal perfection! My favourite bm album, maybe even my favourite album of all time. Suggestion for another classic review; Gorgoroth - Under the sign of hell. That's my number two pick.
@RautaMetal6 жыл бұрын
Willem Lenders cheers! I might do that one too at some point.

That was the only Gorgoroth album that I liked but I agree that one is ferocious and sinister. I love Hat's vocal style on that one.
@willemlenders82726 жыл бұрын
It's their best by a mile, but I like most of the other albums as well. The vocals are done by Pest, not Hat, and he sounds insane. Their 2009 Quantos album has him on vocals as well and has similar riffing. Pretty good album if you can get past the polished production.

Ahhh I am totally mixed up with Pentagram, my bad lol. I meant to say that Pentagram is the only one I like, with the insane vocals by Hat lol. Brain farted.

One of the best black metal albums since the day 1.

While I do love the album I prefer the demo, but that is mostly down to the fact it introduced me to "necro" sounding stuff. Emperor: the further you go back in time, the more I like their stuff.

This album, and Aspera hiems Symfonia for me are the milestones of symphonic black metal (SBM), even though there are many good ones (Stormblast for example). By the way, I don't know why, but nowadays I don't find anything intresting in symphonic black metal. What do you think??, is SBM some sort of "common place"??, the new bands try to sound like their "heroes"??, or maybe this genre was intermingled with Atmospheric BM?? As always, keep it up, take care, and Saludos!!
@RautaMetal6 жыл бұрын
Yeah, I understand what you mean (even though I don't like Aspera nor Stormblast really). Nowadays symphonic black metal is more or less melted into atmospheric black metal. It's sometimes really hard to draw the line between these two. And usually SBM fails because it just tries to copy the "heroes" or pioneers, like you said. I just got a couple of those albums for review.

Rauta Absolutely, totally agree. For example, a couple of days ago, I was checking some new releases, when I came across with the new album from Dragonlord (a side project from the legendary guitar player of Testament, Peterson), and even though I'm not a huge fan, I remember that the album "Dark wings" (or something like that), was good at the time, so I decided to give it an opportunity, and man!!, It's awful!!, is a complete joke!, I mean, I can understand which is the aproaching and the goal of this type of albums, but it is so cheesy, to say the least, that Dimmu Borgir seems like Prokofiev in comparison!!

Stringer Bell Yeh, I reviewed it for Imperiumi.net a few weeks ago and will review it for Rauta if/when I get the physical copy. To me it's quite okay. Not great, but not bad either.

I always think it's hard to review an album like this. Whilst it is a masterpiece, I have to put my 1990's head on to review albums of this era. I can't help but think if it was released this day and age, how relevant would it be ? Would it still have the same impact. ? Raute, you should do a video on what your favourite era of metal is.
@RautaMetal6 жыл бұрын
You're right. It's really hard to "touch" the classics with the modern ideas and yet at the same time trying to understand and remember why it was such a monument of its time. I can do such a video, but it won't be a simple topic!

I didn't discover Emperor (and black metal in general) until the mid 2000s. This album instantly made me a fan of the genre, because good songwriting is timeless. I can't think of any symphonic bm that even comes close, except Anthems of course.
@Gregbaltzer6 жыл бұрын
Love this album except for the vocals. I find they're too buried in the mix, I feel the Emperor EP the vocals are slightly higher. That and I feel that Ihsahn was still too much of a Quorthon clone. I felt he came more into his own style on Anthems
