Prior to this scene while they were riding under the car, Shack dangled a large, heavy pin on a rope, which bounced around violently under A. After all the mentoring that A did, Cigarette watched and did nothing to help when he could have, being an opportunist. It’s analogous to many situations I’ve experienced.

This movie gets a solid B rating but gets bonus points because Lee Marvin and Ernest Borgnine are in it- the casting Director gets an A-plus! There are a few familiar names in the cast that pop up later on TV. The battle here is my favorite part simply because Shack gets his comeuppance. The backwards fall off the caboose and the shove into the ditch are a couple of the most painful things I’ve ever seen even if they divided the stunts up. Notice the kid did a belly-flop when he hit the water; that had to have hurt too.

Actually no, as said by Grahamqckr, it was filmed on the OP&E (now abandoned) of Cottage Grove. The 19 was leased to the railroad from 1970-1988 as both railroads were owned by the same company.

A Number 1 is telling Cigarette that he IS a bum, that he isn't cut out to be a hobo. He's telling the kid to take up begging instead. "get a tin can and take up mooching. Knock on backdoors for a nickel. Tell 'em your story and make them weep." Keith Carradine is sitting out the final fight instead of helping out, then acted like they were partners. "You COULD have been a meat eater" "You had the juice but not the heart and they go together" "you had the juice but not the feel". It's a Reason Why You Suck speech.

The Blackadder; In those days, a movie like this would've had a stuntman take that fall, but it would've been rehearsed for a few days to get the timing AND safety down to an absolute T. Mr. Borgnine, who played Shack the train conductor, said in a behind the scenes interview that that fight between him and A#1 was choreographed to perfection, and was filmed a bit at a time over 36 days.
